I'm still convinced that Wall Jump Boots are unskippable in non-EPBC low%. If the damage boost that I think was intended for this skip is possible, I haven't been able to pull it off even with tool assistance. Until someone does a demonstration and proves it can be done, I'm ruling the Wall Jump Boots a mandatory pickup in non-EPBC low% (12.1% in EPBC challenge, according to Elm).

Morph Ball
Bombs
Wall Jump Boots
3 Missile Tanks (one 5-pack, one 10-pack, one unskippable 2-pack)
2 Super Tanks (two 2-packs)
3 Power Bomb Tanks (fake early pack and two unskippable packs)
4 E-Tanks
Charge Beam
Ice Beam
Space Jump
Speed Booster
Varia Suit
Gravity Suit

Final count: 14.8%

My new personal best for this hack!

This was done on ZSNES 8MB FuSoYa 1.51 with only 1 save state allocated. It can definitely be improved on, since I needed to backtrack twice due to going the wrong way in lower Norfair.
Those PB blocks that lead to Ridley are too well hidden. I keep forgetting they're there.
I've gotten early bombs, so I can say with confidence that it is possible. I have to slow down the emulator to 1/8 speed to properly time the boost, but it is definitely doable.

Even when I'm able to boost though, I collide with the wall and it completely guts my upward momentum.

Quietus

I had a stab at doing it to see if I could help you out. I managed that damage boost, and the one after it, but the third stumped me. It seemed that even when I got the perfect upward boost, I always fell one tile short of making it.

I honestly don't even know why this was implemented to begin with. I have an older version of Axeil and you just take the lower path to get to the Bombs without WJB. There are no bomb blocks to impede you in that morph tunnel in older versions.

Drewseph

Fox, I implemented it because I felt scripting bomb blocks out of the way felt... well, scripted. boosting was a valid mechanic, and so I put that it.  gotta crouch jump on the last two to get the height.

M1CR0H4CK3R

I've outdone myself, again! I optimized item collection a bit more, performed a tad more aggressively against bosses and the metroids in Tourian, and shaved off a whole minute and a half in the escape (and still saved the animals) by utilizing running and jumping in water optimally during the last segment of the escape, and this is the result:

Mine was with crouching.

I'd be interested in seeing the run, if you've got a recording somewhere. I always like 100% runs.

Sadly, I never record my gameplay, but if I did, it would be in .zmv format, since I use ZSNES 8MB FuSoYa. I always utilize save states, so it would be very boring to watch me constantly reload after almost every action, anyway.

Quietus

If you're recording a .zmv (I use ZSNES too), it wouldn't show the reloads, and would just be one fluid run. That's how a TAS is made. :^_^:

Drewseph

Quietus, can you show me a video of you attempting the third damage boost?

Quietus

Hehe, I could, but there's no need. I began recording, failed the boost, rewound a smidge, then made it up on the next jump.

I can confirm it is definitely possible, though it is tough. Cheers, Drewseph, for the motivation to try again for ten seconds.

Edit: And I went back down to check it wasn't a fluke, and managed it about 3/4 times. Weird

Maybe you were just tired the first time you tried it. Either way, congrats!

Hi there. I'm playing on and off for a few weeks (10 ingame hours now) and finally posting, because I'm really stuck not finding a way to the grappling beam which seems to be the next logical step to get but I don't find a way to get to it (even looked up a map online) :\
I already went to lower right of Norfair, even bejond the point of no return (after the Save Station, see Picture 3) only to find my way blocked by a gray door. What am I missing? Could someone please write up a non spoilery "normal" item progression? ^^"
In the room next to the elevator, you need to kill all enemies to open the door.
fedprod

Thanks, feeling a bit stupid now, must have overlooked a smaller enemy and thought the big one (which killed me at least half a dozen times) would've unlocked it alone ^^"

I just got the Varia Suit and now I cannot jump correctly -- I jump as if under water.

What emulator are you using? I don't think Drewseph tested that many emulators, so some might have bugs. I recommend ZSNES FuSoYa 8MB personally.

There is a corridor which leads to Norfair's North East elevator terminal. However, it is blocked by indestructible blocks. How do I get past it?

Also there is a glass tank bridge which there is a Chozo Guardian in one door and a missile on the other side, how do I get access to it?

Quietus

Most things like that have changes that occur after certain other events take place later on in the hack, such as beating a certain boss or collecting an item. Your best bet is simply to return later on.

That is a barricade tied to the Early Powerbomb challenge.  The barricade shares the same ID as the bombs powerup, and is removed once you acquire bombs. I'm guessing you didn't get bombs the proper way?

Beat a certain boss.

i beat this hack from 1.2 to final version at least 5 times. last 2 runs at 100.0% this is my favorite hack ever. things improved so much, specially tourian, pre 1.4 was a hell of hell. in the final version is pretty much doable without savestates.

only thing annoys me a bit:
- maridia ibj section: oh crap this was pretty hard pre 1.5, becomes more doable 1.6+ but still hard.
- sandpits are more "vanilla" now, but still somewhat annoying.
- grapple section after you get grapple beam. you miss a grapple spot you fall a suitless lava pit.
- plasma beam after golden torizo, why... you pretty much need plasma to play in lower norfair section, this section is pretty much run from enemies, super missiles aren't that powerful and the beam is crappy without plasma in this section. maybe plasma becoming available before golden torizo can make this section more comfortable and still hard because:
- charged plasma beam is very weak, almost same damage than normal shots, beams are a bit weak in this hack tho, plasma is okay, but charge beam with plasma...
- screw attack puzzle is randomized, sometimes are impossible random button order you need to hard reset the game. and screw attack so hard to use and useless in tourian.
overall the hack is prety refined, maybe the best of all hacks in the super metroid category.
