Alrighty kiddies, its time to start nominations for this years Room of the Year competition!

Head on over to THIS page to see which rooms you would like to nominate, and submit your nomination below!
You may submit up to THREE nominations.

At the beginning of the 3rd week of December the nominations will end and the top 8 nominees will be entered for the RotY finals!

---

And on another note, we will be using this topic to also converse on next years format.
Some people want a Room of the Month, and others prefer the Room of the Week format.
Leave your comments here, and use the voting option at the top of the page!

Which ever on is higher is the format we will be using next year, and I will have it set up that you can change your vote if you want to.

Some people may feel that the current format is perfectly fine, but allow me to explain both the advantages and disadvantages of running this monthly or biweekly instead.

First let me list the good things:
1. More people would most likely enter some thing for it. As it has been now many weeks have only had two entries, and many of the entries that have been made overall could have been somewhat more personal/better. If it's spaced out more then I believe people would be more willing to enter rather then just thinking "eh, I can do it next week" plus we would "maybe" see higher quality, but overall we will have a better contest as there would possibly be more entries.

2. People would most likely have a higher chance of getting more/better feedback due to the longer time span. It's a known fact that people like to leave a small review of every entry when they have the time... which is not too often for most people. This will allow them to have more time in doing so.

Now, of course there are downsides too.
1. The most obvious one is that it won't be as many winners or as much voting. I might as well have listed this is a good thing as it would be for me, but I know it's a bit more controversial then that, on how people think.

2. Due to the longer time there may be some "dead time" where nothing is really posted in the topic. This applies even if we run monthly or biweekly. This is highly a guess from me that it may happen, I don't know, users may keep the topic alive the whole time, after all.

That's really all I could think of right now, but I'm sure you all can find more good and bad things about switching up.

I'm also going to state that we have a whole lot more running options then weekly and monthly.

For example:
biweekly: Quite simple, you set a number of X weeks for the contest to be, could be any number, but in general every other week as seen on the name.
Entry based: Have a limit of X entries before the contest run. Run it with a minimum of weekly but don't start up a new one unless there are enough entries. <-(Would be very good system to use to prevent boring contests with very few entries.)
Monthly: Obviously running the contest over the span of a month rather then a week.
Weekly: What we have had now.
WSINL: When Squishy Is Not Lazy, kinda partly what we have had now, topic is updated when squishy remembers it and is not lazy! :awesome:
Yes that last one was a joke.

So really, what to the people want? :p
I know I would prefer montly, entry based or biweekly over what we have now.

Parabox

So I went over all the rooms.
W1: Kennon has a nice, big, solid, MZ/MF-ish entry there.

W2: Webber always has these busy, layered rooms. Sometimes they come out great for me, sometimes not as much. This is a good one, although the palette should be touched up imo.

W3: Back when Bloods submitted. Vibrant, colorful and quite true to the original style. Simplistic and compact.

W4: Dman has only two wins, and they're both very much his style. I just don't know what to look at, it's so damn busy.

W5: Grime I'm kinda used to. A good balance between detailed and simplistic, artistic and realistic. Displayed all together like this, they seem kinda mediocre. Maybe he should touch up his style?

W6: This room should have had more blending edge tiles. The transition from metal to sand to rock is just too quick for me.

W7: NESsy goodness and an abstract palette. Snarfblam delivers.

W8: One of SadFish's bestest rooms. Cold, dark, gritty, metalish, and very well layered and tailored.

W9: Eh, bit too simplistic. Mixes a few styles just the wrong way, IMO.

W10: Layered, layered, layered. And cartoony. And chocolate. The metal palette or the rock palette should be slightly adjusted to make it blend better, and to make the layer transition work better.

W11: Silver Skree stays true to the original style nicely. I'm not much a fan of non-transition doors. Also, the smooth tiles in the bottom are incoherent, and that big limestone spectacle is somewhat of an eyesore, but could be touched up.

W12: Very tranquil, layered correctly, also kudos on the placement of those background bursts.

W13: Black Falcon. Hot DAMN. You just blend all the best the Prime games have brought in SM. It's likely that one of his is going to get my vote.

W14: This image or video has been deleted - Photobucket.

W15: The glass and the meat tiles are not blending in too well. Also, mushroom PINGAS.

W16: Another Black Falcon, shame it's scaled. I really can't wait for his hack.

W17: WEBBER used LAYER! But it didn't go over too well...

W18: DSO and MetroidMst usually barf these colors. That's where they get their palettes from. Sorry guys, just not my style. Nice rework of MB's room.

W19: Grime.

W20: Man, I can't figure out what's up and what's down in this room.

W21: Skree went overboard with vibrant palettes here. Looks good, shame of the save enemy.

W22: Mindfuck colors.

W23: " ".

W24: Grime.

W25: Grime.

W26: Nice room again, snarf. Your water clashes with the regular tiles though.

W27: Background rape.

W28: Nice room. You go through it way too fast though.

W29: Would fit straight into real Ceres. Nice job.

W30: One of Webber's better rooms. The grass should be toned down, though.

W31: Splendid room. Void of enemies, though.

W32: Nice room. Pipes are a bit chocolate and that foreground rock should be more detailed.

W33: Only one term comes to mind. Chocolate Crateria. Chocolateria?

W34: I would call Rule 34 on this one, if it wasn't porn already. It's a pilefuck though. I still think it's way too busy.

W35: Nice cold room. Pipe is a nice touch.

W36: Snow is dark enough to be ash. Good room besides that. Maybe a Chozo temple in the BG?

W37: BlackSnow has another nice Chocolateria room. Dirt != Chocolate, people.

W38: Darkness is covering me, all that I see, absolute horror, I cannot live, I cannot die, trapped in myself, body my holding cell.

W39: Chocolateria.

W40: Pukey palette. That week wasn't the greatest.

W41: Gore much?

W42: -

W43: Nice, barely supported bridge there.

W44: The FG layering ruins it a bit for me.

W45: Big, vanilla-ish room. Left side is a bit too barren for that tunnel to be there.

RotY: BF's 1st winning room, week 13.
Lunaria

#2
I nominated:
[Week Twenty-Six: 7/10/10 - 7/16/10]
[Week Thirty-Three: 8/28/10 - 9/3/10]
[Week Forty-One: 10/23/10 - 10/29/10]

These three are the ones I find the best overall of all the entries.

This post is mainly a reminder to myself as that other topic as not been made yet! :specialed:

With regards to the format, I recommend a slight revision to the current weekly format. Instead of having submissions separated from voting, have submissions for the next week while voting for the current week is on. That way, people get more time to make their rooms, and there won't be any real downtime when squigo is lazy unable to update.

IMetroRat

Week 33 Holy shit Crys... THAT IS SHEER CRAFTSMANSHIP :D

I second the motion.

MultiK1llZ

Okay, It took a while for me to chose some weeks but, I think I have a good list of 3 weeks that really struck me to say "how the hell was it possible to make such a masterpiece?!".
1. Week 4 (Dman): Holy Shit. Thats all I can say.
2. Week 13 (Black Falcon): This should be what Metroid Prime 2D should look like O_O
3. Week 16 (Black Falcon): You do not now how much this lowered my self-esteem. This is to good to exsist.
And thats all I have to say for now..

Qactis

For me:
Digital_Mantra's Week 4
Black_Falcon's Week 16
Webber1900's Week 44

Dman's room really catches my eye and there's a lot of minor details in it that you have to study to see, such as the acid eating away at the Chozo's head, that's cool as hell.
BF's room is probably my favorite out of the three, all of the tilesets are blended perfectly, and the palette is gorgeous for what it's supposed to represent.
Webber's room just has a mind-bogglingly good design, an insane amount of layering, and a great palette.
squishy_ichigo

I like how everyone is like "3 nominations lol"

I dunno, I think it works pretty well. Besides, to me, the three that I picked were the only ones that really stood out as being superbly over the bar to me, so it worked out to fit just right anyway.

This was a hard choice between:

Week 4
Week 16
Week 26
Week 30
Week 36

Eventually in came down to weeks 26 and 30.
The winner for me is week 30.
EDIT: Well, since Squishface updated us... My choices are:
Weeks 30, 26, 4.
squishy_ichigo

So did several posts get lost when Fazewire went down? Anyways....

As I mentioned before, this topic is going to be used for nominations now, contrary to what was originally stated.  You may submit up to THREE nominations. Sorry for the confusion.

1st place : Black Falcon
[Week Sixteen: 5/1/10 - 5/7/10]
This room is just insane. I'm still to this day noticing different details and elements to it. I couldn't criticize this room even if I took a microscope to it. The tileset, the detail, the layout and secret passages, everything about it is flawless in my eyes.

2nd place : Webber
[Week Ten: 3/20/10 - 3/26/10]
I could be wrong, but this seemed to be the first time I seen someone use multi-layering in that manner. It's a design tactic that I've since tried to emulate myself, but Webber is just a better designer in general than me. Not only does this room look great, but the concept alone is ingenious.

3rd place : DMantra
[Week Four: 2/6/10 - 2/12/10]
Do I even need to explain why this room is so great? Didn't think so.

Digital_Mantra

1st Place: Black Falcon (Week 16)

2nd Place: Jamiewebb (Week 33)

3rd Place: Webber (Week 2)

Crashtour99

1st place: Black Falcon week 13
2nd place: Grime week 24
3rd place: Webber 1900 week 10

Lots of good rooms here, but my vote goes to snarfblam's Week 26 room.

Parabox

Week 16, huge plant room is SO crisp.

Black Falcon

RotW 44, really. I first counted 6 visual layers, but then I counted again and got 8.
I think that's probably still not enough.
