The reason the show is so good is quite a mess. The characters are good, and so is the animation, the plot on the other hand is rather bad I admit, however, YMMW. The reason why it has been blown so much out of proportion is quite simply that everyone expected the show to be terrible just like all other seasons before it has been before, but instead, it's above decent on the animation and character qualities alone.

The idea that it's for little kids is ridiculous.  How many kids would recognize the Benny Hill reference, or all the other older cultural references that are heavily laden in the show (the Diamond Dogs are obviously a reference to David Bowie).  Ever watch Animaniacs?  Or Pixar movies?  How about old school Loony Toons?  Same thing.  Maybe it's supposed to be for little kids, but there's plenty for older generations to enjoy as well.

Geared toward an age group, but fun for the whole family. It's a win-win. Alternatively, perhaps the creators came from all different walks of corporation and threw in their own little ideas...
