in your guys honest opinion which do you like better? normal ground FPS or 6dof like Descent (1-3) or darkplaces ( i dont like darkplaces tho).

Quietus

I prefer standard FPSs, but that doesn't mean I don't like the others.  Also, they're coming closer together anyway, as nearly all FPSs are being ruined by those 'veehickle' things, whatever they are... :O_o:

Zhs2

I like them all. I would love to see more games that use the six degrees of freedom besides old old games, though - I just learned about Forsaken/Project X after googling 6DoF, and I'm gonna give that a shot right now.

Blarget2

yes i see what you mean, like that one fps with space suits jumping on asteroids with jet packs...... planet side i think?

As Quietus said, a lot of FPS games are slowly becoming one huge conglomeration. There's little originality or even variability between a lot of the games these days. I usually just pick one or two series and stick with them until they start to suck. I liked the first couple Medal of Honour games, for instance, then they became stale once the whole "Hey guys, play Rising Sun and wait for the never-quel!" crap went down. Halo I couldn't get into because it tried to be serious when you're using Nerf blasters as weapons and the aliens are giggling and laughing and screaming for cover.

Now I just stick to stuff like Half-Life, Bioshock, the older Doom games, and so forth. I don't venture into FPS land much anymore as a result. Probably the reason I don't like the Prime series as much as the 2-D games.

Also I have no idea what "6dof" means so I probably answered this wrong.

D2x xl is a enhancement port for a 1996 game called Descent2.

EDIT: and look how glitchy that version is O.o

Oh, I see. Yeah I'm vaguely familiar with that type of gameplay, just hadn't heard of the term before. Honestly the game in that vid looks kinda fun and I wouldn't mind giving it a go if my computer wasn't absolute shit at the moment. I'll have to make a note of it and look it up when I get my new computer that doesn't cry everytime I run something graphical.

Oh my god, what source port is that? D2x-XL and Rebirth don't add anything awesome like the dynamic lighting and shot models for the weapons like the Laser Cannon and the Spreadfire like in the video there. Hot holy damn.

Hiroshi: The game itself that that is based on was released circa 1995, so you could probably run the original in DosBOX no trouble. The source ports of Descent are pretty bad nowadays anyway...

I actually am familiar with Descent and Forsaken, but I can't say I've ever actually played them. I'll definitely look into them though.
