Just a long awaited update:

This hack has taken me alot longer l thought it would.. but that's just because I haven't been working on it.
My New Year's Revolution is to have SM: Freestyle released before Christmas 2010.  It may be released earlier, but hopefully not later.
The only hacking I have done in the last 6 months is when I spent an hour trying to make a christmas hack.  But 2010 will be a new year!

Don't give up hope! :D

EDIT: Pic added for proof that I'm still alive.. which I now realize the brightness was set to blazing

Look's simple enough, are you thinking about changing the palette's for each area?

devonodev

Nah I'm not gonna change any palettes.
I want it to be just like the original, except more open.

A Super Metroid hack where you can literally go everywhere and anywhere with no real sequence. The idea in itself sounds pretty neat and would be quite interesting. Being able to go where you want when you want sounds like it'd be fun for a few plays. Hell, you could probably turn it into a contest to see how fast you can beat the game using different paths.

However... *head scratch* Maybe it's just me, but I think it might be kinda boring. I mean, I find enjoyment in sequence breaking using my own (limited) talents. If the game does the breaking for me, then I guess a small bit of the fun is taken out of the game. Not only that but it removes the (small) challenge there is in getting items. However, this is just my small insignificant opinion.

Mind you, I'm not saying it's a bad idea; I think it sounds great. But I also think it might get a bit stale after a while. Then again, what doesn't?

I'm not sure how I'm comming off in this post at this point... but when this hack is done I'll certainly try it. Who knows, I might eat my words and it'll be fun for ages. xD

devonodev

So. I've completed a few more rooms today. For the first time in over a year.
Progress has started again, but I can't promise that it will keep going.
I can't guarantee this will ever be finished, but I really would like to release it eventually.

Perhaps later I shall post some pictures.

Just thought you might like to know.  :3

What happened to yo resolution bro? C'mon, don't be lame. Finish dis shit. Also, if changing the bosses to take non-charge beam damage is too tricky, I'm sure there's a way you could allow charge beam to work from the very beginning without adding to the item percentage. Then you could replace charge beam itself with like, some sort of charge beam upgrade or something so 100% is still possible, etc.

Oh yeah, and I can't make any guarantees I won't do a repalette of this hack for you when it's done, just 'cause I love making palettes. So it'd be like an alternate release dealio, maybe with some other tweaks added for cool factor. Provided you don't mind. Maybe more incentive for your ass to finish this, yeah?

devonodev

Yes, that does give me a bit more incentive actually. ahah
And I'm not worrying about any of the technical ASM stuff 'til I'm done with level design.

I have 6 rooms left to edit in Lower Norfair, then onto Wrecked Ship.
After that is Maridia, which I'm not really sure what I'll do with that.  I feel as though I should make suitless possible, but it would require a lot of work, and many platforms which could just make it more annoying to go through if you have Gravity Suit. Editing the whole of Maridia so it can be explored with no suits/boots/walljumping seems like it could hinder the level design, and make it look too cluttered.

Thoughts?

Quietus

You could always alter the underwater movement physics, so that without the suit your movement is still better than normal, but you still can't speed boost or do the full-speed stuff.

Crashtour99

Exactly as Quietus said.  For an excellent example, see Crys' hack Ice Metal.  It has by far the best underwater physics.

devonodev

Ah k, that's a good idea. I'll look more into that maybe.
And I'll check out the physics in Ice Metal and see what it's like. Thanks

I would like to see a TAS for this soon after it is released.  I'm definitely going to play this one.

I probably might try it, isn't it like an opening of every area, possible from the beginning? or was that something else.....

A TAS of this hack wouldn't be much different to the normal any% TAS.  Since all bosses are still required to beat the hack, then the items collected will pretty be the same as normal, which is very little.  Three energy tanks, Gravity and Varia, the beams (for quicker bosses), and Missiles for the Zebetites / glass (if they're left in).

Unless you're speaking solely about completion time, in which case it'll be considerably quicker.

devonodev

All of Norfair is now complete, apart from 1 room with scrolling errors that I'll return to.  :^_^:

But now I need some help, with Wrecked Ship. I've decided to have the ship awake before defeating Phantoon, but I really don't know how.
I made a topic in Engine Works, so it would be best to answer there if you know how to help.

begrimed

What kind of scrolling error? Like, what room is the error in. A screenshot'd be nice.

As for suitless underwater. You could either make walljumping underwater without gravity suit possible, or leave walljumping as it is (nearly impossible) and add platforms and stuff to let people get around instead.

devonodev

It was room 7B510, but I managed to fix it, so there's no problem there anymore.
And I can delete states now, assuming it's not screwing something else up I'm unaware of.

So Wrecked Ship will be awake from the start of the game, and I'm considering doing the same for all of Crateria too.

As for Maridia, I'm thinking I could perhaps give the water same physics as when you're in lava/acid. You move slower and can't speed boost, but jumping is pretty much the same as normal.
Would this be very difficult to do?

Quietus

Nah, some simple hex tweaks is all, and they're pretty much at the top of the Hex Tweaks page, in the first section.

devonodev

Ah thanks, that's good then. Yeah that doesn't look too hard.
I'll experiment with it a bit once I'm done with Wrecked Ship.

devonodev

Heh. Well. You see, about that... Yeah.

devonodev

SURPRISE, ITS RELEASE TIME!

Not really. Its 'Im-never-gonna-work-on-this-again-so-lets-release-my-unfinished-product' time. But same thing really.

Rooms are edited up to around Norfair somewhere, and some rooms before there might not be 100% perfect.
If anyone wants to revive this as their own project, go ahead. Otherwise, I'll just leave this to die, as it slowing decends into the dark depths of Metconst.

Patch is on the first post.

Charmander106

I'm really sad this didn't get done and will probably stay that way.
I will try the game when I have time.
