I just started working with smart as I thought auto re pointing would make starting out less of a chore. but without an actual guide on how to use the program I'm forced to figure out how to mess with the level layout. I've read the guide that was posted with smart but it doesn't really explain what the tools do or how to use them. I've also read the guide for smile but wasn't as helpful.so I was wondering if there was anyone that's used it that would be able to give a more in-depth explanation or if I'm stuck to learning smile instead

If you haven't already, see http://wiki.metroidconstruction.com/doku.php?id=super:editor_utility_guides:smart

Otherwise, it'll be difficult to give help without some more specific questions.

Yea, I've read it wasn't as helpful as I would like, but I guess a good one to start with is how I add items  I assume that you have to place the tile then add how they behave but I have no idea on we're to start with enemy placement.

Some of those overlap with functions within SMILE RF without tucking into repointing too much. Have you read through the Mod Manual?

Beefyboi

I have pours over a bit of it, what confuses me more is how much hex editing I actually need to do to modify a room, and how you know what these codes actually do.

Quietus

It depends on how much editing you want to do. If you want to just change tiles round to make rooms look different, then no hex editing is needed. If you want to start adding rooms or expanding rooms, then you'll need it a lot more. For basic hex tweaks to alter aspects of the game, you can use hex edits already found, which is easy, or you can find your own, which is a bit more advanced.

By doing some basic room editing, linking doors and things like that, it'll give you a much better foundation for beginning to understand how the hex side of things stacks up.

Beefyboi

Allright you've been good help, my last question for now would be what I would do with extra doors I don't need for a room I'm editing and what should be done with the rooms connected to it. Or if I should start from scratch.

The idea of SMART is to remove all the manual hex editing parts. I think the best thing to do if just try out the dfferent tools and see what happens when you use them. Then when you understand it, update the guide
