Metroid Construction Olympic Games

Announcing the MetConst Olympics, where you are invited to join in and attempt to claim a medal for yourself in the individual events, along with a prize for landing in one of the top three overall across the games.

The entire Olympics will encompass 10 races of various hacks and randomizers, set across 10 months. In total, there will be 5 different Super Metroid events, 3 GBAtroid events, and two NEStroid events for this year. These will include both randomizers and hacks across all the games, a complete listing of each event will follow:

February-          GBAtroid #1         Spooky Mission - Any%
                     Low: 25:00   -   High: 1:25:00
March-            SM #1            Legacy - Any%
                     Low: 60:00   -   High: 2:30:00
April-            NEStroid #1         Rogue Dawn - Any% All Bosses

August-            NEStroid #2         Metrandomizer - Very Complex%
                     Low: 38:45 -       High: 4:08:00
September-         SM #4            Hyper Metroid - Any%
                     Low: 1:01:00 -    High: 4:45:00
October-         GBAtroid #3         Freezeflame - Any%
                     Low: 18:45 -       High: 2:24:00
November-         SM #5            SM Decision - Any%
                     Low: 38:25 -       High: 3:03:00

(Please note these times are subject to change.)

Each event for the month is known in advance to allow every entrant time to prepare for each one. Each race will be timed and scored based on three factors. Being there at the start of the event, finishing the event, and time to finish the event. Scoring will be done as follows:

Starting the race:       5 Points
Finishing the race:      5 Points
Time to finish:      15.000 to 0.000 Points

There will be a total max score of 25.000 points for each event. Starting and finishing a race will get you 10 points in itself. The head-to-head results of the race doesn't matter, as you will be racing against the clock. Two times will be given. A low time, usually going to be set very low to make it unlikely, but possible to reach, and a high time, set far beyond expected end time.

EXAMPLE:

Fake Event #1 - Metroid (NES)
LOW TIME:    22m         15 points max
HIGH TIME:   3h         0 points

With this event, getting a time below 22 minutes will net you a max score of 15. Getting a time above 3 hours will net you a score of 0. However, forfeiting because you passed this very generous time will also prevent you from collecting 5 points for finishing the event, so make sure you finish.

Times between the given low and high times will be run through a math thing and that will give the final game score to three decimal points.

Now, to make this more balanced, as there is definitely not a huge crossover between a lot of runners from Super Metroid to GBAtroids to NEStroid, the highest game score, and the lowest game score will both be dropped. Since Super makes half of the total events, being good in just Super won't immediately give you a huge advantage if you suck balls in the other groups, while they also won't hurt too bad because the lowest score at the end will be dropped. Being balanced across all three platforms will be the biggest benefit.

The ratio of SM to GBA to NES can and will change, just at the moment there is a lot more content to pick from for Super than the others. To change this, please keep making more hacks, especially those of high quality or that make for a good run, as priority will be given to those. If you think a hack or randomizer or other utility would be good, please speak with either Jiffy or MetroidMst at this time until the committee is formed.

RACE RULES
There will be two races of the event each month. (Hopefully with a restream!)
You can join both races. You will only receive the start and finish points once, however, your higher game score will be kept for the total. So if you bomb the first race, you can join the second and maybe gain a few points! This is being done to allow flexibility for those who might have things pop up during one of the race times. Everything will be equal across hacks, however, for randomizers we will be using two different seeds. Allowing players to join both means if one seed is definitely faster, they get to keep their score from that seed. If a player has to miss one randomizer race and ends up with a slower seed than the first race, the result will stand with no additional adjusting.

If you run a first event in the month and get a score you think you can't top, you won't be punished for not showing up. In fact, if you manage to get a max score on the first race, there is no point to racing the second time as you can't improve your standing any further. You can still show up for fun and practice.

All runners will be required to have an account on SpeedRunsLive, and all races will take place in a race room there. (http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/) Each event will have a gatekeeper, and the game score will be calculated on the finish time in the SRL server. It is recommended you get a timer like Livesplit, which has integration with SRL. Make sure you set up your account beforehand, an event will not be delayed because you try to set up your account the day of the race. Be prepared beforehand. Be on time. Respect your competitor's time.

Finally, the top three competitors will receive various prizes, including a gold, silver, and bronze forum badge for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. Some other trinkets and things are still TBA.

It is possible we may need other members to assist the restreaming process. This is an opportunity for experienced members and amateurs to learn a few things about helping in the background. The form below has this as an option. (You are allowed to run as well as restream - it is not limited to one or the other.) Any users helping out will become a part of the Shinespark committee.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the main form: https://forms.gle/nrJPovAMpBwEEsHYA

Finally, for each event, a new topic will be created with the dates/times for the race, which will also breakdown the rules and categories in more detail for that race, as different games and categories will have specific circumstances not present in other events. Finally, if you have questions about what is allowed in an event, please ask in this topic as the purpose of giving a full list ahead of time is to allow people the chance to practice. So if something will affect runners, or something is banned, it's best to know ahead of time so you can practice with that in mind.

With all that out of the way, here's to a first successful Metroid Construction Olympics!

Lenophis

No Prime or Echoes. 0/10. Definitely not MetroidMst's fault, despite it being his fault.  :bounce:

Will try and join!

Jiffy

After the success of the first event, there are likely more people who want to join the event. We'll be reopening the application form for those who wish to join late. (This will be for Event #2 onwards.)

Event #2 will be announced next week, as well as results for Event #1 posted here.
