Thanks.  I have no idea how I missed the one by bombs.  The map pretty much tells you its there.  That was dumb.  :eyeroll:  I've tried to be a little more intrepid in my exploration and since found two more so now I have three and I'm doing much, much better.   Like many of the commenters above I had a hard time getting into this hack at the beginning.  I found it slow and got tired of dying all the time.  But now I'm really enjoying it.  I just beat the Kraid boss.   I think I have most if not all of the powerups.  The amount of work that went into this game is amazing.

I also very stupidly played for like an hour where I didn't realize I could mid-air morph so there were several passages I didn't realize I could wall-jump and morph into.  Once I figured that out it helped a lot.

Here is my edit of the included color map that marks all locations of the E tanks and missile upgrades.  Note that this map doesnt necessarily tell you how to get to each one, but marks out exactly where they appear on the grid.  Obviously, do not open if you want to explore for the items yourself!

I still lost an e-tank after saving, going from 4 to 3.   I'm playing 1.21.   Saved in the final hive area.

Edit:  I reverted to an earlier save state and tried again and couldn't duplicate the problem.  Now it is working.   Not sure what's going on.

@Digital_Mantra Because it just feels wrong to be handed something to you, and have it be just that easy. What makes speedrunning special -- is discovering a glitch that was not intended, and playing through the game in an unintended way. Perhaps it was a terrible idea to ask Grimlock to just place these shortcuts. Plus...v1.2 just plays and feels weird as compared to v1.1 (Strangely enough).

No one asked me to add in shortcuts  :pwuh:.  I did add in alternate routes for 1.21 but the Intention was to add replay value.  Besides, anything that includes door exploits or wall clipping should be considered cheating.  It's fine if people want to play that style of gameplay but it should be considered a different class of achievement versus legitimately playing the game without utilizing exploits.  Don't speed running competitions set boundaries for what is and isn't acceptable?  Seems like it would be pretty easy to set varying levels of speed running formats.  That being the case I don't personally agree with your complaint.

It doesn't bother me personally, but I kinda get what he's talking about.

It's the difference between Super Metroid and Metroid Zero Mission.
In Super Metroid most of the short-cuts are from performing tricks that the developers could have never anticipated like the early Super Missile using Mock-Ball.
Which feels more organic, and it's like you are actually breaking the intended boundaries of where you're supposed to go.
It just wouldn't be quite the same if there was hidden bomb blocks that let you skip those gates to get the Super Missile early.

In Metroid Zero Mission most of the short-cuts are put there specifically for the player to use, like the big drop shaft in Norfair that lets you get to Ridley's lair early on.
But it ends up feeling more artificial, like you're supposed to find this path, and it's only because of the developer that you are allowed to pass by this point early on.

Again it doesn't bother me personally, and I think the extra alt routes that were added are pretty cool, but I can understand why people may prefer the former over the latter.
It's not really something that can even be done on purpose, it just sorta happens and people find that little slip in the code that lets them do something otherwise impossible in a game.

Hey Grimlock, I noticed that there wasn't full body art of Dawn available, so I commissioned a friend of mine to make one. Hope it's true to the design! I'm over the moon with it.

Pretty great. Managed to find Kraid through the backdoor by accident, then took the normal way to him.

Just wanted to say thanks to the creators - had a lot of fun playing this!

Quietus

I happened to just watch Spiderwaffle's WR run of this, and noticed a typo in the ending sequence. It says "BLINDY FOLLOW" instead of "BLINDLY FOLLOW".

That's my contribution.

I guess you could say he turned a blind eye to that one.

Good game, even better then original metroid
next step is to make remake of this game on MZM engine at least
and also use this storyline about Dawn Aran VS Samus Aran in some game that takes place after Metroid: Fusion...

Edit:
I added an idea for a completly new game (with Galactic Federation, Space Pirates, Dawn Aran, Sa-X, X parasites colony and another queen metroid) that will take place some time after events of Metroid Fusion. In the General Hack Ideas.

And almost 40 beta testers, the entire design team, and thousands of players up until Quietus's video watching adventures (tisk tisk, couldn't even be bothered to actually play the game Mr. Quietus?).

Quietus

Hehe, actually I did, but I died a bunch of times to some of the eruption things. I then tried cheating for infinite health, just so I could play (and hopefully finish) it without worrying, but I couldn't seem to get that to work, so I stopped playing. :heheh:

Hello Grim,

I really have no idea how i can get Screw Attack. And two missiles, but alas i haven't tracked which ones i found, and heck the map doesn't either. So i neglect finding those too, but tell me how do i get screw?

Amazing hack, i just say it once again. You guys set the bar so high. So: @Grimlock, @snarfblam, @Optomon : Kudos!

And you, Grim, had so many ideas i also wanted to realize in my hack, that I'm really urged to change and /or get rid of some, while emphasizing unique factors. I know it won't ever reach this quality, but if i could possibly do a fine hack, near behind RD, i would already be pleased, as it's my first hack anyway.

Thanks Flower, I appreciate it.  Don't under estimate your abilities, I'm seeing some really impressive stuff coming out of your project.  You should push your hack as far as you can, you don't need all of the ASM goodies RD has to make an awesome game.  Just work within the limitations and utilize your resources as best you can.  Really it's all about graphics, level design, and music/sound.  You have control of all of those.  I'm actually really looking forward to playing your final release!

Regarding the screw attack:
Cryptic Hint:
Yee nay-ver fine me screw aye-tac on me ship matey!

...ok that was a crappy hint but maybe it'll put you in the right area
Basic Hint including area:
In the pirate ship look for places you can enter while morphed
More detailed hint:
Morph jump required, jump up into an opening while morphed.  Pirate ship area.
Full disclosure
At the top of the vertical shaft in the pirate ship morph jump up into an opening at the upper left.  You'll enter a secret area that contains the screw attack.
(detailed instructions on how to use the screw attack):
You have to touch the item to get it, then you just jump into stuff that's an enemy for fun.

Regarding the missiles:

This is my favorite Metroid ROM hack ever. I mean, I've only played three - Hyper Metroid, Redesign, and this - but this is the only one I've beaten. Mainly because SM's physics are unbearable for me, even more so than the original Metroid at times, and Redesign's difficulty drives me insane. Seriously, the guys who worked on this hack should make a Zero Mission hack to make up for M1's control limitations. If I knew anything about ROM hacking or sprinting I'd probably help.

One of the best hacks of Metroid I ever seen, seriously this is like almost a brand new game for the Nes! My only complain about it is why zero suit? Why not the chozo suit but but with better sprites! Out of That, the whole game is perfect!

Dawn Aran != Samus Aran. Dawn is fighting for the space pirates so she doesn't have access to the Chozo Gear. 'Nuff said.

DannyPlaysSomeGames

So I remember trying out and beating this ROM hack a while back. Now that I finally have a metconst account, I'm going to share on some of my opinions.

This game, in general, is fantastic. While it's not the absolute best NES ROM hack I ever played, it's p high up there.

Graphics are just gorgeous for NES. Everything looks nice and crisp, yet still retains that dark, foreboding Nestroid atmosphere. Music is just as fantastic (that Planet Surface theme easily gets stuck in my head.) Props to Optomon for that. Sound effects are nice too.

Gameplay-wise, it's Metroid, and while it's not the best level design I've ever seen, it's still impressive. Controls are the same, but are still p good. The new additions like the healing stations, mazes and save system is top notch, and are all really neat for gameplay.

If I did have a couple of complaints, I will say that it's very easy to exploit some of the glitches (skipping the final boss is as easy as spamming up and down hoping that you get clipped in the rocks, ngl) and some of the enemies are somewhat tedious.

Overall though, great job.

Oh man, I've been trying to play the latest version on real hardware with the Everdrive N8 (all version from v12 to the v20-RC7). Has anyone been able to get this game to work on real or clone hardware? Works fine in emulators, just not on real hardware or the RetroUSB AVS.  Looks great though and really good music.

Yes, it works on an ED N8, but with one exception:

I've been playing Metroid : Rogue Dawn v1.21 succesfully on an original unmodified NES frontloader using an Everdrive N8 with the latest OS (v20-RC7), but only the alternate patches will work...  These are the "zero-suit" and "no map" patches; the primary patch fails to load on the N8 at this time...  Try the alternate patches!

edit:  I didn't perform a regression test for all of the release candidates of v20 for the Everdrive, but I *did* try all of the Rogue Dawn 1.21 patches with the v16 OS and all of them completely failed to load with that version...

Hello. I had visited a used games store near me and, among the NES games, was a copy in-box of Metroid: Rogue Dawn for 60 dollars. Being a Metroid game I'd never heard of, I did a little research and found out about the game. I am intrigued, and I would like to check the game out. However, looking online, I see a variety of different cartridge designs and artwork. I wanted to ask, is there a place to get a cartridge that is affiliated with you? I would want to know which is the "official" version, so to speak.

This is the version I had seen in the game shop. https://images.app.goo.gl/puzcEPz3yi1dWhVt5

There's also this one. https://www.etsy.com/listing/526978631/metroid-rogue-dawn?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-electronics_and_accessories-video_games&utm_custom1=813cfe7c-4b4e-41ac-8ebd-21bf82aea9a3&utm_content=go_1843970779_69216056345_346429262066_pla-353987697789_c__526978631&gclid=CjwKCAjw1rnqBRAAEiwAr29IIzSygFuW0TQvWdyOJovlblpw7I3heY83krnb1XxmVppktR0AzlNQbxoCLP8QAvD_BwE

And this, among others. https://images.app.goo.gl/HaJLEBWac8sRtTQG7

Now, I would love to be able to support you guys. This looks like an awesome game from what I've seen, so is there one of these that's considered the "official" cartridge art, and if so, is there a place to buy it to support you? Thank you in advance. :)

You have been scammed, friend. There is no official rogue dawn cart. These are people trying to make a quick buck selling other people's stuff.
