I've been noticing a subtle trend in some Super Metroid ROM Hacks lately, and while it's one I don't really like, I'm not sure how people will react to the possible solution.

Not many hacks have had many platforming challenges.

You know, jumping from platform to platform, dodging/shooting enemies in the way, trying not to fall into spikes/lava/pits/etc. This is pretty much gone in most ROM Hacks I've seen and even in the original game. Am I the only one who wants to see more of this?

The only hacks I've seen even try this are Super Metroid Redesign (both the original and Axeil) and maybe some of Hyper Metroid... maybe.

What I mean is that a lot of the ROM Hacks I've been seeing are less about platforming and more about exploring. This isn't the worst thing, but I was hoping to see one that tried the other end for once, or better yet, had an even mixture of both like the original Metroid.

I presume this means that the Space Jump will have to be a very late game item, if it's even there at all.

Feel free to leave your two cents.

We have that race series of hacks that is pretty much exclusively about speedrunning and precession platforming, right?

It's also never really been the focus for Super Metroid, which is the most widely hacked game here. Yes, there are certainly platforms in the game, but it isn't a platform game. It's more about the exploration, to find the next power-up to open the next area, until all bosses are defeated, which in turn opens access to the final area. Most hacks follow this resipe for good reason.

Forgot to clarify that I was looking for hacks that tried to be their own thing rather than being short speedrunnables (because I am horseshit at TAS) and yes, I get it Queitus, SM is largely exploration based, but that's the thing, I wanted a hack that tries to incorporate some platforming challenges as well (like the original Metroid). Play Cliffhanger

I shall do exactly that.

SLI also has a focus on platforming. (With a lot of punishment for being a #scrublord)

Scrub - A person who always claims that the other player(s) cheated when they lose.

Noob - Derived from Newbie, a person who is incompetent at a game due to a lack of experience.

You get an Artistic Licence in Vocabulary.

I believe 'scrub' is more generally used to mean a person who abandons something.

Jordan5

If you want the definition of scrub you should watch Mst try and speedrun Nestroid or play Rad Racer :heheh:

I think it's because Super Metroid's controls and constrained viewport generally aren't conducive to having a good platforming-centric experience

What exactly is the trend, a lack of platforming oriented segments? I ask because if so I wouldn't say that's a trend so much as component to the style of game Super Metroid and derivative hacks tend to be, rather than a fad. And what's the solution, having platform oriented segments?

Completely unrelated to Super Metroid, but have you played the latest SMW Central collab? Some people do some very interesting stuff with the underlying game there. I think most Super Mario hacks are absolute garbage, but this one has a lot of really good levels. Anyway, it just comes to mind when I think of good platforming experiences and romhacking.

Grimlock

Rogue Dawn (M1 hack in progress) has a few areas I would consider platforming challenges.  I didn't get carried away with them but I did make a point to add a few in each area.
