Super Metroid: lömpo
This is the first hack im making.
* a full hack
* all bosses will be in
* its project base
* not a hard/skill hack
* for some items like extra missiles you will need to do some skills
* you may need to do easy walljumping sometimes
* picture 1

Scyzer

Can't really say much about those rooms, since there's not much of anything going on in there. The tile placements in the second room along the bottom might cause some raging though. Not very well thought out IMO. That said, if this is the first time you've used SMILE, then you're doing a very good job.

i have worked on this hack for 3 weeks and i need much more time to make it done.

You'll need about 3-4 more years to get it done actually, if you want it done to a good standard. Good luck :P

Quietus

I wonder how many people that have completed full hacks would have done so if they were all told that from the beginning, Scyzer? :yay:

Plutia

It's always nice to see more hackers, imo. Good luck with this!

thank you!

Yeah, best of luck with this.  I'm more than happy to help play test for you when you have something ready (as a medium/low ability player I can be a useful barometer as to whether you're making the game too hard)  :nod:

Retroo

i want BETA testers later on.

personitis

As Scyzer has said, being your first few weeks with SMILE, this isn't bad by any means. First picture needs some more filler in the wall much like the second picture which did that pretty darn well. Also on the Norfair room, the spikes on the ceiling seem funnily out of place yet don't take away or add to the room either so... :heheh:

Good luck with your project!

Smiley

Looks like you need testers before releasing anything.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

Also, "I'll fix it later" is not an excuse.

Retroo

if you want to be a beta tester send me a pm =)

Before I say anything, I am a constructive critic, not an ass, what I mean is I'll point out any flaw I can find only with the purpose of trying to provide a new quality hack. Your pallet is good, I can tell you used Project Base, professional graphics xD But on the serious end, I can't see the BTS in this, but ehhhhh I can tell by your tiling that you're new to this so I can make a fair assumption that if you do desire for this to be a full released hack, you'll want to revisit that later on, now your tiling itself at least in the image you just posted, is pretty damn good, with maybe a few very minor flaws, ones that don't stand out unless you nitpick for them, although, the flow is still of an amateur level, what I mean is, your flow is still quite blocky, and unnatural, mountainous areas never really did come to a straight 90 degree angle, now did they? not that those are bad but in corners against walls, that's something we try to avoid, add some ridged angles to the walls to add depth, and try to stay away from straight diagonals or straight lines, a general rule I was taught when I first started was "Every 4 tiles in a Crateria area should have some type of slope block to keep things different" Good luck, good sir.

just showing some in game    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gVJaaN3exE&feature=youtu.be
If you want the video to be embedded here, change the https:// to http:// in the link, like so:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gVJaaN3exE
Apart from that, I don't have much to say. The video seems unnecessary when you're just showing off one room. While the palette looks nice (I think it's default PB though so that doesn't say much), the tiling itself is very plain. One odd thing I noticed is that some of the brick tiles have lines on them like this: \/ You can clearly tell that you've just flipped the tile, and considering there is a tile in the set that tiles correctly, that is with the lines going the same way, it just looks inconsistent.

FullOfFail

I'm digging the atmosphere, but as others has stated, your tiling needs work. As much as I'd like to explain how and why, I can't. It just comes with trial and error of level designing. The ruins are just way too formal. While it's true the Vanilla SM used them this way, I'm not  convinced a hack should. Also, I'd stay away from the CRE when plausible, it's actually one of the harder things to look natural. Just keep hacking, you'll see what I mean eventually.

TobiMikami

That is a very good point, each one of us, including myself, have built this game and our hacks from experience, and using vanilla SM is discouraged in modern SM hacking, some games like Redesign did a great job at pulling it off (I mean, that Crateria palette was pretty fierce) but we're not just redesigning SM, we're making new versions of it using it as an engine so to speak, my best advice I can give; Stay in the game, never give up, and keep moving forward.

Quietus

I'm not sold on the 'no vanilla' idea.  I certainly welcome new tilesets, but it's still very possibe to create a great hack with vanilla assets.  Z-Factor is a good example of a recent hack that pulled it off.

MetroidMst

I have to agree with Quietus. There is nothing wrong with vanilla tilesets. (Except Red Crateria and the Wrecked Ship.) I think the issue most have with vanilla tilesets, is when they're used, but the palette wasn't changed. Or the palette was changed, and it was changed to some barf crap.

TobiMikami

Good point, change the palettes right like Redesign did and it looks really freaking awesome, the only other thing that tends to go bad is tiling wise, considering some of the tilesets can be a real pain like the green Brinstar and some types of Norfair, and when working with vanilla especially, the way you use the tiles can definitely make or break the hack. Although, that rule applies to any graphics with any hack, if we wanted to play broken games with crap graphics we'd all download E.T. and an Atari emulator.

Implying that any Atari games really had good graphics in the first place -- and even then, E.T. isn't even that broken unless you can't google the manual for some odd reason.

FullOfFail

There's nothing wrong with going with Vanilla design-wise, but that takes even more experience because there's a certain formula to it. I've tried doing that strict vanilla feel before, and it just seems like you're limiting yourself most of the time. Think you gotta have A.D.D. and O.C.D. level 1,000 to pull it off correctly.

TobiMikami

While true, E.T. was considerably rushed i mean 6 weeks, plus the controls are shotty. But Fail has a point, the original doesn't for me express my creative outlet enough, which is the main reason I hack. It's hard enough to keep motivated to spend years sometimes building a full hack with custom stuff and your creativity, it takes someone with some serious time, patience, and literally nothing better to do, no friends, no job, no relationship, just an empty house with the vanilla SM and SMILE.
