Voting ends on 3/15/2014 so get to it

Best use of central items So Little Items (even though the grapple sections were maddening, they were certainly central)

Best use of winter theme Ice Returns (the only hack that actually had what looked like ice in it)

ASM/hex changes So Little Items (crazy music, Shaktwoon)

Overall best So Little Items (had the most fun playing this one)

Overall worst SMCompetition (found a game-breaking bug and a game-breaking forced-crouch-without-morph tiling error within minutes)

Let's see here...

Best use of items:  MetroidMst used his items for evil, so I'm giving this one to Epysbane.
Best winter theme / aestheticsEpysbane, no real contest here.
Best ASM/Hex:  I'm voting Sunshine Oddity here even though it was thoroughly bug-ridden, because there were a lot of cool ideas in here and some of them did actually work.
Overall Best:  This is a tough one.  Sunshine Oddity's would be a shoe-in if it had been better tested and polished.  Epysbane suffers from having a custom boss with stupid amount of health syndrome.  SMCompetition suffers from that awful grapple room.  SLI is way more polished and more entertaining than I expected it to be, and I almost gave it the nod here.  But in the end, I'm going to have to go with Sunshine Oddity.
Overall Worst:  Gonna abstain here because I don't think any of the entries were bad enough to warrant it.

Other notes:
- I really enjoyed all the custom music everyone brought to the table here.
- I completed all 4 hacks, but SMCompetition and Sunshine Oddity were the only ones I beat on my first sitting--I had to come back to the other 2 later when I was in a more patient state of mind.
- Everyone here REALLY loves grapple.  Sorry Eppy.

Grime here has what my vote is too. I also liked all the custom music that was put up (Mst... Those Tracks :D)

So heres mine:
Best use of central items: So Little Items - It was hard but it stuck to the rules very well.
Best use of winter theme: Ice Returns -  I liked the theme, Runner-up being SMcomp since it had a nice set in the beginning tho..
ASM/hex changes: So Little Items/Sunshine Oddity - I know both of these had A LOT of effort into them.
Overall best: So Little Items - :D I just screamed and cried for 11 hours loved it too much
Overall worst: SMCompetition/SunShine Oddity - Had many some needed fixes and needed more time and care put into it. But they held their own none the less.

Vismund Cygnus

I won't vote because I made a hack that I liked mostly.
But here's some things about the hacks and stuff:
There were a lot of cool things in this hack, but it seemed to be thrown together so quickly that a lot of really simple bugs and stuff that should have been smooshed but weren't smooshed. But there were lots of really good ideas too, the boss was fun, the music was cool and SMNonCompetition is very good.

Like Dopey said, that Serris, although awesome, had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much health. Also it's AI was easily exploitable, I spent about 50% of the time playing this hack sitting in the one spot waiting for him to fly past so I could shoot him. I'd say the hack is ugly but that's because the theme was pretty ugly so I won't fault you for that.
Other than that, underwater physics are a pain in the ass and I hate them. Based on personal preferences, I disliked this, but I can see why people would like it.

I want to say fuck you, but this was good and that makes me sad, but also happy and mostly I'm just confused and what do I even think anymore
top hack 2010

EVEN I AM NOT SAFE FROM ME
Quote and I rushed this, starting after we decided to extend the timeframe of the competition, and it really shows. The sad part is that I really adore the work Quote and I did do on this, however in our haste we left in numerous bugs and poor gameplay things that almost broke the hack. That makes me sad. Expect a polished version at some stage, because Sunshine Oddity was fun to make, even though it was hectic as fuck to assemble in 3 weeks.
Well done everyone who entered. None of the hacks were actually shit, and that makes me happy!

But here's some things about the hacks and stuff:
Okay so, really sorry but man this hack makes me want to punch you. I know you fixed it up with the non competition one, and good on you for that, but god damn. The contest hack version was awful. No health refills anywhere you could use it, grapple rooms that will murder you out of unfair positioning and damage, not because of player error. I'm not one to talk about unfinished hacks with bugs, but yours was not buggy. It was just brutal, and unfair. Also, why such a short shinespark timer??? Anyway the non contest one is great I hear, but this one has "no beta testing" written all over it.

Man, this could've been so good. I really enjoyed what I played when it was not insanely over the top difficult. Still, M2 music /and/ tetris music? Not bad misty, not bad. Unfortunately it's almost not completeable for most people due to that difficulty.

Man this hack really annoys me. Why? Because it could and probably will end up being, really good. It's completeable, has save stations, a custom boss, gfx that although they are not great are also not eye destroying (looking at you mst), and no difficulty spike? That all sounds like a good time. Only problem for me was the pace. It was soooooooooo slow. Suitless underwater is bad when the physics are not adapted to it. It just felt tedious and boring. Speaking of boring, dat boss fight. I love serris, I love sm, seems like a match made in metroid heaven. Take the health down and it will be.

+1 for the name. As vismund said, I really like a lot of what he and I put into this hack, and it really is a shame that we tried to throw it together in such a short time because it ended up like my other hacks, unfinished and filled with bugs. I love the tiling and gfx vismund put into this hack, and I enjoyed making the code and my gfx, as well as working with him. As is though the hack is in shambles. It needs fixing and we plan to do it, the one for the contest though really just felt thrown together last second, which is really too bad.
Yes crys I accidentally clicked save instead of preview, sorry. I finished my post.

Lunaria

Actually I thought it was ironic and pointed out at face value that you had no comment. Since that reflected my own view I just quoted it for maximum irony.
That is to say, I don't have any views of the hacks. I have not played any of the other ones, or even watched them, heck, I have barely even play tested my own entry. :p

Quietus

OK, so I feel bad that I didn't actually finish any of the entries.  My votes are based on what little I played:

Best use of central items: So Little Items, though I nearly quit early on, when I felt I was permastuck in the first Shaktool room.  Unless I missed something obvious, I couldn't reach either door once he'd been defeated.  I ended up manipulating the Rinka to go up and left, then jumped and damage boosted on to the platform in the top left-hand corner.
Best use of winter theme: Ice Returns.  I felt that the ice itself looked a little wacky, but it still gave an overall feeling of a frozen world.  I quit at the snake boss.  His speed was ridiculous, and I felt that there was no way any player could actually react upon seeing him.  You just had to get lucky, and hope that you moved in the correct direction.  For boss inspiration, the originals are good examples.  With a little observation, they all have patterns that can be avoided with relative ease.  I also ran out of missiles, and couldn't damage him.
ASM / Hex changes: Sunshine Oddity.  I'm voting on quantity rather than quality.  The only real changes I noticed (across all hacks) were keeping speed on landing, which I don't like, and the HUDs, which I don't like.
Best overall: Sunshine Oddity.  It was the hack I enjoyed exploring the most.  I also chuckled at the seemingly game breaking bugs.  Head right from the ship - permanently looping fall. :^_^:

I'm not voting any as 'worst', since I don't feel it achieves anything, and is only likely to make the author feel like 'screw entering anything in the future'.

Lunaria

I'm not sure if you're ironic with the name or if you simply never have played fusion...

Quietus

Or I simply couldn't remember its name.

Lunaria

It is one of the most memorable boss names in Fusion though... :v

This saddens me to no end. A little tinkering with that keeping running speed change and you would have made that jump easily.

I don't remember any of the bosses being named?  I obviously knew of Ridley, and was aware of the one called Nightmare, but none of them are ever named in-game that I recall.  Never mind.  You live, you learn. :^_^:

Quote from: MetroidMst on March 06, 2014, 08:04:33 PMA little tinkering with that keeping running speed change and you would have made that jump easily.
Well, I passed it my way. :heheh:

It matters not, as I later got stuck in the Boost Ball room. :eyeroll:

craighypheno

I do believe Serris was mentioned, at one point at least. It's been a while since I've played through it though so I could just be seeing things...

Quote58

Serris was definitely mentioned by name in fusion, but I understand not remembering it. Not remembering the fight though? That would be something else, as it's one of the most memorable fights in fusion.

Quietus

I remembered the fight, but I don't recall it being anywhere near as hard as in this hack.

Lunaria

Both Serries and Nightmare are named by name AFAIK.

craighypheno

I haven't seen played the hack but I've seen MST's video of it. It was far from being that difficult in Fusion!

Quietus

Probably.  I just never make much of an effort with remembering enemy names, let alone the fact that I haven't played Fusion for years.  To me, they're just spikey dude, blobby thing, swoopy boy, and worm bloke. :yay:

Lunaria

Hah, I guess. I normally don't keep track of enemy names, but considering the times I have played fusion and how memorable both Serries and Nightmare as bosses they kind of stuck with me! :P

So all-in-all, Where do we stand? Have we come to a conclusion?
