ULTRA-OFTEN

Hello! It's ya boy ULTRA OFTEN here. If you're looking to meet a new up and coming hacker with tons of skills building onto remakes, well it's not me. Sorry, I don't actually have any experience in hacking or anything like that.

I am a HUGE fan of the GBA. Metroid Zero Mission is my absolute favorite GBA game and my introduction into the Metroid series. Growing up I loved how you could choose your own difficulty not only by literally setting the difficulty as you wanted, but also by choosing to take shortcuts that would leave you with less power ups once you reached the area bosses.

I played Metroid Prime Hunters, but I gotta be honest.... I think the Prime series is crap. It was kind of a cool gameplay design, but compared to the impact Zero mission had on me, it was totally lackluster and I pretty much lost interest in the series as a whole because around the same time I got addicted to a game called League of Legends. Yeah, I know, it's as bad as it sounds.

Earlier this year, I came to the decision that the GBA was the best option for handheld gaming. The two screens of the DS and the 3DS just feel gimmicky to me, and I never found a game that utilized them in a way that made me crave two-screened gameplay. It was always like, the entire game was still on one screen and the other was a map or something. Besides that, there weren't as many titles I wanted to replay after going through them once, and replay-ability is super important to me when it comes to handhelds.

You may think, well dude, what about the switch? And while the switch isn't a bad console/handheld by any means, it still has to compete with the really nice gaming computer I bought to play League of Legends on. By the way, if you want to play LoL, you don't need a 1000$ machine to do it... it's super overkill. Still, now that I had that bad boy, it was hard to justify another expensive and high-graphics handheld. If I want amazing graphics, why don't I just sit down at the computer?

The GBA has exactly none of these problems. The graphics are retro enough to satisfy my nostalgia kick, without being so old as to look, well, shitty. Metroid 2 graphics, just look terrible to me, I'm sorry. The GBA also featured a whole host of titles that make me excited to replay them, Besides the two Metroid games for the GBA, there's also Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Zelda, Warioland 4, Kirby, and that's not even mentioning all the Mario games.

So earlier this year I found a GBASP for 50$ and started rebuilding my collection, which of course quickly led me to revisit Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. And something I've realized, is I fucking LOVE platformers!! Apparently there's lots of hype around Castlevania as one of the best platforming titles around, and I'm looking into it. I'm waiting for Aria of Sorrow to come in the mail so I can experience it for the first time.

WELL sorry to get all long winded here, I know nobody's probably going to care to read this but I'm bored so who cares if I type out my damn life story?

So what I'm doing on these forums, is searching for a way to play Metroid 2 and Super Metroid on my GBA. That's my dream. I want to hold it in my hands with a hacked cart pushed into my little handheld, and after scouring the net, it looks like this might be the place to find it. I'm SO HAPPY to see that this forum is active with posters in 2019, and it makes me think that maybe GBA remakes of these two iconic games might become available in the next couple of years.

I don't know much about hacking, at all. What I do know, is that if there exists a hacked rom of it, it can be pushed onto a physical GBA cart with a piece of hardware. So I'm out here basically cheering and rooting for anyone working on a Metroid 2 or Super Metroid hack of Zero mission or Fusion. I want to help in any way I can, though I realize I'm going to be pretty much useless to the geniuses who actually know how to successfully manipulate code. I could help with playtesting maybe, and glitch finding, or something like that. It's just that these four games, Zero mission, metroid 2, Super metroid and Fusion, if played back to back to back, tell a comprehensive yet minimalist story while also boasting some of the best gameplay known to platformers, and it's a shame and a travesty that they weren't officially remade for the GBA before Nintendo moved on to what I think of as lesser handhelds.

So please, if you know of any successful, complete GBA hacks of Metroid 2 or Super Metroid, help me find them. If you know of an individual or a team working on projects like this, help me find them so I can give them my support. I've only been on this forum for a couple of days and I've been distracted with real life stuff so I haven't gotten to dig around properly yet but it's next on my to do list. I suspect what I'm looking for may already be around somewhere and it'll just take more then a few lazy google searches to find them.

Well, that's quite enough out of me. Godspeed, hackers!

Here's some stuff you may be interested in, but none of these are finished and given the nature of this kind of project (a remake of X metroid game as a hack for Y other metroid game engine is a really common idea for new hackers who, upon realizing that this is quite a large project, eventually give up) may never be. However, some of these have more experienced and knowledgeable hackers working on them, so not all is lost.
For a SM remake in ZM, there are like a million hacks. Here are some that I know of currently in development:

For M2 in ZM:
There might be more. And there might even be some more that have released, I don't know. But that's all I know of. Feel free to do some more digging.

Thank you!!! It's hard for me to tell what's still in active development. I tried once to make a Fire Emblem hack when I was younger and failed gloriously, so I can definitely relate to people who think "oh it's just a gameboy advance game it'll be easy" then realize it's actually a daunting amount of code to sift through and an eternal amount of bugs to fix. But hey, if there's even one person working on it as a pet project, even if it comes out in 2025, that'd still be pretty amazing I think. I'll probably message those guys and cheerlead for them since that's about all I could do to actually help

Since I posted I found out about the MAGE tool, not sure how easy it makes hacking or what it offers but if it's user friendly enough I might have a go at making something silly myself. I'm on vacation on a chromebook right now so I won't even get to look at it for a while, but it's fun to imagine.

Anyways, again, thanks!! Fingers crossed those projects stay in development!!

No problem. It's hard for me too, though; that list probably isn't exhaustive. People often don't say when they quit development on a hack, so it isn't easy.

I hear MAGE is a pretty great and versatile tool, so it might be worth giving it a shot.
My advice to you, though, is the same advice that you'll see anyone here give people looking to get into Metroid hacking: Start small. I know that you probably want to make something huge like a SM remake in ZM or something as big as Hyper Metroid, but when you first start it's a much better idea to start with something small first. It'll help you learn the ropes much better, and maybe after a few small hacks you'll be ready for something big. A lot of people say that entering a contest is a great way to get started since those hacks are generally pretty small and the judges will give you good feedback. There is a contest going on right now (the deep blue contest), but there are only a couple weeks left, so you may want to wait for the next one. Keep an eye out in the contest board for that.

Feel free to hop into the discord if you ever have questions that people who actually hack GBAtroids can answer. And hey, you could always read some documentation on the wiki about MAGE or something if you want to get ahead of the game.

Multi-Man

Hello, I'm Multi-Man.

One of my favorite Metroid games is Metroid Zero Mission because it takes a rather primitive game and turns it into a timeless classic.

RalamDren

Hi to all, I'm Ralam.

I've discover this site while searching for Super Metrod romhacks, so I've registered here to stay updated about romhacks releases.

I've been playing Metroid games since I was a kid. My first Metroid game was Super Metroid, then I moved to Fusion and Zero Mission and later to the begining of the series. Today, I've finished all 2D series, only Prime and Another M left.

Hi all,

I'm a french web developer, fan of super-metroid hacks.
First i want to thank all the hackers who made hacks, i tried smile...but too complex for me.

So, i code in javascript, and made a little "metroid like" game with the phaser 3 framework.

Hello, I'm James. Metroid and Super Metroid are my favorite games from when I was young. I created a Metroid hack in 2007 called Metroid Enhance during the 3 months of freedom I had after I finished my doctorate and before I started working as a software developer. Now I teach computer science and sometimes game development and design.

Last month I watched a playthrough of Metroid: Other M because I couldn't stand playing it myself, but I was interested in Samus's story. That made me want to play a Metroid game that was actually fun, and I had heard of some good Super Metroid hacks. I looked for them and wound up here.

I understand NES assembly code pretty well, because it is the same as Commodore 64 assembly code, which I taught myself when I was a kid. Still, disassembly is a lot of work and I don't have time for it anymore. I have an idea for a Zelda II hack that I haven't had much time to work on. It may have to wait until I retire.

BenDoesThings

Sup. If you want to see someone new with tons of skill and can make absolute gems...
look somewhere else, that isn't me. I'm actually pretty bad at hacking. I have limited experience with MAGE, and have tried and failed to teach myself SMILE and Editroid as well. Your opinion is wrong, and see you next post.

Making my 1,721st return here; Hello, I'm Jamie, you may have known me as SChase, I'm a 16 year old novice game developer and artist residing around the east coast of the United States, for game development, I use Godot Engine, for art, I use Medibang Paint Pro. Hopefully I'll have the motivation to stay around these parts, I'm admittedly not the best when it comes to sticking around communities since I seem to like jumping between communities. I hope to enjoy my stay here even if it's only for a mere week, and I hope you're all having a wonderful day!

beehat

greetings people with normal hats

it is i, beehat

unrelated to the beehat64 on reddit, i don't know who that is because i don't have reddit

i enjoy nestroid, and pissing on graves

Hackmi

relatable, except the part where you said you enjoy nestroid.

CalvinGBC

Hey guys. I just need to make a post to certify my account. I have played a few hacks and I wanted to rate one and in order to do so, I had to create an account. So here I am.

Two ROM hack ideas I have are very straightforward and I am hoping to learn how to use SMILE to create them. My first idea, (and these may already exist! if they do, someone please point me to them) is a Metroid 2 remake in the Super Metroid engine.

My second idea is a romhack similar to SotN, where (spoilers ahead) right before you go to New Tourian, you have to go through the "second castle" or in this case, a second, inverted planet.

Hopefully I can learn to use SMILE but right now I am very focused on playing hacks! I am new to the ROM hacking scene, I've been playing True Boss Rush (which I believe had an unfairly low rating), Super Metroid Arcade, Super Metroid Ice Metal Uninstall (the first hack I played and completed), among a deal others.

honchy

Hey y'all, I'm honchy/h0nchy. I've always been a huge fan of the Metroid series; Prime was my starting point when I was a wee lass. I've played my fair share of SM romhacks years and years ago, but not so much recently. Recently tho I've started streaming, and decided to tackle SM Redesign a bit ago. A few people from here happened to watch my streams of it and now I'm here.
Mostly I made this post so I could rate and review hacks and stuff, but I'll try to be at least a little active otherwise. Hopefully.
Shoutouts to Drewseph and Metroidnerd9001 u da best

Hello everyone, i'm Guilherme.
Super Metroid was my very first game i played, Super Metroid and Super Mario Kart (the game it came with my SNES),
well, i play Super Metroid since i was a 7 years old kid, then, i know every corner of Planet Zebes, the game physics, and other stuffs.
I would like to help the community by testing hack projects and unfinished hacks.
If there's any project that need a tester, or if you don't have much time do hack and test, count on me.

NeoXen

Hey y'all, I'm NeoXen, but you can just call me Hayden!- My favorite Metroid games are Metroid Fusion and Metroid II: Return of Samus. I like messing around with graphics and little gimmicks in game projects and such- so don't expect a full-length hack from me anytime soon! I look forward to becoming friends with all of you. NeoXen, out-

latiusauro

Well, might as well introduce myself here.

I'm LatiusAuro, although you can shorten that to Auro. I am somewhat new to hacking myself - although my focus is currently on the GBA games, especially Fusion.

I would say that I'm best at coding (although learning ASM is a little tricky) but my main weakness would be map design. Sure, I may have an idea in my head as to how I want the world map to be laid out, but converting that into the actual rooms can be a bit tough for me.

I am often active on the Discord servers, where I would share ideas I have and bits which I have figured out. Which includes a nearly completed bit of code which allows Fusion to use an ammo system similar to that seen in Hyper Metroid.
