Just slapping this up here because it's pretty damn cool. Infidelity is working on an extensive Zelda hack that adds items like hookshot and Pegasus boots, and makes the overworld much, much bigger and more varied. For awesomeness in long-from, check out original thread on Board 2.

Pics:

And hopefully Infidelity doesn't mind that I whipped up a few screens to show how awesome this hack can turn out to be.

looks great, maybe now when i play it i won't get lost. xD

Snarf you did all the work with the Z1 HUD right? You should help him with his glitchfest of a HUD

snarfblam

He has as good a handle on the HUD as I ever did. It's fixed in his newest update.

The 00000000 00000000 is just a place holder. Presumably, each overworld will have a unique name in the final product.

Links awakening GFX FTW! I love that game.

Having recently beaten Zelda 1 for the first time, I am a little more excited about this than I was. Now if I could just beat the second quest (it's kicking my ass!)

I have been watching the progress videos posted in the other forum thread, and I am really impressed with what has been achieved with the NES limitations.  Link's Awakening is my absolute favourite 2D Zelda game, and I have never been able to enjoy the original game.  So anything that makes Zelda 1 more playable is fine by me!

MathOnNapkins

Yeah, the play control certain left something to be desired in Zelda 1. But most games of that era have that "problem".

Well I only ever played Duck Hunt and the original Mario when we owned a NES.  Then it got sold and I was left with a Spectrum, until I got a Super Nintendo.  I have since gone back and tried some NES games, and while I hate the fact Zelda 2 is side-scrolling and have never given it much time, I tried playing Legend of Zelda after seeing the cartoon, but it wasn't until I saw A Link to the Past, that I fell in love with the games.

If I can play Zelda one, with the same engine (close enough) as Link's Awakening, then I would play the fuck outta it!

Gotta love those blue Wizzrobes and Darknuts. If I hadn't beaten it as a kid, I'd probably never manage it. These days, I wouldn't be able to find the patience to walk around the entire overworld bombing every square inch trying to locate the last level. (What's a walk-through?)

Infidelity is a machine. It takes some serious dedication to keep chiseling away at the game like he does.

Anyone still interested in this should check out the recently released demos. The link is at the end of this post on board 2.

Zelda - The Legend of Link (v1.2 BETA) released!

http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=7308&page=1

I just my hands on the .ips and all I can say is WOW!!!   :whoa:

You can see exactly how amazing this hack is in the first 30 seconds, just let the title intro run.  Then after your jaw drops hit start and dive into by my opinion the most amazing Zelda hack ever made (trust me you'll agree)!!!

EDIT: According to his thread this is a near final release.....  Just testing for bugs, all planned hacks are already implemented.

snarfblam

Trust me, there are pleasant surprises right up to the end.

Nikoshiba

Sorry but I applied the .ips patch on the rom "Legend of Zelda, The (PRG 0) (U)" and I have a grey screen with FCEUX... So do you know with wich rom it works (please) ?

snarfblam

From the original thread:
Quote
Will this work on...?
This game will NOT work on the N8 Everdrive, or PowerPak's. The N8 Everdrive uses 512kb PRG & CHR-ROM. I contacted the creator, but he wasn't interested in creating a revision to his product. PowerPak's are in the same boat. Loopy's MMC5 patch works on MMC5 games, but, my work is too large for it to handle.

The game has been tested on the following emulators
FCEUX PC - Latest Build
Nestopia PC - Latest Build
Nintendulator PC - Latest Build
Retroarch Using Nestopia Core Wii/WiiU - Latest Build
So make sure you are using an up to date version of FCEUX. If it doesn't work with PRG 0, try PRG 1. AFAIK, those are the only two proper versions, FDS aside.

Ok, so I've been playing through 4.0 and I'm completely stuck.  Here's where I'm at:
Beat dungeons 1-3
Got one item in each dungeon (glove, feather, flippers)
Found the boots, red lantern, and bottle.
Got the sword from atop the mountain.

I've cleared out all but the upper left mountain on the map (don't have hammer)

I can't get in the castle, "Error" I assume is supposed to do something but I'm at a loss, I've been wondering around and can't seem to figure it out.
When I made it to the castle bridge, I was granted passage right away.

I think it was because...
I entered a room with a guy that said "Show this to my brother," and acquired a blue scroll item in said room.  I don't remember exactly where the room is... but I think it was in one of the uncharted corners of the Lvl 2 or Lvl 3 dungeon.  I think it was a "walk through the wall" type deal, not a bombable wall. I think I was clued by an unexpected dead-end.
Hope that helps until someone comes in with a more concrete answer or clue

Grimlock

Thanks for the tip.  I'll check in those areas.

altoiddealer

I also might have found that guy...
...from the OW.
 :nuhuh:
Even though I just found the guy/scroll like 3 days ago, my memory is just a bit fuzzy.
I know for certain, though, I got this scroll before I started exploring the left half of the OW.
IF it was in a cave accessed from the OW, it was somewhere in the upper right corner.
altoiddealer

OK, I know where it is now so here's your clue:
LVL 1 castle.  Walk-through wall.  Keep an eye on your map.
WTF? Really?  That's one hell of an obscure place to put something so vital to the flow of the game...

EDIT: ok, got it.  Thanks

About the location and my rant on the over world layout:
My bad for not exploring all of the rooms shown on the map.  Although I think he should have put the letter either in dungeon 3 or used one of those dungeon entrances that used to connect to the dungeons that got scrubbed out of the game during it's development.  Actually through several hours of wondering around the over world I see some problems with the layout.  Specifically there are a lot of blockages that do nothing more than make the player take "the long way" around.  It's actually pretty frustrating.  Also it's painfully obvious that the over world was layed out for the additional dungeons that got axed towards the end of development.  Now you go through some trick series of passageways and exploration, finally reaching what appears to be a very significant structure only to receive some "its a secret to everyone" rubies, or even worse that same guy selling the lantern, shield and map... OR the money making game guy.  This hack is truly amazing, don't get me wrong, I just get the feeling infidelity got a bit burned out in the end, especially when he axed the dungeons and was faced with redesigning the over world.  Hopefully after a long break he'll find the energy to revisit the over world.  If he'd let me I'd do the honors, If he doesn't do it himself.  Bottom line, the over world suffers from some significant flow problems (IMO).
altoiddealer

Yeah, I could imagine it being a very annoying experience missing it the first time through.
