Super Metroid Life v1.0
by Nevyn193
Release date: Feb 20, 2011
nevyn193@hotmail.com

Author's description:
This is a complete Super Metroid hack that will hopefully be
fun to play and have a few surprises. In the begining many
areas are similar to the original but as I progressed as a
Super Metroid builder the quality of the rom-hack got better
and better.

The map is about the same size as the original (same amount
of rooms). Difficulty is set just a little higher so it's
audience is more towards casual players with some harder
parts for 100%.

There's something you should know first...

[spoiler=Everyone else will say this soon]

READ THE F*CKING RULES FIRST!!!

Else this topic will be locked soon!

Too many newbies simply ignore the rules of this forum. Suddenly they wonder why people are "spamming" their topics with posts like this.
This is not meant to be an offense, but something you should think about when joining a forum.
If you read the rules carefully, all your non-hacking related questions are answered.

Black Falcon: I'm not sure the omission of a few pictures is worthy of a 'F*cking', to be honest.  It appears to be a completed hack, which has been correctly labelled as [SM], and placed in the correct section of the forum - Completed Stuff.

Nevyn: For getting your hack online (as well as the pics), you could either try contacting one of the mods here, and they'll probably discuss file transers with you, or you can sign up somewhere online for some free storage, and just provide links in your post.  There're loads of places that you could use for your image hosting, but for files (as well as the pictures), a lot of people here use Dropbox.

You may also want to post an entry in the Petition thread, to get your hack on the actual 'hacks' page of the site.

Yeah I know, it's just the fact that people didn't read the rules first before doing anything that pisses me off somehow

Try to 7zip it to the smallest size you can, as the board will accept anything that range and below. If it's bigger than a megabyte, definitely throw me a PM. Beware, though, to check whether or not you've accidentally added a header or bank before ips creation as it will throw plenty of unneeded filler into that patch.

That "unneeded filler" is probably most of the original ROM, which would make it illegal to upload here anyway :P

But yeah, fire a PM to one of us admins and we will help you sort it out I guess.

- I lowered the m/sm/pb to 2/1/1 so the 100% item percentage
is only 55% when finishing the game. Is there a patch for the
item% and if not how difficult would it be to change?

any documentation on the workings of item % count?
Quote from: Kejardon
E70D,X: Offsets to measure
E717,X: Divisors for those offsets (E70D,X / E717,X = +% for total)
X ranges from 0 to 8, 5 total

E721,X: Bits to test 09A4 for
X ranges from 0 to 14, B total

E737,X: Bits to test 09A8 for
X ranges from 0 to 8, 5 total

At $8B:E70D are five 2-byte pointers:
Code:

In this order:
$09C4   (Health capacity)
$09D4   (Reserve capacity)
$09C8   (Missiles capacity)
$09CC   (SuperMissiles capacity)
$09D0   (Power Bombs capacity)

They're used as the numerators

At $8B:E717 are five 16-bit values:
Code:

In this order:
$0064   (Energy per tank)
$0064   (Reserve per tank)
$0005   (Missiles per tank)
$0005   (Super missiles per tank)
$0005   (Power bombs per tank)

They're used as the denominators

That fraction works out how many tanks of each item you have. The game then adds them all together and stores it to $12
In your case, change 05 00 at 5E71B to 02 00 [Missile]
change 05 00 at 5E71D to 01 00 [Super Missile]
change 05 00 at 5E71F to 01 00 [Power Bomb]

I just want to say, this is pretty fun so far.  I just started Maridia.  While there are places where this admittedly feels more like a half hack, other areas are reworked pretty extensively.  It's not at all hard, although a few places have been a little tricky.  I've found very little in the way of bugs and tiling errors.

It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's very much worth a download IMO.

MetroidMst

Are there any intentional heat runs or suitless Maridia?

DonnyDonovan

Heat runs:  [spoiler]Not the route I took.  No, I don't think so.[/spoiler]

Suitless Maridia:  [spoiler]Yes, some.  Although none of the required jumps were at all hard.[/spoiler]

Quietus

Finished.  4:45 with 98%.  Dang, just 2%. :stern:

Sonuds great, I may play it some day, but I am a bit busy making my own ROM-Hack, so it may be a month or two before I play it.

I just finished the hack, I put up my whole blind run on YouTube for anyone to watch for some entertainment. Overall, some issues stuck out, like tiling errors, long time between beam upgrades, rooms untouched. Overall though this was a very fun hack. Item order was completely out of whack, which is very cool. Had a really awesome room. (The Varia Suit room was amazing!) I hope to see more from you in the future.

Metaquarius

It took me forever to find out Tourian !

I was strongly disappointed with Norfair, full of useless paths and big zigzag rooms, this area was the least well-designed IMO. Because of this area, plus Tourian which was left untouched, I finished this hack with mixed feelings, fun and frustration at the same time.

Quietus

I az been practicing lots, people.

New completion:

Thanks, Nevyn!

JAM

It's really nice and interesting hack. I'm playing it now. Item order was surprising for me. Great foundation!

As for dark side:
Some tiles were misplaced.
And you should really know how to move and/or add save stations. You see, your map is changed, but these static save stations are limiting you.

Quietus

I didn't see much point in pointing out tiling errors at the moment, as they were everywhere.  The funniest one is after Ridley.  There's a ramping error, which sucks you into the wall for a permastuck. :heheh:

Riffman81

Overall, I enjoyed this hack. Finished at 5:23 with 100%... not the fastest time, but I took quite a bit of time exploring. There are a few things that bug me: Some tiles not being used correctly, and i felt some of the rooms could have been done a little better. Just my opinion though.  :^_^: There were also rooms/areas that really impressed me, and made it a very fun play. If any updates are made, I'll certainly give this one another go. This is a great start if you plan on making changes, but I think it's also good the way it is if you decide to move on to another project. Job well done.

X-tradyte

I beat it a long while ago, with 5 min under quietus, at 98%. then did another run and epicly failed, with 3:00 and something and 88%.

I enjoyed it Nevyn(193).

Gradually on my way to what seems to be Maridia now.
Great hack man. Having loads of fun playing this tonight.
I really like these kinds of hacks when they're done right.

edit: 4:24 / 100%

edit: made a map for this:

MetroidMst

You can shinespark to get that later in the hack. Much easier that way.

Quietus

I jumped to get it too.  In the run I made, it saved a lot of backtracking. :^_^:

Done! I have mixed feelings about this game (and I believe a few changes could be made to right most of what I find wrong personally, though it's of course your hack):

  • Exploration is awesome, rooms [that you did change] are amazing, I think you should go back and change the ones you left original. I got sucked into the atmosphere in the game (one of the things I look for in a hack, ding ding), but an original room and palette often bring me right back to the original.
  • Norfair was a bit of a let-down; Winding labyrinths of paths which made me have to press start a lot to look at the map to make sure I was heading the right way, Zig-Zagging rooms that pissed me off, Pointless rooms, and bad hints at the main items (and they also needed more of a lead-to to these rooms). SJ Room pissed me off, took me like 10 minutes just to figure it out.
  • Tons and tons of tiling errors, some less noticeable than others. A few BTS errors. 2 Permastucks I found.
  • First beam took ages to get, then you could grab the other 4 in almost no time. Varia and Gravity were kinda close together too, really.
  • A Lot of genius room designs in this game, I noted a few below.
  • Tourian was nigh impossible to find, I used DMan's map.
  • Grapple Beam was my weapon of choice. Most enemies were vulnerable in any given area. More of a bad thing I guess.

Really though, I loved this hack, all negative comments aside. Good level design, fantastic exploration, decent difficulty, powerups weren't cheaply placed, and no major bugs on a v1.0.

I made note of all of the Tile Errors, Permastucks, Interesting Rooms/Enemies/Palettes, etc through the game. Attached.
