For size, I like Bloodsonic's idea of average play time. In that way, it's not really so much size as investment, but it's a more accurate representation of the hack's scope, I should think. We've got plenty of topics already for hacks in which we can average together people's completion times and give the hack a rough figure - " about 2 hours" is much nicer than an arbitrary letter.

Lunaria

mmm yeah, "estimated play time" or something like that, it's possibly the best idea so far in regards to this.

Quote from: Bloodsonic on November 22, 2014, 07:28:14 PMNumbers and statistics aren't useful. Do we play hacks because they have the biggest playable area, or because they're fun? Hopefully the latter. Now, which measurement of a hack will help you determine if a hack is fun? a really big number, or a user review?
While I agree with most of what you said blood, I really can't agree with this part. Of course you can't measure how fun a hack would be based on size, but that was never really the point. And I don't see why it would be useless information to have an general idea on how long the experience you're currently looking at to download is going to be.

Quote from: BloodsonicSo in the end, what would the amount of scrolls really honestly tell you about the size, quality, and or length of a hack? Chances are, not as much as you guys are making it seem.

It's not about that for me. I just like knowing the pointless stats, because I'm a nerd. I started cataloging screens a few years ago but only covered a few of the major hacks. I might as well post that here, just because.

Fear - I can tell you the first digit is a 2 right now :D

Sure, you can ask me if it's all really accurate and if I verified every last room in SMILE to see if I missed rooms that weren't on the map, etc. But seriously, as has been mentioned by yourself, all it really boils down to is flavor text. It could be slightly misleading (AngryFireChozo feels like a smaller world than Eris because, well, it is. You can only take one of the two giant escape sequences at a time, and it's got tons of hidden areas most people would never find, etc.), but that goes away if you include your estimated playtime idea as well.

So I ask you, is flavor text bad or not?

Maybe I will try to help out for this issue regarding the hack page when I have some time later, and the ideas that are provided in here are quite interesting. But first, I would like to refer to some of the things that are mentioned here:

Some remarks on this statement:
"estimated play time" seems like a quantity that (partially heavily) depends on variables such as
size of a hack; opportunities to save progress/skill or knowledge of the corresponding player/difficulty of sequences within the hack; goal that a player has set for himself/herself for that hack/play style
[for example: Parameters of rules for the playthrough (Out of Bounds, GT-Code, glitches of certain kinds,...) or category that the player chooses (or doesn´t choose if one doesn´t care) for the playthrough (any%="just beat it", max% or exploration oriented,...); a priori information that the player had for a specific hack while/before doing that hack (blind playthrough or informations given by a forum/video/SMILE)]; method that is used in order to derive this estimated play time (averaging play times out while paying attention to those parameters); sufficient number of samples of playthroughs for the given hack (by that I mean: "Do there even exist playthroughs that can be referred to?") or otherwise such an estimate would probably mainly need to use approximations for a potential playthrough lenght given by someone judging (maybe via looking at a hack in SMILE) how much time the sequences would need, which can get complicated for non-linear hacks since then one would have to handle probabilities for route choices by the player.

Also, maybe this helps a little for obtaining estimated play times for hacks (since at least, that way one can obtain an upper bound for the necessary time that is required for beating a hack, since this "necessary" time (which is in principle the time of an optimal TAS) is at most as large as those in-game times). But I also have to note that these are only in-game times and not real-times (and in some hacks the in-game-clock is changed iirc). Additionally, those were all max% kinds of playthroughs, and I usually had to look up the whole layout of hacks in SMILE before even starting to play, and therefore, those can in general not be seen as
"blind" playthroughs at all:

***
Regarding SM hacks, this is my current status (using keyboard to play; w.r.t. my standard ruleset; I also have all movies for all of the corresponding playthroughs if there are some questions regarding this part)
[spoiler]

M. means that I (think that I) collected the maximal number of Items within the Hack [I usually search through every single room of a hack within SMILE and make maps on paper including the items, therefore I am extremely sure that most of these numbers can be trusted, since I do this procedure meticulously]
f. means that the Hack freezes in certain unusual situations
I.r. means that some Items respawn in the Hack
as. means that I saved the animals in the Hack (animals saved)
na. means that there are no animals in the Hack that could be saved (no animals)
ans. means that there are animals in the Hack but I could not save them (animals not saved)

Original - 1218

Actually, this number confuses me a little bit, since recently I was asked about the correct total number of in-game map-squares that can show up in the map (or the mini-map for Ceres, since for that part there does not exist an accessible map in the menu since the Start button will not work for those rooms, respectively) and will turn red
[by that I want to distinguish between the red squares (including elevator squares) and the squares that are still within the convex hull (which is a rectangle in every case) of the screens of a given room that are shown in SMILE, but will stay black even after entering them (even after a boss that could potentially be in that room is already dead, or: The room state changed, respecively). For example: There is one square in the Green Brinstar Fireflea room that can even be entered without any kinds of glitching at all but will not show up on the map. Another general case for examples would be those squares that can be entered via inbounds-X-Ray-Climb, which also stay black. But there do exist similarly behaving squares that can be entered with other "less major" kinds of glitching aswell.], since some people who tried speedruns of the "100%Map Completion" category at Deertier wanted to know about that. And my result after meticulous analysis was the following:
Ceres: 12; Crateria: 218; Brinstar: 247; Norfair: 361; Wrecked Ship: 69; Maridia: 276; Tourian: 78; which adds up to a total amount of exactly 1261 revealable map-squares, and hence one would already have 1261 > 1218. [Contradiction]
Other than that, one could also get an upper bound for the total number of screens for the original game by taking the sum over all existing/accessible rooms (and potentially all of their room-states) of the product r(room)*c(room), where r and c denote the number of screens within one row (or column respectively) for a given room.

and others want to categorise everything to death. :^_^:
Indeed, I´ll generally go for the Categorize-Quick-Kill ;)

Btw, size is a parameter for hacks that (provided given an/multiple appropriate definition(s) of "size") can be used to
a priori distinguish hacks, hence it at least CAN potentially be a useful quantity for (at least some) potential hack-players/newcomers, and in principle, by adding a "size" value, the information provided can only increase.
Simple as that (provided that the "true" size values are given, to not confuse people).

I can also think of a lot of different examples of situations for which a "size" value could help out (for example: If a given hack is said to be fun throughout all of its parts, and another hack is said to still be fun but not quite as fun as the first one, the size of both (as an approximation of the play time/"coefficient") could theoretically help out to choose the greater overall fun). Although, of course, since the process of gathering informations for hacks is still going on, the priority of obtaining such "size" values over obtaining other hack-characterizing values is to be discussed. But, in a situation where all of the informations for hacks were already given and where it would only have to be discussed which of those informations to provide, I would clearly put those size values in there instead of leaving them out.  q.e.d. ;)
Furthermore, I do not claim that "size" would be the parameter with largest weight w.r.t. distinguishing hacks, since it is all about fun or emotion-integrals, respectively.

Another sidenote: In order to create adapted (to the list of hacks) aswell as the right amount of size-values that shall distinguishe hacks (for example: micro, mini, half, full,...), it might make sense to gather all/most of the sizes of the hacks beforehand and then afterwards create adapted size names. For example:
Given the set of some small and some larger numbers, namely: {19, 23, 31, 37, and 97, 103, 107, 113} and then trying to gain 1 adapted "cut" that separates this set into two disjoint sets via the order relation "<" afterwards could give {19, 23, 31, 37} and {97, 103, 107, 113}, and within each set, the largest difference of two numbers is relatively small here ( 37-19=18, and 113-97=16). But if one chooses the "cutting line/plane" beforehand, for example using "100" since it is just a nice number, one would get {19, 23, 31, 37, 97} and {103, 107, 113} and then, the author of the hack that corresponds to "97" might want to be against that decision of handling his/her hack as a mini-hack (for example).

After some double checking it turns out I'd missed a big chunk of Norfair.
