Does this little room look like crap or not?

And new pallete for old tiles. Yay.

I'm loving it besides those pink mushrooms.  The green mushrooms look good though.  Perhaps having a darker red for the mushrooms?

And the top room looks fine to me

The aesthetics of the mechanics of that top red door in the second pic is astounding. It's a perfect example of aesthetic logic. Well done.

(edit)
Just a thought, and a bit unrealistic to pull off. But I was thinking more about those mechanics. Since that doorcap doesn't have its frame (which must be the original mechanics of a door), and only has those 2 gears on each side, it would be awesome if when that door opened, the 2 gears on each side flipped horizontally, like churning gears for the door cap to open. I have no idea what sort of asm or other tactics would be required to pull that off. I'm rambling..

(ANOTHER EDIT)
ok, since those are 2 tiles each, it would flip the little connectors to the door and wall, so never mind..

(Editx3)
Hmm.. well.. you'de have to make variations of the tile, with the same linking structure but reversed gears for the lower 2 squares of the 2x2 tile. Jathys did this code for me where enemies destroyed would then destroy tiles, with this logic (if applied to opening that door), it could bust those tiles, and in the BG you'de have the custom tiles of the reversed set, and just make it instantaneous. I'm thinking too much.

You will hate me. I actually have three other shroom colors, but they're for the other areas of this submap area.

The gear idea is actually quite possible when one is related to DSO, but I seriously doubt it will come about as there are other ASM stuff both of us want to get done first, and those will affect the gameplay and are far more important.

You could simply have some code that changes the level design, but that would require a slightly different door PLM...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu5Clbzx-Qo
Just showing a new area in my hack - a part of the Ancient Relics. The core concept is a ruiny plant area (obviously) like the Arboretum (Chozo Ruins) in Prime. With main focus on details, this area is accessable in the later beginning of the hack. The hacking progress itself is very slow because of college. (now at max. 4%)

Randomizing mushrooms?! Good god! :whoa:

Black Falcon: Your concept vid looks a lot more like Kraid from Metroid 1 as opposed to anything from Metroid Prime. I like it, though! Also, your spazer looks weird. o_O

The design is a bit compact but overal, good.
You need to use more tile variation though to make it look a bit more alive and not as boring. :/

squishy_ichigo

Black Falcon: GOD, that area is to die for. I love the direction you went with the palettes (expecially Samus) it gives it a certain flavor that I really enjoy.  You attention to detail is insane, comparable to Grime and DMan (sorry other kiddies, but these 3 are just masters :P)

The only real problem I see is the Norfair room you showed off. :/  I don't even want to talk about that room. ;_;

Quietus: Looks pretty good, but I agree with GK, it needs abit more tile variety, and with ZM, theres quite abit of that.

RealRed

oh my god a Zero mission hack. I think I'll do the community a favor and not jynx it.

personitis

BF: Amazing. I'm gonna agree with squishy's post on that one. And the Norfair looking area seems out of place.
Quietus: Like GK said, compact, simple, needs more variation. It also looks a tad bland but that may just be that area.

Apparently, details are all the rage in Metroid hacks.

Digital_Mantra

Black Falcon, words cannot describe how unbelievably detailed and appealing that area looks. I am entirely convinced while watching that video that I'm traversing old ruins overgrown with vegetation. The attention to detail exceeds anything I've ever done, and I look forward to absorbing myself in your world when the time comes. Bravo. You've captured the essence of detail in it's most refined form. I strongly feel that your hack will be the best one ever made.

QFT  That has to be be best usage of tiling I've ever seen.

A little tribute to my (as well as Metroidmst's) first attempt at a hack...

That looks like a well done hack. Link plz?

RealRed

Wow. And from what I know, this is dead. why not release it? It looks really badass. Quite the opposite of your screens, apparently they didn't do justice like this video did.

DSO

Besides being far from completable anyway, some rooms are broken, PLMs missing, etc. and would have to be fixed. Also, once you get through the stuff made during the latest restart the project experienced (the brown crateria and black brinstar, for example), the older stuff is simply not fun to play.
By not fun, I mean it makes finding Kraid in Golden Dawn seem easy. You go through maze after maze after maze, never knowing if you're going the right way or if you're missing something or anything. The only thing you do know is that you are horribly lost. Suddenly, you see something. It looks like the entrance to Kraid's room. The only problem is you're blocked by speed booster blocks and you, predictably, don't have it. When you try going back, you search a fairly big area and come to the conclusion that you are locked in, without speed booster, in an area you can't escape unless you have speed booster. You try bombing everything everywhere, to be (probably) greeted with no success. Angry at the general lack of speed booster to be found so you can fight Kraid and actually feel like you've finally progressed somewhere, when you reach another speed booster block obstacle, you smash your keyboard. This ends up causing Samus to jump and you realize she just jumped through a ceiling that had offered no hint of the hidden path it contains.

Upon following this hidden path, you find yourself going through another maze. Somehow, you manage to reach Kraid through it, but you end up pausing in the middle of the fight because you have to farm missiles (you missed charge because it's hidden worse than Kraid). Later, you come back and beat him, and find Speed Booster. Instead of making you happy, obtaining speed booster makes you snap. You searched for the item forever so you could use it to reach Kraid, but you end up fighting Kraid to get it. The only conclusion you can reach at this point is that all things are forever wrong and the cure is to toss the computer out the window.
So yeah, there's a lot of good stuff in it, but there's a lot more that'll need totally redone. Fixing everything would be a larger effort than just starting a new one from scratch, which is why the project is dead.

Technically it isn't dead. It will be going through another restart later when both of us have more concrete plans for the hack and when both of our new hacks are finished. (Which in itself will take a while yet and will show this amatuerish stuff in the video for what it is. Utter crap.)

Lunaria

Release it anyway, people might have some fun playing anyway! :P

personitis

@DSO: I once remember Drewseph saying, and I quote, "Games these days just seem to spoon feed players. They tell you where how to get from point A to B. With Redesign, I wanted the player to have to remember key monuments and explore." I mean yea, the example you said isn't so bad until you single out that if bombing/shooting everything didn't destroy or reveal any kind of block that there's a wall through area some where. Release it. Some people around here may enjoy the challenge. =)

DSO

I liked the menacing feel of all red, but I decided to make things easier on the eyes.

MetroidMst

YOU DECIDE! Now that I got it out I would like to know which of these BG's you'd rather see. I think I'll end up using both as I like both, but I want help deciding which one to go with for this room.

Why do the reddish parts look like they're drawn in front of the foreground?   :pwuh:

MetroidMst

That would be the wacky transparencies effect in the FX1 box. It is very interesting, but I decided to take it out of that room. It just makes the BG appear in front of layer 1 and makes it transparent so you can see behind it. It was too distracting in this room though so it went bye-bye.
