While I'm sure that cartridges may have appeared somewhere on the dodge, I'm fairly certain that the first Nintendo saw of Sonic was in Adventure 2 for the GameCube.

But Sonic 4 (released in 1997 or so) is the first game in where Sonic meets Mario. The main purpose of the game is to save Mario from the cage (in final level). And Sonic can use items and kick enemies!

So, since I'm in poetry mode, I wrote a short poem about Mario.  Anybody who's played the main games should get all of the references. :^_^:

[spoiler]It begins with 1-1,
and a Goomba undone.
A fire flower, a 1-Up –
the legend's begun!

As the first game ends,
he's joined by his friends.
A quick warp, a tossed veg –
the dream soon ends.

In game number three,
whistles he needs.
An airship, some P-Wings –
the princess soon freed.

He then grabs a cape,
helps Yoshi escape!
A ghost house, a back door –
the legend takes shape.

Some stars for the door,
and a red cap to soar.
A tail grab, a quick spin,
and Bowser's no more.
