General Hack Ideas

Possibly.  I guess it'd depend on how much was changing.  Some changes would probably make a cutscene feel like overkill, whereas a complete tileset change would make it more worthwhile.

DSO

I've done things like that where at one point in the room the screen shakes, if you run back you find that the door you entered had caved in, for one example.

Quietus

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I'm on about.  Some things are fine having you reenter a room from elsewhere, but sometimes the change happening within the room seem more fluid.

You can modify the room tilemap in ram to change the graphics and block type.
As long as the tiles are offscreen then their graphics will change.
It's possible to make the tile's graphics change when the tile is onscreen but I don't know how you'd update the vram for that.
You can change bts on the fly too.

I had the idea of shootable switches that changed colour when you shot them.

Could Super Metroid be re-coded to support 16+ channel S3Ms, even if it required a special emulator?

No. That is way beyond SNES hardware limitations.

Based on the context of your recent posts, S3M is a sound format? If so, I remembered having a somewhat similar conversation on IRC with others, so I dug through my logs and found this:

All the info that interests you should be in the links found in the description.

Just so you know, the excellent VLC player plays .umx files too, so use that if you prefer. :^_^:

If you want to add ridiculous gobs of high-quality music, using the MSU-1 is probably your best bet (see the video person701 posted). It's basically like your idea of a "hyper SNES", except IIRC some crazy people have implemented it as actual hardware. It wouldn't allow you to use any tracker music, but IIRC you could have up to 4 gigs of CD-quality music streams (completely uncompressed, but high-quality music nonetheless).

It should be noted that bsnes is the only emulator cabable of using MSU-1. (And apparently also higan, but I've never even heard of that one :heheh:)

RT-55J

Higan is essentially bsnes. It's made by the same guy and uses the same codebase. He changed the name mostly because he's since added emulation support for other systems. Nowadays, he uses the name bsnes to refer specifically to the emulator's snes emulation core (which is also shared by a couple other emulators used by the guys at TASVideos).

Zero One

Quote from: Kitsune_Phoenix on June 01, 2014, 02:10:13 AMIf it attaches to a surface, a blue light on it starts glowing and pressing item cancel while the item is selected will teleport you to it (and you'll pick it back up.)

If you try to fire more than one, it will just explode.

I like it, but it sounds awfully familiar :P

Quietus

That's what I thought of too.  I feel a telefragging TAS coming on... :^_^:

It's a Transplodecator then.

My name is WatsonSword. My head is filled with ideas, but unfortunately I'm no good at ASMing or working with SMILE. Though I have been told I'm an excellent beta tester, so I'd be more than happy to make use of myself there upon request.

For while, I've had an idea for a Super Metroid hack, tentatively named Super Mini Metroid—until I come up with something less retarded. I doubt my idea will ever really get anywhere, but I just thought I'd want to share it. This isn't a wish per say, just speculation.

The idea was to make Samus and the submap match their proportions in the original Metroid. This would require shrinking Samus from 3 to 2 tiles tall, and doors from 4 to 3 tiles tall. It would also involve making a far more compact HUD, perhaps with items only on either side, and without a black bar, giving one screen an extra two tiles of height. That would perfectly match the proportions of the original Metroid. I'm not sure how hard the ASMing would be on that one.

The HUD part I think would be easy because I've seen plenty of custom HUDs, one of them without even a black bar. In fact, I think there's even a patch code to get rid of it!

The problems lie in sprite-art and ASMing. My problem is, my crowning achievement in coding was creating a command line quadratic equation solver.

As for the sprite-art, the doors would have to be custom. But I initially thought that for Samus, you could just use the Fusion SA-X sprites, and for its missing poses, just alter the necessary Fusion Suit Samus sprites to match SA-X.

But there I ran into another problem. By the measurements of Metroid and Super Metroid, SA-X isn't 2 tiles tall. It's 2.5 tiles tall! So Samus would have to be custom as well.

Anywho, what I fantasized about was creating a Super Metroid hack where the map was more similar to the original Metroid, but only where the two maps overlap. There, the Metroid maps would take precedence over the Super Metroid maps. But it would be Super Metroid otherwise, and the original Tourian would still be wrecked, so it wouldn't actually be another Super Zero Mission.

Retroo

i came up with an idea never seen someone do this before..

A bts that sets an event when you touch it/land on it. sort of like super zero mission's beams in the pirate ship.

Didn't know it already was made... Edit: Screw attack for morph ball... maybe it's more like saw blades? it could break special blocks like the shaktool in maridia. if you have spring ball, you can jump and use it.
