Some special tiles not done. I wonder if it can be imported into SM?

Betatronic

If I can make a few suggestions...

The tileset suggests a colder region, so it could definitely help to provide a few items that involve the growth of ice. Perhaps pillars or icicles hanging from the ceiling. This could also include growths of frozen crystals like flowers rising off the ground, or perhaps more alien designs like so: http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large/ice-mushrooms-aaron-cortina.jpg

Currently, it's a monochromatic cave, and doesn't provide much visual interest. Another thing that might help are 'interior detail' tiles. These are the tiles usually used inside walls and floors that are inaccessible to samus during normal gameplay. It's a layer of detail below the actual walls and floor and usually includes stuff like piping, or texture for rock faces. Not only can you do extra textures, but you can include ice-growth shapes within them to help really sell the idea of coldness. Adding some blue hues into the tiles might help too.

Not bad work on it, otherwise.

The base structures give me more of a ZM feel, but yes this could be imported with a little work. I like the overhanging snow bits the most.

Also before MST says it, add bubbles!

^ To add on this, it could very well be imported, it would clash a bit with the graphical style in SM. It's also worth noting that your tiles aren't that space effective. There is a lot of variation here, which is good, but on the same time there is also very little variation compared to how much space it will take up. You can only keep so much graphics loaded on the SNES on the same time.

Physix

Can tiles in SM be flipped and rotated? Or just one of the two? Either one would get rid of a lot of duplicates.

I get the hanging icicles part, but I feel like white and shiny icicles would be out of place hanging from those darker ceiling tiles.

Lunaria

Please put your large images in bloody spoilers, or better yet, hotlink it?

Super metroid handles flipping in both manners, but not rotation AFAIK.

This is correct. You can flip horizontally, vertically, or both.

It's much more alive. Now I need icicles.

Wow, those little ice shards are rad. They definitive make it look better, good job

Kazuto

I agree about these standing out.  They look slightly... cartoony, compared to vanilla SM.  Though I don't say that with any negative implication: the graphical work is certainly nice.  It just makes me curious to see if you'll replace/modify the existing tilesets, as well.  ;)

Physix

I think it has more depth now. Just gonna shade in the rest of the icicles.

Quietus

All I can think is that Samus must be terrified of shinesparking in there.

It's better when my icicle tiles protrude from the ground just a tiny bit... Looks alright.
Also, I don't think Samus looks out of place here. The art styles aren't all that different.

Final version.

Physix

I was bored one day and said "we need Ceres graphical update" and then I did it I guess.

I'm running low on tile ideas tho. This isn't enough.

MollyAncalime

Almost reminds me of Rogue Dawn. You could probably pull ideas from the screenshots there or from Axiom Verge.

passarbye

Axiom Verge is a great place for ideas.
I know it's lower-res, but Environmental Station Alpha always did look very similar to metroid's style, just 8-bit.

You should add some snowy areas kind of like this:

M1 8-bit snow concept:

If possible make it so the player is partly sunk into the snow.  You could transition from icy cave areas to open snow fields.  Also a neat accent would be some small openings in the ceiling in some areas that allow piles of snow to develop across walkways.  Frozen bomb-able water graphics would be a neat touch, maybe having actual water underneath.  Have the player require an item to endure the icy water temperatures. You could also create some icebergs that are situated on top of the water in areas.... Lots of neat directions you could take this tile set.

Dark-SA-X

Grim your snow tiles reminds me of solar jetman tiles, nearly identicale and looking good.

Quote58

Um, only if by 'nearly identical' you mean, 'are both 8bit tilesets that have inclined plains', because otherwise they look nothing a like imo

Oh sure it doesn't, go play solar jetman sometime, best shoot em up before the nes era died out.
Grimlocks style and jagged shape of the rocks he has shown looks abit like solar jetman.
At the bottom of world 7 in solar jetman, it somewhat resembles that. :/

Grimlock

Yea, I figured that's what you meant, the form/over all shape.  It's a pretty unique game, I actually have it on cart.

Then maybe you should've, oh I don't know, shown pictures of the rooms that look so similar? You put the title screen, and one screenshot that looks like grims work only in that it has sharp inclines. Other than that they don't look similar. I'm sure the game has similar level design in places, but not everyone has the game so we have to go off of what you showed, and what you showed doesn't look like it

Zero One

Would you stop shitting yourself over this? I thought it was plainly obvious as to what Dark-SA-X meant. The resemblance is quite clear.
