ATTENTION EVERYONE! THIS HACK HAS BEEN MOVED BACK TO NESTROID, AS I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO HACK SUPER.

Quietus

OK, so from what I can make out, you tried to hack Super for all of 12 days. You'll need more dedication if you hope to complete a project, for any version of Metroid.

Meeptroid

No, I couldn't understand SMILE for the life of me, that's why. But, maybe the project will happen a bit quicker, but it will still look nice, don't worry.

PonchGaming

Have you made up your mind yet? If you change your mind again, I would guess zm. :bounce:

Meeptroid

Nah, its gonna stay NEStroid  :heheh:

PonchGaming

Well, if you need any testing, you can count on me. 85% or 90% of the time at least.

All the information you need to learn SMILE is already generously documented on the main site....

The way you're going about this seems all too familiar -- Most abandoned hacks have origins like this. Stop posting, plan your hack, sketch it all on paper, develop your vision, and write down your goals for the hack -- and then get to hacking. That's my sincere, humble advice.

mrrichard999

You thought about using dACE's MOTHER hack for a starting base?

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1988/

Meeptroid

Honestly, I have a spriter for future versions of the hack, but for now, Snarfblam is helping set me up with a few ASM patches, and I'm already gonna use Metroid+Saving and the Wall-Jumping patch, so, I'm pretty much set

Grimlock

If you can show me that you've thoroughly planned out your hack and are committed to completion I'd be willing to do some graphics for you.  Not necessarily a complete overhaul (overhauls need to be done before starting, at least how I do it) but I could make you some nice detail tiles to liven up your areas and add variety.  They can be added pretty much any time during development.  I think with the right accents the vanilla tiles could me made to look decent.

(The offer stands for anyone working on an M1 project that is A: thoroughly planned out and B: is dedicated to completion, after my current project t is complete I'm going to be focusing on graphics primarily (8-bit and starting in on 16-bit)).

Meeptroid

Well, Grimlock, I might take you up on your offer, just because, to put it bluntly, Idk if PK (who was going to be my spriter) would be able to implement it into the game (no offence PK, but how are we going to implement it if you only have a Kindle Fire to work with?), but I am planning on completing this hack, I'm just taking it kinda slow, but, I got snarf helping me with implementing wall-jump as an item and Long Beam from the start. The whole wall-jump thing is because the place where everything is happening is a tower-built space station. But I think if you could go under some themes that I might need, your hired. But I am planning on completing this, just take my word, I don't really have enough done of the game to show you yet.

Just remember, you need to show that you've planned your hack and that you're committed. I don't think Grimlock is going to just take your word for it.

Meeptroid

Don't worry biospark, I'm just taking it slowly, which is why I don't have alot of material to really prove my dedication yet. I do plan on completing this though. Snarf himself is even helping me out with some ASM coding for a few things, as I know nothing about coding. But yeah, Grimlock, there's a reason there isn't really a good way for me to explain my dedication.

If Snarf even helps half this much, you'll be well on your way. :^_^:

Meeptroid

Yeah, Snarf is helping me a bit :heheh:. But anyways, he's a good guy.

Grimlock

I wouldn't write off PK just yet, he appears to be pretty dedicated to making things happen with his tablet.  I don't know if he explained to you which tools he has access to but he does have Tile Layer on his tablet which runs under Dos Box.  He should be able to do any of the graphics you need, especially the sprites.  I'd help him get going cause I'd like to see him succeed, he's pretty ambitious about tablet based hacking and really that is admirable considering the challenges he's willing to face to make it happen.

Meeptroid

Yeah, but he really isn't too much into implementing it himself honestly, but, he was wondering if you could implement his graphics, so, I would say take him up on that offer, go ahead and PM him about it

MetroidMst

Inserting graphics is easy and you should learn how to. You were shown/told some things in IRC and promptly decided it was too tough, which if that was the case, I put the probability of this hack seeing the light of day at 0%. You really should learn the basic things like inserting graphics into a ROM, especially if you're expecting other people to make them all. At least have the ability to put in what someone makes for you.

Meeptroid

Hmm, maybe I will learn how to... And thanks for the advice Grim

Grimlock

Don't forget about the basic graphics editing tutorial I wrote up, I made it for you all just starting out:

http://forum.metroidconstruction.com/index.php/topic,3635.0.html

Watch the video I linked, it shows how to slide tiles from game to game.  Also, if he's using Tile Layer then he'll be working directly on the ROM itself so they'll already be there.

If you check the YouTube account that video is posted in you'll find several others geared toward basic NES editing.

Meeptroid

OK, well then, I will talk to PK about it, also, just a question, would NES roms edited in Tile Layer work in Tile Layer Pro with all of the sprites looking correct? I need to know that, but as long as I know that, him and me could work with this, and, while he might not be able to do a full tileset, he could do some nice stuff. Thanks for all the advice Grimlock, although, I might need your help with one area for the game... As your graphics skills are nice, and I need a well experienced spriter for the job, and you might just be the person I'm looking for on that spot of the game. If your interested in helping out, please PM me, as your help with that later on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Meeptroid

As far as I know, there is no 'Tile Layer', only 'Tile Layer Pro'. I believe Grim was just saving keep typing the 'Pro' part.

PKstarship

Tile Layer is a DOS program, and Tile Layer Pro is a program for Windows.

Quietus

OK, so for all intents and purposes, it'll be Tile Layer Pro that's used. Everything should display fine, since you're essentially just using multiple tools to edit the same thing - graphics.

Actually Tile Layer is an older dos based graphics editor:

Here's Tile Layer Pro (Windows based):
