Some of your favorite games?

I'm curious to see what kind of games the people of this forum like... besides Metroid games. Because Super Metroid (and any other Metroid game) would be too obvious. What are some of your favorite games that aren't Metroid?

Feel free to leave your two cents, I'm leaving mine.

I do like a lot of SNES games (Super Mario All Stars, Mario World, Zelda LTTP, Mario Paint just to name a few...) but I also like games on other systems... I really like LittleBigPlanet (I'm a sucker for level creators in case it wasn't obvious.) and WATCH_DOGS. I'm also into RPGs quite a bit, with my most recent one being Paper Mario 64 (definitely one of my favorite RPGs) and my absolute favorite being Ni no Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch. Please, SOMEBODY know what that game is because it's really good!

Well almost all of the time you'll catch me playing Metroid if I'm playing a video game, but I do play a few other things occasionally.

Sometimes I'll play Pokemon Emerald, which usually isn't my type of game, but when I get into it, it can be really fun, especially with a friend.  I also play one Zelda game, Twilight Princess; I think it is the best story in a video game that I have played, with Metroid Prime being close of course  :^_^:  I grew up playing this game called The Neverhood, and still love it.  It's a game full of puzzles where you explore a claymation world as the main character, Klaymen.  I also have two Spongebob games for the Gamecube that I used to play a lot, but not much anymore.  I will probably play them again sometime though.  There is also Super Mario Galaxy, another fantastic game.  Lastly, there's Namco Museum for the Gamecube, which is just plain fun!  All this is still like 3% of my video game time; I just love Metroid so much!

Quietus

Final Fantasy 7
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
Streets of Rage 2
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

There are probably others that I'm forgetting, but that'll do to start with. :^_^:

It's a great game, if you haven't already, you should get EO:IV! It pretty much expands on what III did right.

Also, I'm not going to list any games since I like so darn many, and I have a really hard time picking a few out as "better" or whatever.

thedopefish

I'll go ahead and list a handful that aren't metroid-related.

Master of Orion 2
The X-COM series
The StarCraft series
The Quake series
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Fallout series
The Homeworld series

I hated the 3DS EO games, EO4 took away from the simplicity the original DS games had and I felt like I wasn't playing the game I spent 40 dollars on. Yeah 3 had the sailing but it was completely optional, and exploring a bunch of smaller mazes as opposed to one giant one wasn't as engaging. EO Untold is even worse, they took out or changed so much of the original design philosophy that there is almost no point to it. Mainly I'm talking about how they added some plot elements to the 'classic' or whatever they called it mode that wasn't supposed to have a story, or the ability to warp to staircases. That and I just don't plain like the other classes as much. If I played EO4 first you'd bet that I'd have a different opinion on the series.

Lunaria

I tried EO1 first back when it came out, but I really couldn't get into it since the theme was rather weak (It felt very generic at the start), and it was very grindy. I got further in EO2 when that came out, I didn't drop it until somewhere near the end of the second stratum. I loved all the changes they made to it, and it really was a much better game.... BUT, it was still too grindy to keep my interest.

EO3, on the other hand, I did manage to get through and beat. Thematically it did a lot, and the plot was a bit more interesting even from the get go. (And while I like the music for all of the games, I do think EO3 had a much stronger soundtrack than the first two!) It was still very grindy, and I dropped the game several times before I got through it. What made me come back to this one was the more in-depth character customization, which is something that I'm a sucker for.

EO4 is pretty darn great if you ask me. It made changes in the right direction if you ask me. Less grinding, more interesting classes that all have something to do, slightly more in-depth and interesting plot while still not being in your face. I like all that stuff, however, I do agree with you partially. EO4 does not have much less dungeon space per say, "stratum" 1 through 4 all comes in around the same size as previous titles if you factor in the smaller dungeons too. It does, however, drop the ball quite hard with stratum 5, which was way too short. And while the bonus stratum is all full sized maps, it's still only three floors, so that could have been expanded on as well.

I do think EO4 is a great entry in the series, and it's certainly the one I have ended up replaying the most as it's such a joy to play. (And I have never come to a point where I have no quests and I feel the need to grind before progressing, which is something that happened a fair amount in EO3.)

EOU is garbage. There is only one way this title was meant to be played: In story mode. While the floors and FOE's are something I personally consider to be straight up upgrade from the original, the classes are terrible and uninteresting. And this is super evident when coming from EO3 and EO4. They tried to add in a system to make it more interesting with the grimoires, however, it's pretty terrible. The system is manageable in the J or US version of the game, which has two bugs that let you have a more decent chance with it all. One of those were fixed for the EU release though. I relied quite a bit on the one that wasn't fixed, and even so I didn't have a great time. I can't imagine how this would pan out if the bugs weren't there. :/

That's not to say EOU didn't make improvements though. It has the fastest walking and combat speed in the game, and it looks fairly nice. If played in story mode, it also has the most floors to explore out of them all. I agree that stuff like the floor jump is something that probably should not have been added, but I'm not sure if I agree on the plot stuff. EOU classic mode does not really have more plot than the one in EO3 from what I have seen.  ¯\_(`~`)_/¯

Anything besides Metroid?... Good gawd, I like so many Metroid games...

Terraria
Skyrim
Ocarina of Time
A Link to the Past
Warframe

My list is quite small when you take Metroid games out of it. :O_o:

I like lots of games, really.

I'll get the obvious out of the way first: Advance Wars. Nintendo's greatest strategy series ever. :)

Deus Ex is a favourite of mine. Pretty much got me into a whole bunch of PC gaming when I got a computer that was capable of PC gaming back in 2000.

Tyrian is an old school western SHMUP from 1995. Was fun without being all that pattern memorisation stuff that goes in the Japanese genre. And it was a blast to play 2 player.

Netstorm is a tower offence/rts game from 1995 as well. Play the crap out of it. Most of the game is strategically building bridges to your opponent's floating island and using your turrets to defeat the opponent's.

For a more modern thing, I am quite fond of Team Fortress 2, although I don't play it much after a good 700-ish hours since the game launched in the mid 00s.

I loved Tyrian. I remember the cool stealth ship, and the silly carrot ship that fired fruit. In the normal game I always used the laser weapon. :^_^:

A person who likes Metroid: Other M? You don't see that too often on this forum, unless you're trolling me.

Well, the thing about Other M is that it was actually made more with the Japanese fan-base in mind. The game was received much better in Japan and is seen as a bit of a cult classic. The cultural transition to the west was complete bogus.

In my opinion, Other M is an OK game, but not a very good Metroid game. I like the game-play and some of the plot points were kinda interesting (anyone figured out who the deleter was before the game ended besides me?) but yeah, I think next time, Sakamoto should stay as far away from Metroid as possible.

And of all the problems I had with Other M, the one that bothered me the most, and the one I'll never forgive Sakamoto for is not Samus' portrayal and how different it is from Super Metroid, (Samus as a cold, heartless murderer is just as inaccurate if you ask me) but rather... Well take a look at my profile picture and guess.

Anyway, can we not talk about Other M here? I don't want this thread to turn into a flame war.

Quietus

I'd agree that Other M was an OK game, but it would have been just as good without the Metroid name.

Good call on Mana. I love that game. My only gripe with it has always been that you stand no realistic chance of getting all your weapons to level 9.
