would it be possible to create a level system in Super Metroid?

I'm just asking cause I am curious if it could be done and how interesting it would be to be implemented in a hack.

Anyone got feedback regarding this?

The short answer is yes, it can be done. It'd be a lot of work, but pretty much anything is possible nowadays. As for usefulness, I'm not sure. Unless there was a hack that had some kind of replay value, then levelling would just feel like grind for the sake of grind.

I think it would be a cool system (if made right) for the original vanilla game. Especially if it had cool sprites popping up with "Leveling Up" text around Samus while toggling her blue suit for a second as a cool effect. The more you level up, more energy tanks. Would force speed runners to kill at least a handful of enemies to get the minimum tanks, but if you were a newcomer, or wanted 100%, you could focus more on destroying enemies.

People would probably farm certain rooms by entering / reentering though. Infinite respawn enemies would have to give min exp. Hmm, it could be done, but it'd be tough to think up a good system that could work with Super Metroid. Maybe it would need to be a complete hack in itself to work.

One of the things in my vast do-this-someday notebook is that you get stronger against certain enemy types the more of them you killed. So, say, if you spent a good amount of time farming kihunters in the early game, later varieties of kihunter would take less hits as Samus had gotten 'better' at fighting them.

What is NOT in my do-this-someday notebook is a leveling system with stats that affect your movement speed, defense and offense, and once you reach level 50, you can hold L+R+Item Cancel for 5 minutes, during this whole time the room you are in will shake and the shake amount will grow the closer to the end you get until finally you've triggered Super Samusiyan mode which makes Samus' helmet come off and her hair point straight upwards about 20 pixels and adds an animated 'lense flare' sprite on top of Samus and renders her invulnerable to all damage and her weapons are all incredibly souped up (missiles instantly kill every enemy in the room, supers kill every enemy in the room *and* every room that connects to the current one, powerbombs kill every enemy/boss on the submap, etc.) and there's also a constant cacophony of screaming while this is going on.

[spoiler]OR IS IT?!

I was actually thinking something along the lines and idea of what Crazy came up with.

no super saiyan mode at all.

My over all idea was that each level gain you get an E tank or half an E tank, maybe an increase to ammo (if to use the Hyper Metroid ammo system), and that one idea you gave DSO...

I was kinda also thinking the same thing and it would fit in quite well.

Attack power vs certain enemies would go up but to gain defense you have to take damage (is evil)

I do think that it would possibly have to be a hack of it's own where stronger types of the enemies are in the game later on.

I think Level Up! has a nice levelling up system.

I came. Thank you. =)

I demand that you never put that in your do-this-someday notebook. Instead, pull out your do-this-now notebook again & copy & paste us your next glorious, universe destroying idea.

Ok something else I would like to know if it would be possible with super metroid. Obviously just about all of us have seen what Metaquarius has done with the Spore Spawn fight in X-fusion. I'd like to know if it would be possible for the following (One of which is possible with some texture shading, another just a minor edit of code.)

1: Have spore spawn rise up from the ground instead of dropping down from the ceiling.
2: Spore Spawn fades into the darkness/background. (This one is possible with texture shading or whatever.)
3: Spore Spawn appears and something like scythes rip across the room from both sides.
4: (Name what you think would be cool to happen in a fight with Spore Spawn.)

The short answer is that anything is possible if you're willing to put in enough work.
