I don't think Drew ever said the hack would be easy. He said it'd be easyER than the original Redesign. Also If you go to the reviews page, it's difficulty is under "veteran." Just sayin'.

RealRed

Under 'Veteran' after people raged and it was changed from 'Beginner'.
You miss a lot of stuff on irc anyway.

QuoteIt IS one of the greatest super metroid hacks that exists. Redesign already was. The problem is simply in its false advertisin

IMHO -- Top Three

#1 - Super Zero Mission
#2 - Super Metroid Redesign (in either form).
#3 - Z-Factor

I'd say Metroid Redesign³ or Metroid Redesign: Axiom Verge Edition. =)

Quoteas opposed to Redesign's expert skill requirements

I don't consider my skillz anywhere even near the top 50% (based on how some of U guyz on youtube play -- tool assisted or otherwise, my jaw is usually pinned to the floor in awe of your greatness) .  SM redesiegn was the first SM hack I ever played, aftter a what, a 12 year hiatus from the original..???  I really don't think it requies any "expert"-type skillz at all, cuz I don't have any.  Trust me.   :O_o:   Yeah, if you want 100% of the items or want to complete the game in an hour... That's a different story.

I really think there's plenty for everyone here.

Nah.  After the amount of shit Elm and I gave him, it's going to be "Super Metroid Redesign: Axeil Edition: Elminster Edition" or "Super Metroid Redesign: Axeil Edition: Technomagus Edition"

I'm getting a Chksum: Fail when try to load up and the screen just stays black. I hear they are rather uncommon. I know it's not music to your ears drew....Should I delete this and re-download another? Seems like it could be a really good version of Redesign.

Go through the usual checks:

Try a different emulator.
Download a new ROM - Super Metroid (JU)[!].
Download the patch again.
Make sure you're using the correct patch for your ROM.  An unheadered patch needs an unheadered ROM (3,072KB - headered will be 3,073KB)
Try both hard patching with Lunar IPS (or whatever you use), and soft patching (both the patch and ROM with the same name in the same folder).

Hopefully that'll solve it. :^_^:

re: the difficulty. I was able to beat the original Redesign, but only with copious use of savestates. Axiel Edition, I was able to beat without savestates (save for one chokepoint). Overall, I would say that the operation was completed successfully.

Steel Sparkle

wow.. Taking a look at this.. It looks really cool.. Im gonna download it and try it tomorrow.. Especially after reading the positive results this baby has produced.. Im looking forward to trying this.

Quick question about a Maridia item. There's a super missile tank held by a Chozo at the top of a sandfall, but there are only two grippable tiles on the walls, and they don't get me quite high enough. Is there something in the room I've missed, or is the wall jump possible but pixel-perfect, or what?

Never mind, got it. The sandfall cancels space jumps, but if you time it right you still gain that last bit of height.

Nevermind. If I did sequence break, it was absolutely minor. Looks like there are two spots you can get the Super Missiles at with only bombs :)

Zeke

Heh heh heh.

Heh heh heh.

Another victim of Redesign's "sequence break". I found it years ago, only to discover it was well-known -- and since then I've watched others find it over and over again like clockwork. Sorry, Strokend.

Actually, I think Drew may even have included a little tribute in Axeil. Did you notice that the full "new upgrade" tune played both for that tank and for the one above Spore Spawn? I don't know if that's deliberate, but it's cute.

Drewseph

which tank did this tune supposedly play for?

btw, 1.5 is still in progress, many many changes to flow with the new express elevators.

Quietus

I think he's referring to the Super Missiles in the plant spike pit to the east of where you first enter Brinstar. They've been known as a sequence break for a long time.

Zeke

Yep, those are the ones. I'm still on 1.1, so it may have been changed since then.

Quietus

I doubt it. They've been there forever and a day. Drewseph even collected them in his TAS from 2006. Moving them now would be a travesty.

Drewseph

those should play the shorter chime music on pickup. not the full pickup song

Yeah, it's the unheadered ROM with the unheadered patch thing. It's not the Emu. I missed a few missile spots my first time through; like the one way over to the left wall in Crateria(not the obvious one). I also was stupid and missed getting the Varia Suit before entering Norfair, however, even though I thought it was stupid(though 1 could debate me there if they wanted) of me, at the same time I never thought I would have to use Super Missiles on weak foes during Hells Run, but whatever it takes to get through there. I love the Ibj thing in Brinstar. I liked how you changed the area before Kraid. I did have a little hard time getting the E Tank that connects the beginning of Crateria(almost the center of Crateria) ....to the point where Ibjing almost felt necessary even though there are side wall jump platforms. I don't know how you get over that huge bomb jump area(this place replaced the Ibj area in Norfair in Redesign) in Norfair. Also, I'm not sure how the game helps on where to go next! I'm about half-way through.

Steel Sparkle

Wow... that.. that was something..
Now i had fun with the game.. i have never played the normal Redesign because of how hard it is supposed to be... now i do have some mixed feelings on this game. Now for times sake im not gonna post all the things i dislike which isn't much honestly plus it has already been mentioned what needs to be fixed..My only real complaints are how weak you are in the game and how looooooong tourian is and how hard it is.The escape was fine and kinda fun actaully but that's just my opinion.
Zeke

I can't believe I spent nearly an hour determining that yes, the early super tank makes the short pickup noise, not the full tune. Guess I was misremembering. Of course, it would make more sense if whichever tank you got first played the full tune, but I get why that would be quite a bit harder to code. All well and good as long as you didn't pull a Phazon Elite on us, where something in the game only works with the "real" upgrade and not with expansions...

Next question! In Maridia, right outside a shortcut elevator to Norfair, there's a missile tank in plain sight, but inaccessible. Seems to be at the top of a sandfall, but nothing I've tried gets me in there. I've x-rayed everything for miles around. Can anyone give me a hint?

Smiley

If it's the tank I think it is, you
need to shinespark to it from below
Zeke

But that sandfall comes down through the ceiling. You can't go up one of those. I even tried with grapple swinging. You surely can't be suggesting that --

Goddammit, Drew. This is the most "why the hell would I even try that?" upgrade since Soup required speed boosting underwater without gravity.

MetroidPeter

 I figured it out by accident. I tried doing an areal horizontal shinespark and did a vertical one instead. Serendipity is a wonderful thing.

A Dummy

It's cool to see a cleaned up version of this. Honestly, I really enjoyed the original one, including the new physics. The only thing that had me stuck the first time was the lost cavern on my first playthrough, but when I started over some time later I was able to figure it out, the second thing was finding the last Chozo statue, where I had to look at a map that someone made and feel dumb for skimming over it's location. (The one on the left side of Norfair for reference.)

I did use some minor tool assistance like rewinds and savestates at certain points, but overall I tried to keep it as clean as possible.
