3D Model Suggestions!

I'd like to gather suggestions for simple models I could create. I want to do this to both learn various tools (3ds Max, Mudbox, Photoshop, Quixel Suite, UE4) and to develop a hopefully diverse and impressive portfolio. With any luck, I should end up with a series of models with good texturing (diffuse, AO, normal, specular, emissive) and, if required, a little rigging and animation. I'll be posting both the results and the models for people to freely use or modify as they see fit. Just, y'know, give credit.

This community has a group of members that work on one of the biggest mods for UT2004 (namely Ballistic Weapons) and they're expanding it right now. So you'd have some great luck there. You could just create some guns and such and then show them the work, and they'll most likely listen. :^_^:

That's the problem: decent weaponry is not something I can quite manage just yet. My Arm Cannon was very shoddy, so I'm not willing to submit weapons for that project. The aim of this is for me to improve as I go, so starting with something relatively simple (preferably more complex than a box) and eventually heading to stuff more complex, like weaponry with multiple moving parts.

Jiffy

I see. Well then my best recommendations would be something like an animal, or a household object. For example, a Cat, and a Fridge.

Quietus

It really depends how simple you mean.  How about one of the pipes from the 3D Mario games?  Or a fairly detailed metal crate - something like the third image down here.

I still make half-life multiplayer maps, if you're interested maybe you can make some 3d models for them.

Here's a couple I have on the back burner.  I'm going to finish them after I get my Metroid hack wrapped up:

I like the "rats" scale theme, I find it to be a lot of fun so I have several maps like that.  Here's the most recent one I have that's about 90% done.  I put it on the back burner when I started my Metroid hack:

"Startrek Rats 2015"  ("rats" implies the scale of the in game environment)

You could make a hand phaser which can be placed in the map, I could make it player usable.  (Would be a pretty awesome addition to the map)

"Gravity Sphere"  The concept was created by Creepitall, basically you play in a sphere, all the walls have repulsion fields and the player is catapulted across toward the opposite side when contact is made.  There is a variety of platforms you can walk on and surfaces you can attach to.  These screenshots are a little old, a few things have changed.  If you like you can make some asteroids or something to place outside the windows.

Let me know if you're interested.  I also plan on doing a haunted cemetery map next year, you could make some grave stones or other similar content (Bats, ghouls, that sort of thing).  I'm going to make it for my buddy Creepitall kind of as a show of appreciation, he has the longest running half-life server, also he has a long history in the Half-Life gaming community in general.

I'm definitely interested in the Half-Life stuff. With it being such an old engine, low-poly assets would be very much expected there. All I need to know is, does the Source engine accept .OBJ models and .PNG textures, and what kind of bone structure will the model require? I know UDK needs specific names for the bones, and you need to have at least a grip bone and a muzzle bone. No clue about Source.

MetroidMST: yeah, sure

I also finished a model for Lunaria!

It's a very basic radio with only a diffuse map, since it's only to be used as a prop piece. You can grab it here!

Grimlock

Basically the models would just be props, you wouldn't have to do any animations.  I would build the usability of the phaser out of entities. I'll see if I can get you a link with some details on model construction.  I can help you create the skin graphic when the time comes or atleast get you started with something you can modify to properly fit your geometry.  It'll probably be January before I start working on it again.

Which hand-phaser style? The old TNG disc-styled ones or the later TNG-forward ones that actually have a handle?

It would be the old classic style since the theme is a replica of the original series bridge.  I should probably record a video of the map so you can see it.  Really though the best way to see it is for me to send you the latest playlist build via email.  Of course you would have to have the game but it would actually work out pretty good since you'd be able to test the model in the map as you make changes.  Right now it's 9.99 for HL1 but you can also get the "half life 1 Anthology" set which comes with all the game add-ons such as opposing forces and blue shift for $14.99.  I'd recommend the Anthology because there is a lot of really good game mods that require the add-ons.  They also have sets that include Half Life 2, Portal 1 and 2, Left for dead 2 and such.  Half Life 2 also has some really good game mods available, totally free, you just need the game for the game engine.  If you don't already have "Steam" you'll need to install it and set up an account.

If you make some HL models and find you enjoy it I can hook you up with some other mappers you can collaborate with,I know a lot of people involved with HL 1 and HL 2 game content.

Grimlock: Slightly off-topic, but if you're into HL1 content, have their been any major single player episodes in recent years?  I played through a number of them back in the day, things like Azure Sheep, Case Closed, and, most notable, Poke 646.  I've occasionally checked through PlanetPhillip, but was just curious if there's anything major that I may have missed.  Same applies to Half Life 2, I guess.  I've never played any extra episodes for it, so any recommendations would be welcome. :^_^:

Happily, I've had HL1 for some time. Feel free to PM/email me the latest map build. You'd just have to tell me where to put it, and how I can open it up to edit it and dump the phaser in. Never played around with HL modding before, so I don't have much of an idea of where to start. You could also add me on Steam: zero_one101

Ok I found you in steam, you'll just have to accept me to your contact list.

The most recent beta is loaded on the >>Creepitall<< server (For play testing), I have admin control and can cycle it to the map.  You'll want to place all the files in the appropriate folders in advance though, downloading would take a while since he has the server set to slow download (maybe someday I'll talk him into changing that, it can bog the server down with a bunch of downloaders so he set it to slow).

Basically here's what you'll have to place in the appropriate location:
(This map has a TON of custom content)

Navigate to your halk-life/valve folder and you'll find the following folders:

That's a pretty good website for HL custom mods.  Have you tried "They hunger" for HL1?  You can install Sven Co-op and it'll come with the first two "They Hunger"s as part of the install.  Also if you have Opposing Forces and I believe even Blue shift you can set them up to play co-op.  I have Halfquake (there is three of them) but I haven't done much with them, you can try those ones.  For some quick fun you could try "Big Lolly" or "Christmas-life".  There is a sequel to the "Poke646" mod called "Poke646: Vendetta", if you liked the first one you'll like the second.

If you have HL2 you should get "No more room in hell" and "Cry of fear", both free.  The first one is Multiplayer and the second is single player.  both are available on steam.

The non steam provided stuff can be found at the following website (if not on PlanetPhillip):

http://www.moddb.com/

A few suggestions for you, I'll post a few more If I can think of any.

EDIT: there is also a HL1 remake for HL2 that is supposed to be really good:

Black Mesa Source:
http://www.blackmesasource.com/

It's one of the best out there for HL2

Quietus

Thanks, Grimlock.

Yes, I've done the They Hunger series, and I've also (only recently) done Black Mesa.  I'll take a look at Cry of Fear. :^_^:

If you're looking for single player only "No More Room In Hell" can be played single player, it's similar to Left 4 Dead but you don't have to have other players or Bots to play through the maps.  Most of them are objective based, your trying to get rescued (the objectives are random also which makes it fun).  They went more towards realism so it doesn't take much to kill you, also guns and weapons are scarce like you would expect in a real apocalyptic scenario.

(Sorry for the thread hijack Zero)
