Hello!   :^_^: I am new to these forums and game modding in general. However I am very interested in  doing it, and I am planning in staying as a permanent member  to the forums.  Thanks  in approximation  :yay:  :colonrightv:

Firstly, you can introduce yourself.

Next, assuming that you're looking to edit Super Metroid (most of us do), you can start with Person701's beginner guide here.  There are also lots of guides on how to do things in the Documents and Video sections.  Outside of that, you can always pester people on IRC.  You can find the details, along with links to our main sections, on the Main Site.

If you're just looking to play hacks, Google yourself "Super Metroid (JU) [!]", and head to the Hacks page.

Welcome, and enjoy your stay. :^_^:

In all honesty, the best way to start is just to open up SMILE, and start making rooms and breaking roms along the way. Most people start out with the Landing site, but this isn't really recommended, because it has multiple states and skyscrolling, which can cause confusion. A room like 7957D would be easier to learn with.

I'll link you SMILE 2.5, it's probably the best for a beginner.

If you have any questions, which you should, you can ask in the Engine-Works thread, or go the main site and click the mibbit IRC link and drop in and get to know us crazies.

But i guess no wi have somewhere to start on. I will definitely check out the guide and try to learn as much as possible. Like i said I am looking forward to being a permanent member, and once I learn a considerable amount of stuff I will try to collaborate with you guys.

Thank you as well. I was actually planning on starting with the landing site, but now that you tell me this i will definitely follow your advice.  As for smile i had downloaded it but I can't get it to open up the rom .  I tried ups IPS patching it but it wouldn't work. However i think this question should be addressed in another thread.  If I have any questions I will certainly ask you guys. Thanks. I will get to know you crazies haha

Well, if you want to stay, one thing that is frowned upon is double posting without adding anything to the topic.

For SMILE, you need to ensure you have the correct ROM.  The (E) version won't work, and you want to find a clean (this is what the [!] part represents), headerless ROM.  Once you open SMILE, you just select your ROM, then click the obvious, flashing drop-down button.

For patching, you can either use something like Lunar IPS to apply the patch directly, or 'soft patch', where you place both the ROM and the .ips file in the same folder, and with the same name (e.g. metroid3.smc and metroid3.ips), and the emulator will automatically apply it when you load the game.

Thanks. Tell you the truth I didn't know none of that stuff ( except perhaps the patching ) . But I really appreciate  your help. Like I said Im pretty new here so I didn't know  I couldn't do that . ( Even though I read over the list of crimes) . I just assumed that when double posting was mentioned it mean posting threads more than once. But no worrie sit won't happen again  :oh:  . I think Im going straight into SMILE to try what you just told me. Thanks .

  :colonrightv: I finally was able to get SMILE Working! I found out it just happened to be the version of SMILE I was using. Apparently the new one messes around with newer computer.

Now where can I go from here ?  :yay:

Smiley

Runtime error 76, I presume? All you needed to do was create a folder called "Plugins" inside the SMILE folder.

But since you already have SMILE up and running, you can now make a huge, amazing hack that will trump every single hack ever, even future ones. GO!

Retroo

you can start by learning how to use smile, if you get any problems just ask for help also there is tutorials to get you started with smile =) have fun!  :^_^:

Now, I don't often break out the stern emoticon, but, in this instance, I'm going to use it.  Brace yourself: :stern:

Then, you can start with your own thread from just two weeks ago, in which you asked the same thing, and were given lots of advice.
