In short: She wouldn't, and it sounds to me like your completely overthinking it. :O_o:

It's a game, and climbing ladders or using monkey bars was probably seen as an interesting game mechanic.  There is no 'more realistic setting' - it's just a game, and you're expected to suspend belief, and accept things as-is.  You could apply the 'more realistic' logic to almost any game, and you'd end up with the same result, in that things just wouldn't work or don't make sense.

fyi, fusion was originally going to have an item to allow you to walk up walls, just speaking of spiderball like gamebreaking things.

This thread makes me think of this:

Also, magnet inside the arm cannon. One just strong enough to hold her weight, but Samus can fight against the force of it because she's fuckin tough. Or maybe only the monkey bars are made of magnetic materials.

Show me one, and I'll believe you. :^_^:

Hawntah

She could be using her Grappling beam. It's not mentioned at all, so it's possible she still has it at the beginning of the game, kinda like the Long Beam.

Vismund Cygnus

It's the Flying Spaghetti Monster. His Noodly Appendage keeps her firmly grasped to the walls.

Plutia

Clearly she fucks the wall until it gives up and teleports her up.

Then why doesn't she use it normally? It would have made the game so much easier :P
Because Samus is a woman of honour. Grapple was seen as too overpowered in her eyes.

You're still overthinking this.  :heheh:

They had to modify the grapple blocks into monkey bars and ladders so that regular humans (BSL researchers) could use them as well. Unfortunately, that also meant standard grappling techniques did not work on them.

Either that, or the programmers were just lazy..

What the hell, I'll join the overthinking club.

Considering all the other crazy ways the suit changes shape, it's entirely possible that the arm cannon can either deploy a claw, or hollow out and slide or fold back on her forearm to quickly free her fingers without completely disassembling itself. Have you seen the shit that thing does in Prime? We already know the cannon can slide each of its parts every which way on a whim, and the front of the barrel can open pretty wide.

Working from the idea that it can do this, I don't think she's been put in any other situations we've seen where it's more advantageous or comfortable for her to have both hands free as opposed to one free hand and a readied cannon. And even if we have (e.g. inside the pirate escape ship in ZM), it could be a matter of creature comfort. Unless she absolutely must have another free hand, she probably prefers to keep the cannon out as a security blanket.

Depending on what canon you follow, the suit means a lot more to Samus than just protection, and she probably wants to remain in her default state and comfort zone whenever she can. Left hand free, cannon ready on the right arm. It's likely she grew up living like that, so using her right hand for things that are normally done with hands may seem really unnatural for her.

Or maybe you're underthinking it.. Seriously, how can you sleep at night not knowing how a fictional character climbs ladders in a video game?

Isn't that essentially what the grapple beam does?

Hehe, no, I meant I can't see it at all - it was blocked at work.  I found it elsewhere, and have now read it. :^_^:

Jiffy

Maybe Fusion is just too different and we should all just stop wondering these strange intellectual things.

Okay then, maybe she doesn't actually climb... could it be an illusion!?

Quietus

Yes, maybe she's just walking in place, and the world is moving around her.  Super Samus Monkey Ball. :holyf:

Jordan5

Just like the Planet Express in Futurama moves the whole universe around it, instead of moving itself.
