Greetings, fellow Metconstians!

We are going to be having a contest, tournament style! Each part of the tournament will consist of a mini-contest, lasting 2 weeks. After each contest, there will be 3 days during which everyone may vote for the winner. The contestants will recieve a number of points, according to how well they do and how they place in the votes. Extra bonus points may be rewarded for how well entries adhere to the rules for each contest.
After 5 mini-contests, the points will be tallied up for each contestant, and the winners will recieve a prize!
Hacking related, of course, as I don't want to be sending stuff all over the world.

There are 2 prizes as of this post:
First prize is a fully-functioning SpiderBall item for Super Metroid.
Second prize is the Tunnel Theme from Metroid II for Super Metroid, remastered using SM's instrument table.

Here are the rules:

  • Public patches and resources are allowed to be used.
  • Custom graphics / ASM / resources may be used.
  • Each mini-contest may or may not have it's own rules. If it does, then those rules will always supercede these ones if applicable.
  • Absolutely no time extensions! If you fail to submit your entry for each part of the tournament, too bad. You'll get the minimum number of points for that contest.
Entries can be submitted by PM to me on this forum. They may be submitted anonymously if you wish, and I'll leave your name out.

Tournament Contest 1
In this contest, you need to make a room at least 4 screens, using at least 3 different "styles" or "themes" of tiles in seperate sections.
For reference, a "theme" of tiles is one where a group of tiles look the same, but may have different orientations, size or shades.

Rules:

  • Doors do not count as a theme. Your room doesn't need to have doors either.
  • Grass and plants usually won't count, unless you build a large chunk out of them.
  • Small sections of CRE won't count unless they make up a large section of the room.
  • Different palettes in the same theme don't count, unless there are also obvious changes in how the room is built between those themes.
  • You may mix tilesets or use whatever custom graphics are available to you.
  • The room does not need to be practical in game.
  • You may not use a room from a released hack, even if you made it.
This room has 2 themes: Crateria rock tiles and coral tiles. Even though the coral and rock tiles are very similar, they count differently as they are seperated into chunks in the room. The CRE does not count as it is used so little as just a method for crossing the room, and contributes very little towards the design of the room.

This room has 3 themes: Green rocky blocks on the ceiling, sand along the bottom, and purple metal formations on the sides. The CRE counts here as it's used to build large sections of the room.

Tournament Contest 2
In this one, you need to make a hack. It's only a small hack though, and should be centered around one or more puzzles using a custom Spike enemy (made by Grime and myself a while ago, so some of you may already have experience with them).

Rules:

  • You may only use one room. No door transitions.
You may use and extra room as an ending room.
  • You must use the custom Spike enemy in your puzzles.
  • The hack should only take a few minutes to finish for the average player. Don't make it too hard!
  • You can use any and all ASM or custom GFX available to you.
  • You can choose what upgrades Samus may use / start with / collect.
  • Entries should be submitted as an unheadered IPS file.
An IPS patch has been provided which contains the Spike enemy, as well as some extra GFX replacing the Spike tile which may come in useful. You aren't required to use the patch, but it'll probably help, and can be found here. If you don't wish to use the IPS, the Spike enemy can be downloaded from here.

If you wish, you can change the base damage for a standard Spike tile block at $A0EB3 - 3C to ??. The enemy Spike damage can be changed through the DNA Editor as per usual with enemies.
The enemy header is $F7D3. You can manually enter it into the listbox in SMILE or RF, or use the GIF/Txt provided in the link above.
Special = 2000 (plus whatever flags you choose via SMILE)
Orientation / Tilemaps = 0000
Speed = XYZZ
X - Speed of X movement (can be negative)
Y - Speed of Y movement (can be negative)
ZZ - Delay when spike hits a wall before moving away again (pixels)
Speed2 = XXYY
XX - Distance spike can be moved by shooting (pixels)
YY - Pause timer when shot (frames)

Remember to add $F7D3 to the allowed list!

I'm in this. It'll be fun to enter as my first contest! :D

Lunaria

Yeah, uh, this is not going to work. Or rather, this is not going to work very well. Since, you know, this community is terrible at voting for stuff.

Scyzer

Eh. If the voting doesn't work then I'll just get a few people in IRC and make a judge committee sort of thing.

Or just share these things instead of making them prizes?
Metroid Construction, Sharing Resources.

Edit: Oh I get it, rebooting the recently stagnant RotW contest.

FullOfFail

So... uh, I noticed you said it doesn't have to be practical ingame, so I'm not sure if this is a screenshot type deal, or something we'd have to submit and let people view from within. That makes a big difference, because ingame I use alot of FX1 and I'd want the slopes and everything to be correct, even if not required.

Also, just to confirm, I can make more than 4 screens if I wish, right? 2 weeks is a pretty long time for 4 screens, so I'm assuming we can adjust as necessary.

Retroo

hmm im done with my room now! i have send it to you  Scyzer

Scyzer

Yeh, screenshots only for this one. Easy contest is easy.
You can have as many screens as you like, but it must be at least 4. When I say it doesn't need to be practical, I mean it doesn't matter if there's no way from one side to the other, or if it's cramped as hell, or spikes in stupid places.

Daltone

I think what fof was getting at and what im confused about was if it is in game screenshots or a smile room that is 4 scroll areas big?

also I will compete on the grounds that any prizes i win can be made completely public after i win them.

I think RotW is the best it's ever been.

on-topic, I'll enter this for lols.

Scyzer

Submitions for the contest will end in about 3 1/2 days everyone! (90 hours and 20 minutes from this post). I've gotten 2 entries in so far, which doesn't really make much of a contest, so hurry up and get hacking! :D

I won't vote because I entered, but I'll certainly post some criticisms:
I fail to see the third element of your room. The caves and coral-y stuff are obvious, but the small bit of grapple CRE stuff seems thrown in as a minor element. You've used Project Base's stuff well, but I think it'd be more interesting to see an original spin on something like this. Take away the PB tiles and it is pretty much standard Crateria.

I don't really like this palette. The green doesn't blend well with the brown, it just sticks out strangely (I will say you've paletted that well though). It's a shame because the room is quite good, but it's all so same-y with the colours that it's a bit uninteresting.

Damn, you should make rooms more often. Everything about this is cool. Those nice long 22.5 degree slopes really add to the room, and your layering is great. That Red Brinstar bit sticks out like a sore thumb though.

The CRE looks like it's been put in this room as an afterthought. Additionally the palette on the Maridian tiles could use some work, it's a bit too bright and the filler green bit is too. The sandy part is well done though, props for that.

Had I not quickly thrown this room together, I would've tried tweaking the palette on the background bricks a little more. Overall I'm fairly happy with how this turned out.
Quietus

If none of us entrants are voting, then we'll need a fair few others to vote, as we'll be five votes down.  We also can't view the results, since we didn't vote.  Ooh, suspense! :^_^:

Vismund: I did think it may stick out a bit, but I always like the idea of more flowing transitions, so in this room it'd have mostly Crateria with bits of Brinstar showing, then in the adjoining room it'd have remnants of Crateria left before becoming fully Brinstar.  I feel it helps to make room transitions less jarring.  Besides, I'm just glad that I actually managed to finish a room!

FullOfFail

My room definitely didnt turn out how I imagined it in my mind. I always wanted to see Touran with a few rock tiles, but instead I ended up making Crateria with a few Touran tiles. The pipes were suppose to have that rusted feel as far as the palette goes, but they aren't damaged enough to really pull off the look I was going for. It's a alright little room, but I'll have to scrap the tileset to do what I really want.

Retroo

your room was the best i think =P fulloffail

Scyzer

Second contest is up in the original post! :D

FullOfFail

Can we use other enemies in the room aswell?

Quietus

When editing the speeds and stuff, does it affect all of them that we place, or can we assign individual speeds?  I'm guessing that may require duplicating the enemy?

FullOfFail

It's all individual, they work the same as regular enemies.

Quietus

Thanks.  That shows how much I've ever tinkered with enemies. :^_^:
