Info:
Welcome to Planet LV-388.
Heavily inspired by playing Metroid II Return of Samus the last few months and speedrunning SM,
this hack revolves around exploring temples within large caverns and lowering lava akin to M2.

Once an area is complete the acid will lower like in M2, so yes this is somewhat a linear hack.
Though with the amount of RTA strat skilled routes, you can achieve race run completion times.
Basically, you're a Temple Runner.

The style of this hack is nothing you should compare to my previous works. It's its own thing.
The design is simple and vanilla, without bolstering aesthetics or savestate challenges.
At most it simply pays homage to both M2 and M1 with SM style level design.

Temple Runner provides various skills and route mapping for speedrunners, however there are
easy paths for moderate players, it's just more time consuming in comparison. Temple Runner is
built around several factors: Casual Gameplay, SM physics challenges, any/low/100% speedruns.
Project scrapped. Guess I burnt out. Anyone got a light?

*Teleporting myself to 2014 to play this awesome hack

Btw, the hack promise to be really awesome. I hope to see more news about it in the following months :)

Always great to see a new project appear.  Keep us posted, DMan. :^_^:

Subscribed!  :bounce:  Looks really awesome!  Great concept for a SM hack, and I like the sound of the difficulty level.

Here's an example of what I mean.
This is Temple 1. (they will come in all shapes and sizes, this is just the pillar tower.)

As you can see, temple within a cavern like that ole M2 lushness.
If you look carefully, you'll see how this works for players of all skills.
You can walljump up the sides, or jump to each individual ledge.
You can Alcatraz out the right side, or wander back to the left.
Just wanted to put my goal with this hack into more perspective.

Lunaria

Looks nice, I'd complain about some simplicity, however, for a work inspired by metroid 2 that should be a style to strive for in this case.

I do have two recommendations:
1. Talk with that guy making the SM HD tiles thingies and convince him to let you use them for this. (Would be great as a first hack rather than vanilla to showcase it. and it would add to the charm of this thing I'd think!)
2. Don't stick with vanilla palettes too much. I know this is something I say a lot and with you I usually tell you to tune down the crazy rather than spice it up! :P
The only reason I keep nagging on about the vanilla palette is that it adds more if one makes a new one since it lays a coat of freshness and can add a whole lot more atmosphere to ones areas that is more in tune with the vision of it. And if a palette can take a creation closer to the authors vision than I think it's a tool one should use, especially considering how easy it is once you master colour theory!

FullOfFail

Looking forward to it. Will you be using the same palette/blocks for all temples? Take this with a grain of salt, but I think it'd be nice to find temples of multi-color, to compliment the different sizes. Kinda like what Zelda II had. It'd just give it more character. Even if you choose to use that same CRE block, you can still easily put another into the tileset and change it's color. Since SM II didnt have any real color, it shouldnt conflict much with the vision.

oh man, get rid of that green craterian tileset, it's getting fucking annoying. Or do what Crys said !  :bounce:

Where can I find this game?

Digital_Mantra

If I truly wanted to change palettes around and all that jazz to accommodate my vision of M2, there would be no BGs (except for those swampy vines in the caverns).
The SM gfx would be changed completely to M2 gfx, which I don't have time for, mostly cause I'm far too busy taming strange.

FullOfFail

Crys, it's tempting to link a "Super Metroid II" but I don't think one exists by that exact name, not in my archives anyway. Surprising, really.

More complicated than it needs to be, but this is the "alcatraz escape."

That's two people asking about Alcatraz within a few days.  It's infectious! :^_^:

Thank god you don't have to do a HBJ backdown hero shot kago machball charge skip ledge grab through Alcatraz with the pipe boots.  We'd be bombarded with questions! :whoa:

Hey, there's an idea...

On the topic of this hack though, it sounds like an awesome endeavour, and I'm sure you can pull it off, being DMan and all. It seems that open-ended hacks are going to be the in-thing for 2014, I can think of a couple in production at least.

Also, I think I must agree with this:

Don't stick with vanilla palettes too much
I think that if you're going for a lush look, like that of M2, you could easily afford to give some lovin' to the vanilla palettes. However, this is looking pretty sexy I must say. I look forward to seeing this come out, and hopefully convincing someone here to race me!

craighypheno

This sounds, absolutely beautiful.

Why can't it be 2014 already!?!?!?!

Sod Christmas - it's this hack that I can't wait for  :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Alright, bit of a new years update.

Started this in late October 2013.
I've made 92 rooms spanning several distinct regions so far.
I'd say progress is fast. Halfway done.

Don't forget to refer to my initial post, as that is what I update frequently.
Yes there will be proper pics soon and a video.

To quote one of my Beta-Testers:
"Man, you were drunk when you made this room."

Quietus

I was wondering what kept happening to your images.  I was thinking that anybody new coming along would wonder what the hell we were getting so worked up about. :yay:

Also, 92 rooms in about 10 weeks is some great progress.  Go, go, go!

Digital_Mantra

For those that haven't read the initial post, this hack is cancelled. Sorry guys.
I definitely have enough to work with if I ever wanted to pick it back up, and I would definitely use this for a reboot, but yeah its cancelled.
Sorry for even making a thread.

craighypheno

Awwwww that's a real shame
