Expanding available bytes in a room

I've been editing a room and once finishing layer 1 I'd used 421/462 bytes. I changed FX1 to use a layer 2 background instead of the pointer but as soon as i started editing layer 2 I'd used too many bytes, I was around 550 and had done about half of the room. Is there any way to expand the available bytes in a room? do you use a hex editor to repoint some free space? or will I just have to use the background pointer?

I've searched around and couldn't find anything in the forums but if there is a topic somewhere I apologise for making this one.

Thanks grime, your example happens to be the very room I'm using  :yay:

Haha, if only it were that quick to explain or create these things, Grime. :^_^:
