There's a video that was posted recently by one of the members of romhacking.net, which deals with pointers, changing them, and debugging as a means of finding things. It may be of interest to some people here, particularly if you're looking to move on from simply making hex changes that are already known.

It is possible (look at any zm tas or full stealth walkthrough), though I'm not sure on the specifics about skipping that pirate (unless that video's description explains it, but /effort. All I know, is skipping that pirate is very tricky/precise)

It is. I don't use TAS and i noticed it can be done when he is turning toward you. For some reason the Alarm won't instantly activate. Maybe that is the trick. At least that is how i did it.
