This is a WHAT IF story and is about Nicole Watterson Battling Mother brain.Nicole was turned on to the metroid series after stopping by laser video on the way home from getting presents on Chrsitmas Eve.
This is a simple hack.Basically, this is still super metroid.Just with a new character and story(could not change name in equipment screen).
I also changed the some of the area's looks and names.
The last thing changed was the story. This may be a simple hack but i still think it's worth playing.
i hope you enjoy this hack!

Firstly, welcome to MetConst.

Secondly, if you remove the dashes before your link, it'll work as an actual link, though it's better to attach it to your post.  There's an attach button at the bottom of the screen if you click the 'modify' button.

Thirdly, you'll need to provide us with some pictures to avoid the omnipotent banadminhammer. :^_^:

I seem to be having a room problem..Three rooms don't seem to work and when i enter them the screen goes black and nothing happens and it just stays there on a black screen...Any solutions? Is it my Emulator?Cuz it says there's nothing wrong with it..

Improving the formatting, grammar and spelling of your post may or may not appeal to the willingness of the forum members to assist you in any way you'd like them to :)

RekoningFang

Im sorry if this sounds stupid but what type of picture?

Zhs2

You know, screenshots of your hack. Just as stipulated at the top of this board or in the Recognized Forums Crimes as misdemeanor 11. Otherwise, I lock this topic if a reasonable time has passed without content being shown.

PNG IS GOD!

Also, upload it to imgur or tinypic, copy the BB code, paste it into your post.

Quietus

To expand slightly on the above, you'll need to register with a free image hosting service.  You then need to upload your images to that service.  The page will provide you with a link for forum use.  Copy the link.  Make your reply here (or modify one), and use img tags like so:
[img]http://www.yourimagehost.com/hackpic.png[/img]
(just type it in with the rest of your normal text)

Your pictures will then appear automatically. :^_^:

By the way..I had a better version of this hack where i moved the location of most the items and added extra tiles to make getting some of the items harder but, every time i loaded the hack up,the same three rooms kept freezing the game and i don't know how to fix this.
If anyone does and it's alllowed, i'll post the original IPS.

Malpercio

Posting an IPS is entirely allowed, and is, in fact, both the most common and the most advisable method.
You can't post a rom directly, because you didn't create everything in the rom - Nintendo has copyrights on Super Metroid, you know.
On the other hand, an IPS is only the differences between the original Super Metroid rom and your altered copy.

PNG isn't "god", but it is the best format you can use for screenshots. Please, don't use bmp. jpg is passable, but png is preferred.

No. Jpgs are worse for game screenshots because they cause artifacts in the images, unlike bmps.

If you don't know where to host the images, try Photobucket.

Zhs2

He gave us a patch (and thus the content required for us not to lock the topic outright,) but screenshots let people preview your work so they know whether they want to play it or not, so they are generally advisable. Down, Phazar, down.

I must say though that I am confused as to why two posts have patches and they are both slightly different sizes...

Phazar

One is a ZIP file, that may be a reason.  Unless you extracted it and it's still different.

Wow, what a blast from the past; It looks pretty much exactly like the brinstar palette in the old terrible hack known by few as ice.

Edit: also, no level design changes: wopee doo.

Ok, as someone who is also new to hacking, I'm going to give some advice. I will go into some detail, but I want it understood that I'm not trying to put you off, or be a jerk or anything. I am simply going to try and make you see how much work and commitment is needed.

I don't think there are many people who want to play the original layout of SM, in a hack. Everyone has played the original to death, and know it inside out. Changing the story, but not the game, is the same is playing through, but just imagining a different story. The whole point of a hack is that it's fresh and new, and should ideally give you that feeling of being lost on a desolate planet which you have to discover yourself (unless of course, the premise of the hack is to change something else fundamental within the game - examples of this are hacks such as Impossible, or Blackout). Also, remember when you first played SM? Remember those spots where you could not access something due to lack of certain upgrades (and if Super was your first Metroid game, you wouldn't even know what items would make access possible), but when you found that upgrade, you immediately started realising the places you could now get to? That was a joyous feeling, but I cannot obtain that again from the original, as I know where everything is. Or how about quite simply, getting lost, then after 20 minutes hunting around, you find your way again? I think these things are definitely worth thinking about when making a hack. The first time I re-experienced these feelings was when I played Super Zero Mission. Subsequently, craving these feelings like a drug, I continue to work my way through the full hacks. For me, I know that a full hack is going to take me hours and hours, I'm gonna exclaim "WOW" at new rad things, I'm gonna get lost, I'm gonna die, and probably shout obscenities at the screen from time to time. Myself, and many other players want to get lost in a new world and explore. I don't think too many players will want to go through original SM again, maybe with a couple of things tweaked. There is one such hack that does keep the original layout, Project Base by Grime, but it is a total makeover of the game. It's brilliant because all colours are changed, physics, boss AI, the lot. It works because it's not just a few colour changes and a different intro message. It has had a lot of work and effort put into it, despite the layout not changing.

I think perhaps you should have shown a couple of people first, before making the thread and posting it for download. Have you had your hack beta tested?

I started looking into SMILE and other neat programs a few months back. I started to come up with something, just winging it, it was a few rooms in Crateria. Of course, 9 or 10 rooms in, I decide I want to know if my stuff is any good. I showed one person, just one, and he bluntly and honestly told me what worked and what didn't. I didn't make a thread about it because I did not have any real content. Those first 9 or 10 rooms were the original layout, and I was point-blank told pretty much the 1st point I've iterated to you, regarding layout. Basically, what I'm trying to say in a polite way is that there isn't much to go on here really, it doesn't stand out. If you're going to make a hack, be prepared to spend lots of time. A few little edits isn't very impressive. Since starting I have been looking into things constantly, as I often spot something interesting in a hack I'm playing and think: How do I go about doing that? I would advise doing the same, take a look at what's currently out there, get some cool unique ideas. I have something small on the go again, about 7 rooms so far, which I'm not even happy with. I keep re-drafting and re-starting, because I keep learning something new and want it better from the get-go. Also, you should definitely look at our most recent release here on Metconst, Metaquarius' 'Z-Factor'. That project took 2 and a half years. Even so, a day or 2 later after posting the hack, there was an updated version posted due to certain things not being quite right - and that's a 2 and a half year project! So even with lots of time and effort it still won't be perfect! I'm currently going through it now and it's brilliant - but it wouldn't be if it was a half-arsed 3 week attempt.

Here is a link to a great article on starting to hack, and I will tell you that it is daunting how much there is. But don't be put off by that; make a point of telling yourself you are one step closer with each thing you learn and do. I'm still a noob, I still read the docs and this article and have to tell myself these things I'm telling you. To illustrate my points, I am going to attach my last attempt at something just to show you how much I still don't know! (I am not trying to self-promote - this really is ridiculously small and will take you 2 minutes to get the end of what I have done lol)

My small beginning, unheadered btw

If I sounded harsh at any point, sorry. But if you're serious about hacking SM (or any game for that matter), I think these points hold great relevance, and this is just the way I put it into prose!

If you don't know where to host the images, try Photobucket.

Don't tell him that. Everybody knows Photobucket needs to go die in a fire. It's the worst image host ever! Examples of good image hosts are:

imgur
tinypic
imageshack

Quote58

FlamingCobra, A) photo bucket isn't the /worst/ one out there, only for videos, and B) Dropbox is the best option, it's great for linking pictures and then you also have a whole bunch of cloud storage

Parabox

Still prefer Imgur. I mean, it was started only as a picture host and just as a picture host, one that experiences the minimum amount of downtime. The only thing they added was a little functionality (albums and such), but besides that, it is BUILT to take on images. Just my two Unix cents.

You think we really care about artifacts? What possible harm could a few artifacts really cause?
It's like posting .wav files; it's simply not done because it's just too big a file. Those of us who actually have to care about how much we download would rather have a compressed, if very slightly loss-prone, format, than an uncompressed but lossless format. Because of this, .jpg is in fact better than .bmp. However, .png is better still, and since mspaint can save in .png, there is absolutely no reason you can't use it.

I'm totally agree with Weterr123, almost two pages discussing about the little war between images hosters   :eyeroll:

For the hack in general, it needs clearly improvements, but let our new hacker the time to increase the quality of his work, and the originality. I recommand too the guide for beginners made by MetroidMst, it's excellent to discover what to expect from hacking work.
