Re-imagining Zelda 3: A Link to the past

Please forgive me if starting a new topic for this wasn't necessary... wasn't sure where to post. With the lack of Zelda 3 hacks out there, I was wondering if anyone had given thought to doing a Vanilla type hack? Like what is currently being done with Super Metroid: Project Base.

I loved Parallel Worlds, although I broke several game pads with that hack and drink more then my share of Mt. Dew! It still stands as the best Z3 hack in my opinion. However, I love the original game as well. I just feel it lacks depth and could vastly be improved. Just throwing this idea out there. I'm sure I'm not the first to want to see something like this done. Hell, I've even attempted to do this my self, but Hyrule Magic is kind of a pain to learn and I simply don't have enough knowledge to commit to the project. I've got plenty of idea's though, and would fully support this project if it ever comes to light. What do you guys think? Would a re-vision of this game be something you guys would want to see?

i would like to see something like this, but it would have to be more than just aesthetics.
(like project base)

maybe some modified dungeons or something idk. more than a re-color though.

I think that what Grime had in mind was the best idea: Project Base, as it is, is basically the framework of the fullhack he had in mind - physics, tweaks, palettes, other nifty things that seemed like a good idea at the time. It's easier for one person to get out a set of tweaks to make a more desirable experience of the vanilla game before they do the whole overhaul.

I probably wouldn't be able to contribute much to the project, if anything, but I'd love to see a rehashed Link to the Past. Lots of fond memories playing that game as a kid (Mrs. Grime is also excited about this idea). If it picks up momentum, it'd be fun to test things out and offer input though.

PB started out as the framework for other hacks (and it still is if anybody needs it to be), only I just started placing less focus on it being a starter kit and treated it like any other hack, minus touching the room layouts.

i would love to be a beta tester if this actually got anywhere.

@grime, you did nice work with PB. i loved it.
speed-runs ftw!

You should put up a message with a checklist of what's required, and see who can help with specific item redrawing, or Assembly hacks, music, character sprites etc

This is a good idea. I'll have to find time to sit down and mess with Hyrule Magic again. From what I've gathered, it's quite difficult to learn. I remember a year or so ago messing around with the editor and just finding it very confusing. But that could just be due to the fact that I had no serious project in mind, and lacked motivation. I'm not saying I'm going to bust out something great any time soon. But I'd love to contribute to this idea if anyone with more experience wants to run with it.

What I'm seeing with this idea is basically a re-work of the original material, keeping the overall layout of the original intact, but with new graphics, touched-up dialog, slightly increased difficulty, and some re-working of various palettes. I never did like the palette for the Dark World

Would also be cool to remix the soundtrack. I'm not sure how difficult that is, but I'm going to assume it's quite a difficult task. ASM is totally way out of my skill level. Most of the ASM being done on my Mega Man 2 hack is being handled by a friend over at the Japanese 2ch boards. I enjoyed the snow effects in Parallel Worlds, and thought it would be neat to change things up a bit with the opening of the game, instead of rain... snow?? Or make a cycle system within the game where the weather could change at various/random times while playing. I'm probably talking out of my ass with this stuff, but that's the basic idea of what I'd like to see. What idea's do you guys have?

I know there's a Day/Night system patch somewhere. It's probably definitely possible.

Is there a ROM map somewhere?

I thought I saw one years ago on Data Crystal I believe. Sadly it's not there any more....

MathOnNapkins is working on one, he knows more about this game than anyone I know, he's been hacking it since before metconst was around.

:^_^: This could be very useful. Most the info I'm finding around the net is basically random notes on dialog/text in the ROM. Oh, and of course a few vids on Hyrule Magic that I should probably watch sometime!

I have a WIP ROM and RAM map thats still being updated, if thats of any help. It's kind of a merged map of mine and MoN's. And I also have my "suprise" which I will release in the spring.

Your vision for this Z3 redo is pretty much along the same line of thinking I had/have for PB. One thing I always looked out for and still do, are ways of speeding things up, no matter how subtle. It all adds up. A slightly faster walking speed for Link might work well, for instance. A way to swordspin quicker, perhaps, like some special new input. Sky's the limit.
