Hey guys.  I'm doing my first play through with this and was trying to get this super missile.  I know you have to shinespark to get it but either you need to do it at a very precise way or something else that i'm just not seeing.  any help would be great!

Zeke

Sorry. I've never found another way to get that one besides the obvious: a painfully short speed boost.

Scyzer

That room is intentionally misleading. The right side of the room with the very obvious speedboosting ramp is a lie. It is almost impossible to charge a boost from there and get to the left side of the room to shinespark. The trick is to do a VERY short speed boost from the very left of the room. It's a hard item to get.

UFactions

Ah okay.  So it will take some trying then.  Anything I should keep in mind about the finesse of the very short speed boost?  I've never done one before and sounds like a fairly advanced maneuver. Wanna make sure i have the right idea before I try again.

Thanks you guys for the help. It's much appreciated!

Quietus

The key thing is to be pressing the run button when Samus's foot is just about to hit the floor.  You can see the frame (and read about the move) here.

Zephoras

Short boost took me awhile to get, try using the emu's slowdown to get it right the first few times

Well, I did a movieless speedrun, trying to see how close I could get to Hoandjzj's time of 1:27:18 with all items (101%) without actually doing a TAS, and this is the result:

I'd say that's a pretty decent job, even though I ran 80% of the game in 30 FPS (half speed) or less (as low as a tenth of full speed) and used a setting of 99 one-second rewind states in ZSNES. I must've used the rewind button at least 2500 times during my playthrough, which is saying something. I probably won't attempt to play this hack again for a while, primarily because the stress level the game put on me while attempting to get 'that one Tourian Missile expansion'.

You just described doing a TAS for your run. . . Just maybe not to the polished/tested/practiced level of some others, but that is clearly a TAS.

Quietus

Yup.  What da boss said.  Definitely a TAS. :^_^:

Okay, well... TAS or not, I beat Hoandjzj's record!

(I had nothing better to do, so I played MSZM, and got expansions in a slightly different order, resulting in a 10 minute time gap!)
DOH! Now I feel eerily stupid... And I thought I was going pretty fast, too! Now I officially will NEVER touch this hack again (nor attempt a TAS on ANY hack), for fear of embarassing myself. I have myself to thank for that (and Quietus for helping me see it for myself).

Expect me to only come back in 2021, when the 'Masterpiece' is complete.

Quietus

Hoandjzj's time is listed in real time.  The in-game time is 44:43, or [noembed]00:44[/noembed] by the game's clock. :^_^:

MetroidMst

Don't go away just because of that. Hoandizi has been TASing hacks for some years now, and has a lot of experience. It wouldn't be fair to compare your stuff to his right off the bat.

Quietus

Not to mention that yours was a casual TAS, using save states and slow-down, whereas Hoandjzj's was a full-on TAS, played one frame at a time for inhuman accuracy and control.  There's no reason to feel bad anyway, as it won't hurt to have another TASer, and you have to start somewhere.  I can't see that other TASers released an amazing, record-beating TAS on their first attempt.  Keep trying! :^_^:

Thanks, MetroidMst. I just felt wholly embarassed by how stupid I sounded. I feel better now. Thanks for the support! But in all honesty, I still won't touch MSZM again, at least not for the purpose of TASing. I probably won't TAS anything again, either, because I obviously don't have much patience for getting the 'best' time (I'm all burnt out on MSZM, possibly for good).

Quietus

Yeah, it's a big task, and it can take months to complete a TAS for a game like Super Metroid.  Imagine those TASers that take on the RPGs. :whoa:

Lady Aran

Hey guys! I'm on my second playthrough of MSZM; this time around I'm trying to get through the Pirate Ship undetected and get the power bombs and X Ray Scope early - the first time I played I got said items after getting the fully powered suit. At any rate, I was able to activate the lv 2 lock without tripping the laser and get through a bit of the ship undetected. I've reached a bit of a snag, however, and not sure how I'm supposed to get through this next area without tripping the laser. A screenshot of where I am is below (I circled the breakable block, in yellow):

I've tried everything I know how to do, including slowing the emulator down to about -4, but I keep tripping the damn laser. I'm hoping it doesn't require something like diagonal bomb jumping because I can't do it to save my ass. I can horizontal bomb jump, but only once. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

personitis

Sneaky little bastard of a block... My first though to break that without some ridiculous shenanigans would be to try the bomb spread (charge a shot, hold it, and go into morph ball) in different locations above the hole so that one bomb (hopefully) falls into place and blows it up. Just a thought though.

Quietus

I presume it's a bomb block?  If the above doesn't work, the only thing I can think of it to roll down to it, lay a bomb on the upper part of the block (still low enough to destroy it), unmorph (which should stop your fall temporarily), then press jump to start spinning again, then wall-jump back up.  Obviously, slow-down would help a lot.

Weterr123

I got past this bit, and got fairly far without being detected. I used savestates for this part, and it got to the point I could not find where to go. Disabled two of the locks in front of x-ray. I even managed to find my way to Chozodia from the ship, but alas, lasers everywhere. In the end, had to sack off the undetection route.

Quote58

Heh, ya I hated that block. I never thought to try the bomb spread, kinda wish I had since it took a lot of effort (though no slowdown) to get the walljump method quietus mentioned.

If this works I will sob. I spent like half a fucking hour trying to do the perfect jump there, eventually getting it, but if this works FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK my life

Lady Aran

@ person701 - I completely forgot about the bomb spread trick. Sounds like it may actually have a use yet!

It's done! finally, after a fucking hour and repeated loading of save states, I bombed the damn block! I had to slow down the emulator to something like -4 or -5 speed but damn it, I got it!

Seriously, I'll have to try that bomb spread trick on my next playthrough. If it works, Drevan Zero and I can cry together.

I use it quite a bit, whenever there are multiple bomb blocks.

Quietus

There's always one who has to fly in the face of the completely-forgot-about-that-move convention, isn't there? :heheh:
