Allright MetConst.
I bring you another great(?) indie flashgame. It's made by Terry Cavanagh and called VVVVVV.
You are a captain of a spaceship or something like that, something awful happens and you and 5 other crew members escape the ship through a portal. Naturally your character, Viridan, looks back to the portal he just came out of to check if the rest were there as well. Of course they weren't. Thusly, you set on a journey through a strange dimension in search of the rest of the crew whose names all start with V.

The game's design reminds one of Atari 2600 or Commodore 64 graphics, and the chiptunes that form the music are absolutely splendid. The gameplay is simple and challenging. Left moves you left, right moves you right and Z/V/Space flip you over, making you fall to the ceiling. You can't flip over in the air, forcing you to land on a surface if you want to go back. Folllowing this simple gameplay mechanic, puzzles and challenges are set up for you. Enter opens the menu in which you can view the map at most times, quicksave, and some other things.

World/Overworld is set up nicely, giving you a hub world, which is the dimension you accidentally into, and the 5 levels in which you rescue the crew members. There are portals all over the place, to which you can warp to from another portal if you've found them, making long distance travel quick and easy. You can freely go explore the overworld, as there isn't that much danger around, perhaps reminding one of a Metroid game.

You can also go and collect 20 trinkets if you're prepared to face extra hard puzzles, which will give you extras and probably a better ending.

All and all, this game feels like a mix of Commodore 64, Metroid, Portal and Paper Mario the Thousand Year door (the latter mainly being the music that plays on the X-Naut Fortress and the trinket get sound).

You might already have heard of Cavanagh, as he's made more indie flashgames such as Don't Look Back, inspired by the Orpheus and Eurydice legend, and many other greats. Check his stuff out sometime.

A demo version can be played here: VVVVVV Demo
If you want the full version of the game you need to buy it on the author's website. Or you could YARRRGH it.

Alright I finished the game yesterday. Got all the 20 trinkets, including Veni Vidi Vici and Prize for the Something. There are only pointless achievements left to do. Such as survive certain amounts of time in the Gravitron. Or finish the game on No Death mode.
Probably not gonna do that. Epic game. I'm gonna play some more games by this guy.
