Hello everyone!

I have finally gotten SMILE to work, and being a very avid illustrator, I decided to try SMILE.

I have been having trouble importing palettes in SABS and I generally dont understand why it is not accepting

my images which are in .bmp format

I use GIMP as an image editing program and I have been struggling to understand how to import pallets as i have tried
indexing to RGB color with 256 colors and making the image smaller.

I apologize in advance if this is a foolish question.

Thanks!

Format should not be bmp, it should be tpl or pal for palettes or gfx for graphics/images...But I believe Sabs don't accept gfx/image imports, only palettes...

Thanks for getting back.

What image editing software do you recommend i use to create Pl or pal files?

You'll want something like YY-CHR or Tile Layer Pro. The SNES does not work with file formats that you'd find on modern systems, so tools like Paint, GIMP or Photoshop won't work, though you can draw your tiles in GIMP, and I believe there is a way to paste them into Tile Layer Pro.

I'd suggest looking up guides on ROM graphics editing first.

To add to this, I'll explain the way I've found is best for it. Basically, TLP does have a way to paste from another source, but it's absolute shit. And by that I mean it has crashed every time I've tried to make use of it. Instead, there's a much better piece of software you should try out called Tile Molester. This program does everything TLP does but has the added benefit of being able to easily paste from even a .png. All you do is load of a gfx file with the palette you want, expand the box with shift+arrows iirc, and then go to 'paste from' and choose the image. Now, it will automatically fit the image to whatever palette you give it, using the closest matching colour to each pixel. That means you'll need a palette. For getting the palette from an image into the format you need, I suggest using SnesGFX. It's a program that does a bunch of neat things but most importantly you can give it a 16 colour image and it'll give you a palette in your preferred format, even allowing you to rearrange it and everything.

Now, I tend to use that method for ripping gfx from images, but if you were to lets say make your gfx in photoshop/gimp/paint, making sure your palette is 16 bit of course, then this is a way to quickly put it together in a way useable in the rom. However, if you just want some of the extra features of those other image programs, and don't need all of them, I suggest trying out Tile Molester for making your gfx as well. It gives you lots more tools than TLP, and isn't a clusterfuck like YY-CHR (though I know people who use it to make way the hell better looking stuff than me haha). So, lots of options are available!
