Classy title, I know.

What is this? Why it is Super Metroid with almost every single door removed! What makes this fun? Constant Speed Booster movement! Ability for new sequence breaks and runs (Missile only run, No bomb run, etc.) plus many other fun things to do on the planet we all know and love!

Two versions are included. One with many tweaks to make Samus have even more fun, and another with just the doors removed. Read the readme for more information... right here!

  No Doors

  Ver. 0.8

DESCRIPTION
=============

"Super Metroid - No Doors" is a hack I started about a week ago after needing a
break from my Beta hack. I have always dreamed of playing SM with no doors, as
I love the Speed Booster power up & always hated that doors would hinder my
free-flying fun (especially single-screen rooms!) Well no longer!

This patch will remove every door except...
==========================

- Boss Doors (Eye Door enemies removed, however)
- Boss killed event Doors (Door blocking Plasma, etc)
- Doors between Metroid rooms in Tourian
- Doors blocking you from re-entering Tourian
- Grey Doors that would ruin puzzles if removed
- Some Gates are still in place
- Powerbomb door right next to the first Powebomb pick-up
- Super Missile Door outside of Spore Spawn's exit
- Added Door leaving Screw Attack room, removed Gate

Other Changes Include...
==========================

- Gates Removed or Modified (All Super Missile Gates are now Missile Gates)
- Many Powerbomb or Super Missile blocks are replaced with Bomb/Shot blocks.
- Speed Booster blocks added to a limited amount of areas.
- Enemies vulnerabilities modified to allow a strange combinations of runs.
- Seperate Morphball added to the Wrecked Ship that disappears if you pickup
the default Morphball (and vice versa.)

The patch will also tweak many rooms to try & prevent perma-stuck situations...
==============================================================================

- Some Bomb blocks changed to Shot blocks with BTS of 04 so that they will not
re-appear, and vice-versa.
- Some Solid blocks changed into Bomb/Shot blocks.
- Some enemies modified to drop Powerbombs.

This patch will allow you to do some neat runs...
====================================================

- Missile & Bomb only
- Super Missile & Bomb only
- No Bomb (just Powerbomb and Missile/Super Missile)
(dangerous - Read "KNOWN BUGS" below)

(COMING SOON)
- Powerbomb only
- Beam & Bomb only

==============

2. Get a clean rom of Super Metroid ( JU ).
3. Get Lunar IPS
4. Apply the .ips file to the clean Super Metroid rom.

KNOWN BUGS
==============

* Perma-Stucks a-plenty! These are everywhere. If you attempt a no Bomb run,
you are in constant danger of becoming permanently stuck somewhere along the
way, even with all my attempts to save you!

- Any item that is hidden inside a wall (Shot block) is a chance for you to
get stuck. If you roll into the block before it reforms & have no Powerbombs
left, you are screwed.

- Many areas are built around the idea that the player must have bombs. I have
edited many, but some are just to difficult to change without huge rehauls.

- Getting the initial Powerbombs early can result in a semi-perma-stuck, as
it's the only room that has a spot that requires the morphball to escape that
you can access this early. Luckily, you are "perma"-stuck in spikes, so it
won't be for long! =]

* Shaktools room will not scroll unless a Powerbomb is detonated. I changed the
Powerbomb blocks into Shot blocks so that you can skip Powerbombs and still get
Spring Ball, but no screen-scroll is still saddening.

* If you enter Maridia through one of the three shortcuts, the tube won't be
broken, & Samus won't have water physics.

* Spikes don't do damage in the Wrecked Ship before state changes (although the
retail exhibits similar behavior in the WS spikes before defeating Phantoon)

* Zebes won't fully "Wake-up" unless you kill all of the Space Pirates in the
old Mother Brain hallway, yet will "Wake-up" later after some event (?).

* The Escape Sequence has the following "issues..."

- You can save during the escape, which if loaded up results in the Timer being
removed, and the Zebes exploding state to be permanently set.

- You can enter any room during the escape sequence, which looks out of place
since these rooms don't have alternate states for the exploding zebes effect.

- You can re-enter Tourian & fight Mother Brain an infinite amount of times.

Well I'm going to beat everyone to the punch on this. Changing one mere aspect in SM and calling it a hack with NOTHING else changed isn't really much of a hack. Not to be a jerk or discouraging, but that's everyone's consensus about it. A great example to site, look at Project Base. Not only does Grime modify just about every fucking palette in SM, he also remade original content with new rooms and new layouts, no rooms looked exactly alike. Now this game would be a great idea if say you took what you have now and took an approach like that towards it, you'd still have all the perks highlighted here, as well as the added advantage of creativity. Like I said, not trying to be a jerk or discouraging, but there's probably going to be another 8 posts either agreeing with me or pulling bits and pieces from each other pretty much saying stuff that's quite similar to what I am.

Grimlock

So no doors, does that mean no doors music?

I'll be looking forward to seeing some of your rooms entered into the room of the week contest.

Actually to be serious, I think it's worth doing, just to create a new angle on the original game.  I would call it a hack, why not.  You ARE changing the game right? I always questioned the bubble doors anyway, I mean why all the high tech bubble doors in the middle of a cave, the original designer has something in mind.  Anyway I ripped all the doors out in 3 out of 5 areas in my nestroid hack so I say go for it.  Blast the bubble doors into oblivion.  :grin:

It's actually pretty humorous how closely your title resembles Tobi's hack, I was confused for a second when I saw the name.  :lol:

CrAzY

Hmm, it's not supposed to be groundbreaking. It is just something I have wanted. searching for "Super Metroid no doors hack" in Google it resulted in it auto writing it, so it is desirable by some. I guess I should have said mini-hack or simple change. I am used to modding, & we call them mods. I just call rom hacks hacks no matter how big or small.

Don't take this as anything other than it is. Let the thread get lost to time but still searchable, & I can update a Dropbox account =P

Quietus

It may well be picked up by Google because a number of speedruns, particularly TASes, offer versions of the run with no door transitions or item fanfares. :^_^:

CrAzY

Good point.

Either way, I don't see any reason to be so uptight by a simple tiny hack. & pointing out other amazing full-blown hacks such as Project Base is a moot point, as this isn't meant to be anything other than no doors. As soon as I polish this up more, I plan to modify the terrain slightly so that the horizontal shinespark glides through rooms easier. That's it. My other hack is where my heart is, this was just something to pass the time, & when I was testing it out, I found it to be quite enjoyable speed boosting & mockballing across rooms.

So relax! The more content for SM, the better. Unless it's another damn spikey hard hack... (did I say that? =P)

Scooterboot9697

Well now. I give this hack a thumbs up for being one of the most interesting (half) hacks I've ever played. :^_^:

I actually hardly got any items, so my percentage should be lower; but I used the Golden Torizo debug code to make up for my missing items. Imo, I think that percentage is actually higher than it should be, even with using the code, but whatever. :neutral:

PS: My best time is usually 1:15 to 1:20, and I don't really consider myself a speedrunner. Having no doors to open really makes things go faster. I probably could've gone under an hour if I tried hard enough.

Lunaria

Except, what you removed were the hatches, not the doors! :^)

Is it possible to remove the tubes in SM and still maintain cycling to other rooms?  If so that would be a great direction to take this hack.  Make the caves and environment more natural without the high tech bubble doors.

I believe what warps you is an area in it, so yeah, it should be possible. I mean, the sandfalls don't have a tube, right?

Lunaria

Yeah, you can very easily remove the doors too, should you want too.
