Megaman Classic / X recreation side project

Starting a thread to show what I'm working on that I've had in mind for years and years, but finally feel motivated to do it.

I'm recreating classic Megaman music using the Megaman X instrument set as both a classic version styled after their games, and an arranged version truer to the Megaman X rock style. I'm using Modplug Tracker, closest music creator to the actual SNES' abilities, and trying my best to replicate the reverb/echo of the SNES with VST plugins (if anyone knows of an SNES sound VST plugin, please let me know).

Here's the first one I'm working on, a remake of Crash Man with X instruments as the classic version of the song. Still very much WIP, not much effects aside from note fades, except the guitar, which has nothing but notes so far. Still working out the chords and instruments and instrument echo tracks will come soon enough. Oh, and I apologize for mp3 kinda butchering the quality of the highs a bit, I was trying to cut down file size so it doesn't take anyone forever to DL it.

Crash Man MMX Classic WIP 2 (1.36Mb mp3, update 4-3-10)

I also plan to recreate Megaman X in 8 bit, and have made most of one song already. I'm using Famitracker to create those and will make them as actual NSF files if I can. What I currently have are 2 versions, one will be like classic Megaman with the plain NES sound chip, and another will be made using sound expansion chips to add more to the songs and make them even more kickass. The current expansion chip I was using was the Konami VC-6.

The VC-6 version was worked on a lot more than the original one, so it's got some effects on the guitar tracks and a better percussion end. Still needs worked on.

EDIT: Oh, and I did see a couple weeks ago that someone did something kinda like this, but not really... I forgot who it was, but I think they just took midis and used a MMX soundfont then made mp3 files. Mine are a complete remake of the songs.

Hey wow, that sounds sort of like what I did some time ago. Only better. Don't think I'll be of much help to you, but if you need any, I'll try. What'd be really awesome if we'd recreate Mega Man 2 with Mega Man X sprites as a whole game. That probably not gonna happen, but it sounds cool anyway.

All and all, the best of luck to you, and I hope you do a better job overal.

p.s. I can't wait 'till you release Wily's Castle First Stage.

Uploading a test file I did after figuring out how the composers did that awesome dual guitar sound they do that makes it sound like some badass reverb or something by having 2 guitrs at slightly off frequencies combine into 1 badass one.

Crashman MMX guitar test

The end is also been started in this, but it's barely been worked on... this is just a test of the guitar, mainly. I'm gonna have fun when I get the full on dual guitar chord and this dual guitar effect together in it.

After making a preliminary website to stick my junk up at, I started working on this again, wanting to make something I've had in my head for a month... well, mostly just one part from the middle to end is what I had in my head, thus it's the only part with any major work.

Bubble Man MMX Classic WIP (1.21Mb mp3)

Started this last night and got this far. This is with only 2 instruments, keep that in mind, so there's no bass in it at all right now.

EDIT: updated file after redoing the song speed settings so I could properly use the pitch shifting effects and set the right tempo value, added drums and altered some pan and volume settings... also updated the Crashman one and uploaded a barely started Flashman one.

Bubbleman MMX WIP 2 (1.14Mb mp3)
Crashman MMX WIP 3 (2.28Mb mp3)
Flashman MMX WIP (1.34Mb mp3) barely started

Sounds amazing already, can't wait for full.

Since I uploaded this for a friend, here's the latest Bubbleman one, with another guitar effect I figured out that the original composers used, added a couple more percussion and played with some other stuff...

Bubbleman MMX wip 3... or 4 (1.14Mb mp3)

Another file I'm working on as practice... wanted to try this before I did megaman 2 stuff. Shining Hotarunicus (Izzy Glow) of Megaman X5, Megaman X1 style:

what I just said it was

Working out instruments and notes, mostly done there, then adding and perfecting more effects, pans, volumes n stuff later, like the pitch bends and vibratos, and delays.

Oh, and I also had an updated bass test file for bubbleman, I guess.
