I would like SMART to be open source just as much as you do, but petitioning and posting a dump of it to github ain't the right way to do this chief

Wolfric

Humour me. Do you really envision the developers to think, after seeing this petition, "Y'know what, H A M is in the right. Let's release the source code now"? This would most likely achieve the opposite effect.

Delete this, please.

Did you... actually make a change.org for this? Are you that self-absorbed and entitled? What in the actual shit is wrong with you?

Firstly (and secondly and thirdly to help it sink in) - it is NOT illegal for free programs to be closed-source. Stop spreading that bullshit because it is not true. Anyone with any inkling of intelligence could do one Google search to see that it's not true. You seem to have this delusional idea that all free programs must be open-source, and are trying to use a non-existent law to get your own way, when in fact the only thing you are accomplishing is showing everyone here how much of an entitled brat you are.

Fourthly - Did you actually think this would work? Even if you got 50000 signatures, the SMART devs dont have to release anything. They are not a Government that is going to fold under peer pressure.

Lastly - if you simply must have an open-source SMART, then make your own. Start building your own editor and you can build it however you want. If you do a good job, then people will use it. If not, then it's probably for the best that you don't have anything to do with the development of SMART either.

THIS. The only thing I'll add to this is my own emphasis on the fact that if you so desperately need the source code from that program, that you can't even build a level editor, or even reverse engineer one like SMILE that IS open source, then again, you really don't need to be concerning yourself with this because it's obviously not something you're at a skill level to tackle.

Maybe instead of wasting time picketing or "petitioning" as you put it. (which she has a point about, that only works when your relying on voters or consumor favorability to keep you in a job), you could be working on developing such a thing, or learning how to. Or Maybe you can petiton Elon Musk to oay for it if you wanna pipe dream like that lmao.

or use the clean-room design

I mean this in love man, but the issue is more what a move like that woud do to TestRunner and Amoeba and the community at large that is actively benefiting from their work.

I could very well "fix" a hack or resource here but it would be disrespectful to do so without the original author's blessing. In this case, they've asked very explicitly to not do that.

Nobody could do anything to you if you went about it that way, but it definitely wouldn't get a warm reception in this community.

Not telling you how to live your life, but I think you have a real great thing going on lately with the ASM stuff you've been rolling out as well as the cool stuff you've shared on the Metconst Lost and Found. I'm trying to learn more ASM stuff myself and I enjoy seeing other people progress in that. Brand new territory for me at least.

This, I think is probably not the most fruitful route. It's just going to alienate the community.

But I would like very much to encourage your other work.

I agree with Omega, H A M has put out some cool ASM I've noticed that as well, so he's obviously got some potential as a Hacker, but he's right, underhanded hostile takeover crap like that tends to piss people off and ruin your standing with the community when you'd be another wise valued member. Physix was another good example. He put out some great stuff namely his MEngine that was almost an essential piece pf my Prime Engine, but he stole a bunch of stuff from Von Richter and Betatronic and got banned because he had an obsession with MSR388 to the same degree H A M seems to gave with SMART. It's not worth it bro.

Metaquarius

Don't bother with making SMART open source, true hackers know SMILE 2.5 is the real shit anyway.

Moehr

Better idea: make SMART close-sourced and charge a subscription fee, and then don't ever update it again but keep charging the fee.
