Why are metroid rom hackers so obsessed with the color blue?

Eris, the blue plague, escape 2, subzero, mintroid, deep freeze, lost world, mini, space junk, ice metal uninstall, etc..... like what is going on here? There was even an entire contest revolving around this color as if there weren't enough blue-colored mods already. Is there any rational explanation for the obsession with this color?

It's probably coincidence more than anything. A number of the hacks you listed have an ice or winter theme and ice is often depicted with cold colors like blue.
