Nintendo NES era and religious imagery

I was lead to believe that Nintendo basically "vetoed" games containing religious imagery on the US market.

Just so you understand, I'm not a particularly religious person and I'm not approaching this question from that angle, at all --

That said, look at games like Zelda or Castlevania or Solomons Key.

In the case of Zelda, link has shields adorned with crosses, and the graveyard area has tombstones with crosses.  Castlevania has crosses and Christian imagery *everywhere*.  Ghosts 'n Goblins you're throwing crosses, and Solomon's Key, that's a reference to a very occult philosophy based in esoteric Judaism (The Key of Solomon the King).

It seems they really didn't like "American" religious references but didn't have any particular problem with Japanese portrayals of Abrahamic religion in their games, so long as it came out of Asia vs. the US.

What do you think.

I was thinking about this even more -- Games like Wizards and Warriors, Dragon Warrior, etc. are based solidly in Arthurian Legend which are decidedly Christian in nature.

I think the studio which produced Wizards and Warriors was an American or British company though.
