I played it on my 5 year old lower-end laptop up until the chasing monster shows up, and I didn't notice any stutters.

Hey, I played up to the first boss, didn't notice any issues on my end.

I've struggled with optimizing various things in my project too. It was a bit difficult to figure out, but I've found the Profile feature is really helpful for things like that.

You might already be well familiar with the Profiler, but if not, feel free to hit me up on Discord and I can share a couple things I learned about using it! :^_^:

Hey all. I'm currently trying to find out why my game has random lag and stutters, and it would be nice if people tested this build for me. It's one room and I need to see if the lag is on you guys' ends as well as mine, of if it's entirely an issue on my end.

Quote from: alexman25 on November 13, 2024, 08:12:23 PMI am extremely interested! I always thought it could be really cool to see NEStroid lean more into its arcadiness; the other day I was even writing up my ideas for how a score system could work in Metroid

I will be watching this with great interest!

Thanks! It's definitely been challenging juggling the arcade aspect while still having it feel like Metroid. For instance flying zebs give you 100 points as they're easy one shot kills, but to keep you from farming them for points all day on smaller levels where Metroid X doesn't chase you ahead I just have to cut scoring off altogether, same for item rooms

Misc. Hacks and Games Development / Metroid X: Arcade style 2 play...
Last post by Eikon - November 13, 2024, 06:59:51 PM
Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster here. I am working on a complete rewrite of NES Metroid that aims to turn it into a fast paced, arcade style game, in the vein of a Bubble Bobble or Joust with randomized elements to keep things interesting. The main draw will be local 2 player split screen cooperative play. I will be updating this post as things progress, here are some details on the project so far!

Main Project Goal
-----------------------
Somehow take NES Metroid, an exploration heavy and back tracking based game and streamline it into a two player split screen arcade type experience that can be enjoyed in short bursts, with the object being to defeat mother brain and make the online high score list. I will attempt to keep as much of the classic Metroid feel alive as I can with hidden items, bomb tunnels, powerups, etc.

The Twist
-----------------------
As the name entails, X parasites have made their way to planet Zebeth, along with regular enemies you will find X infested enemies which are stronger and more difficult to defeat. Killing one of these enemies causes Samus' suit to absorb the parasite and allows her another charge of her 'X Beam.' Kill three infested enemies to fully charge your beam and open orange doors to progress to the next level. But stay too long in a single stage and a 'Metroid X Alert' will appear! It's best you make your way out of the stage as soon as possible or this X infested Metroid is sure to devour you..

Current version v0.25

Video of it running on a CRT for nostalgia's sake

Please let me know your thoughts on the project and I hope to build some excitement as I work towards release!

Completed Stuff / Metroid - Galactic Marine

METROID - GALACTIC MARINE
A HACK BY SRAROKZ (STAT!K)

Special thanks to the METCONST community for all your help, I stand on the shoulders of romhacking giants.

---STORY---

Galactic Federation outpost "Snowball" is a small outer rim ice-planet which contains a scientific research wing dedicated to examining the effects of the planet's extreme cold on the local fauna.
somewhere deep within the ice sheet is a facility of unknown origin.

Space Pirates have attacked the outpost and aim to locate the hidden facility to steal whatever may lie within.

You are a galactic Federation Marine and the only survivor of the Space Pirate attack. your mission is to locate and secure the research material.
The Hunter is busy on another mission and will not be providing assistance, pray she answers our distress calls before it's too late.

Remember Marine, you are not a Hunter.
You will need to use every tool at your disposal to stand a chance against the Space Pirates.

---NOTES---

NO special techniques are required to 100% this hack.

Walljumping is enabled but is never required.

You will die, saves and energy recharges are spaced regularly.

You may need to resupply in an area before you head deeper into the ice caves, think of this like a bonfire in other games.

This hack is 100% compatible with original hardware and is designed to be enjoyed without the use of savestates.

There are 38 items total to collect for 100%, item percentage at the end works as you would expect.

There are many routes through Snowball, beaten the game already? try for a low item%! how low can you go? (two mandatory items)
