Super Metroid as a Metroid Prime game

Assuming somebody is going for a 100% completion and will collect all items in the most logical/intuitive order, what changes would have to be made to Super Metroid for it to work as a Metroid Prime style game? Besides the 3D aspect, of course.

Kasel

Other then being converted completely to 3D graphics?

Aerosol

Yes, besides that. I thought that was understood, I'll edit the first post.

I mean more along the lines of changes to certain areas or certain weapons. The Spazer would probably be just about gone, and the Wave beam would lose it's "go through walls" properties, unless someone can think of good reasons for them not to.

Prime has much lower jumping than Super, and no walljumping, so the layout of the rooms would have to change drastically. Just look at the map, vertical depth to the maps in Prime is mostly achieved by elevator rooms. Some of Super Metroid's maps are as deep vertically as they are horizontally.

Aerosol

Well, certain rooms would be redesigned regardless to better take advantage of the new 3D setting anyway. I don't think walljumping is so important to the Super Metroid experience that it can't be omitted in a Prime-style remake. Prime has it's own methods of hiding things in out of reach places that work just fine.

Digital_Mantra

lots of stuff to shoot to draw bridges, etc.

Aerosol

Precisely. What about beams? Would beams be handled Prime style or Super Metroid style?

I created an account just to join this discussion!

Anyway, I think the Spazer could still be an option in that it greatly increases the area of the beam. Maybe the three beams could have some sort of "delta" formation?

As for the Wave Beam, I can see it being used in conjunction with the X-Ray Scope (use the Scope to see an enemy or other target behind a wall and the Wave Beam to shoot it.)

Just some ideas. I've always felt like the Prime series sacrificed a lot of what made the side-scrolling Metroids great, so discussion on how to creatively integrate classic power-ups into a 3D first-person Metroid (theoretical or not) is highly relevant to my interests.

Hiroshi Mishima

Just so you know, Wave Beam in Prime COULD still go through walls. Or did you forget that it was used for that purpose in several puzzles? I mean it isn't like we're expecting it to hit enemies 3 rooms away...

Aerosol

I suppose I did. But I never used the wave beam for anything else but puzzles in Prime (the electrical conduits, precisely).

Hiroshi Mishima

That's mainly cause the beams didn't stack and if you had Plasma it was pretty much the only thing you used unless you needed to freeze shit or fight the stupid Chozo ghosts. :p
