Share some cool metroid fangames!
Many have disappeared in the sands of time, overshadowed by AM2R, Planets, and the Prime 2D Demo.
Bit of a nostalgia trip. I spent a lot of time browsing metroid fangame communities in the late 00's. I really miss those times with so many people trying to give their own spin at Metroid games. RIP Metroid: Fan Mission.

ARBITRARY RULES
__
Quote1. SUBMISSIONS CANNOT BE GAMES PREVIOUSLY DMCA/C&D'd (NO another remake of metroid 2, NO prime limited to two dimensions)

2. Submissions must be FAN GAMES, NO MODS or ROM HACKS.

3. Submissions must include screenshots and a way to play the game in some way

4. You can post "I remember this thing from this one time <no screenshots no link> " tangents and "Wow / this is so cool / can't wait to play" posts but please DO NOT LET THIS BE YOUR WHOLE POST. Try and still add to the thread in some way beyond just that.

5. Self Promo is acceptable, but keep it to one post per project / fangame. Don't use posts in this thread as opportunities to talk about how x fangame compares to your project.

6. Discussion and reviews of these fangames are encouraged

To talk about an already submitted game, Hit the quote button in the top right of the game's forum post- this will change the subject of your reply to match the game.
Delete the quoted text from the submission before posting your reply.

To submit a new game, you may quote posts in this thread to use as a template.

Download Demo 1 (WebArchive)

Snags / Information
Demo 2 has a default.m_sav file that starts you in Norfair with some items.
This was done for Demo 1 players to immediately jump into the new content.
To undo this, simply delete default.m_sav before starting the game for the first time.

I'm pretty sure the hyper missile achievement does not work.

Demo 2 effectively replaces Demo 1 (but you get an achievement loading a Demo 1 save in Demo 2)

Moving thru some doors will generate error messages. Spam the [Ignore] button until they stop appearing.

Controls are configurable within the game.

Gamepads are supported.

There used to be online functionality for stat and achievement tracking
(Tied to metroid remix forum account) but it no longer works for obvious reasons.

Snags/Information

Recommend trying both 1.11 and 2.0.

1.x Demos play at an unusual ds-like resolution

1.x Demos slow down in fullscreen

1.x Demos - Pause and unpause will "crash" the game (error messages that cannot be dismissed)

Morph ball is faster than standing

Charge attacks can have unique effects

The suits are more 3-dimensional in terms of their behaviors, hence the suit-switching mechanic

There's this one old, old, OLD metroid fangame that seems to be unrecoverable. It had SM graphics, your ship crashes at the beginning, you explore some mostly CRE level design, and you end up fighting the super metroid at the end, grabbing a ship repair kit, and escaping. One of the items you get is mega bombs, which is just an upgrade to regular bombs of giant explosion sprites/hitbox because I think the fangame doesn't have powerbombs at all. "Old" here is a factor of "it recommended use of a Gravis gamepad". This is likely just a nostalgia post but if anyone could actually find it that'd be pretty cool.

It doesn't ring a bell, but if I find something like that I'll be sure to drop an @!

I encountered a crash, don't know how to reproduce

The minimap isn't always correct

Midair morphing can be used to sequence break or get some things easier

Talk to Ridley :)

Recommend setting 60FPS cap / monitor refresh rate.
If you dont it mostly doesn't matter, but the door transition animations are tied to framerate.

The file hash for M:FM version and MFGG version of Metroid Zero do not match.
M:FM version has a more recent date modified, but version number is the same.
It's possible, then, that M:FM version is the most recent build of the game, possibly the one you should play.

A short one, but a good one. Metroid Origins
By HackMi with Physix's MEngine
Copy-paste from the original release:
QuoteSet on an alternate reality (yes I'm a lazy story writer) where Metroid 2 hasn't happened yet. A researcher ship was instructed to take data from the planet SR-388. Within 2 days all communication is lost. Samus Aran is sent in to see what has happened to them, if there is a threat she must wipe it out.
The rest goes like Metroid 2, except it'll take you about 20 minutes to complete XD, I attempted to make it possible with minimum powerups for experienced players.
The game features:
3 Areas. 2 boss variations, original music (soon trust me lol), brand new game mechanics, a refined engine made in Game Maker Studio, overdetailed environments and lots of custom artwork.

Credits:
Hackmi, Physix, Martyn, Ocin, Shmegleskimo, VR, IE, Altair, FierceFalcoN...list goes on to be updated later
Gameplay footage since there was no trailer:

The music is really busted up at the main menu if you wait too long.

Be ready for ear rape from various sound effects, and bad music looping.

Charge beam SFX finish before it's actually ready to shoot. Wait for the third stage of the VFX instead.

Missile Firing Modes
Toggled mode: push CHANGE-MISSILE to toggle the selector on the next missile. Push DISARM-MISSILE to remove the selector. If the selector is placed on a missile in the head-up display, push SHOOT to shoot the selected missile. If the selector has been removed, the normal beam will be used.

Held mode: in order to shoot a missile, hold ARM-MISSILE then push SHOOT. If you push SHOOT while ARM-MISSILE is not held (or if the selector is placed on an empty missile), the normal beam will be used. The selector is orange if the missile is armed, green otherwise.

Direct mode: in order to shoot a missile, push SHOOT-MISSILE. The function SHOOT always shoots the normal beam.
