Changing HUD colors?

Hi folks,

How do I change the HUD colors in SMILE RF?  It looks to me like the HUD colors are tied to tiles in each map area?  Is this right?  Will changing HUD colors effect tiles of the world?

Yes, the HUD colors are inside of the tileset palette, meaning that if you want the HUD to be consistent no matter what tileset is loaded you will have to change the HUD colors in all tilesets.
Some colors are used by both the tileset and the HUD, for example the door tubes brown colors are also used by the HUD when an item on the HUD is deselected.

Please see this guide by PJBoy for more information on which colors are used for what. BG3 (the HUD/FX layer) only has access to a limited part of the palette space, the first 2 palette lines.

So if I change the colors, it could affect the appearance of some tiles in the world?

Yes. Feel free to experiment with it, just remember to make backups of your ROM. That guide I linked and this (https://metroidconstruction.com/SMMM/#palettes) should tell you pretty much all you need to know.
