Hi all, on behalf of speedrunner extraordinaire Oatsngoats...
A NEW SUPER METROID HACKING COMPETITION
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpyOk8hv8L4
Disclaimer: This contest is not affiliated with Metroid Construction, and is being organised, hosted, and generously funded by Oatsngoats. All specifications are subject to change without notice based on Oatsngoats' judgement.

Information and Rules:
General Theme:

  • Uninhabitable Planet
  • Casual Playtime should be 1-3 hours
    • Speedrun playtime (You could expect someone that knows all points of progression) should be around 30-60 minutes
  • Ideas for desirable genres may include the tags Exploration, and Challenge, but feel free to get creative.

Prize Money:

  • $3000 (Paid out in USD only through paypal) initially + added contributions from Oatsngoats' community.
    • 75% of the prize pool will be awarded to the winner of the contest.
    • 25% of the prize pool will be given to the romhack that is voted "community favourite".
Again, please note that this contest is being organised and funded by Oatsngoats, and this is subject to change without notice at Oatsngoats' judgement.

Rules:

  • All Creators must Sign up with the appropriate forms in order to be a part of the contest and to be eligible for the prize money.
  • All rom hacks must be complete-able.
  • No locked romhacks (must be opened in SMILE and examined).
  • All romhacks must generate an IPS file.
  • Do not Plagiarize (Inspiration from other romhacks is fine. No direct copies).
  • No NSFW content. No content that is offensive. No content that goes against twitch TOS.
  • One (1) entry per individual.
    • Working with and getting help from other creators is fine, however a creator can only be credited as an author of one entry.
      • If, for example, four individual creators submit a single entry, every author of that romhack would be forbidden from submitting a romhack from then on. Likewise, if one creator works on multiple romhacks, they may only submit one of these as an author.

Timeline:
There will be roughly six (6) months to create and submit your romhack.
The deadline for submissions will be announced at least one (1) month in advance.

So, if you wish to participate, join Oats' Super Metroid Romhacking Contest Discord, and sign up today! Best of luck to everyone working on an entry, and thanks again to Oatsngoats for hosting this contest.

Now, I'm aware many of the people joining this contest may be new to Super Metroid hacking, and romhacking in general; so (with some shameless plagiarism from Aran;Jaeger), here's a list of useful links, tutorials, and resources to help get you started:

A full list of patches, assembly, and useful resources can be found here, on Metroid Construction!
A massive list of resources can also be found in this topic.

The following list is a bunch of incredibly useful, finely curated patches for any hack (in this humble admin's opinion). Don't forget to credit anyone whose resources you use!

  • Skipping Ceres
    • Allows for the introduction text to be kept, while skipping Ceres station and playing the "fly to Zebes" cutscene
  • Instant Pickups
    • Skips item fanfare! Speedrun strats!
  • Spinjump Restart/Morphroll
    • Allows you to spinjump mid-air, and updates the animation for morphball so Samus only rolls while moving.
  • BF's Flexglows
    • You like when things glow? You need flexglows.
  • droprate+
    • Allows for enemies to have variable drop amounts, meaning you can make Geemers give you 600 energy.
  • Equipment Percentage Display
    • Adds a section to the equipment menu showing the total number of items collected. Immensely useful when you're trying to work out how many missile containers you have left to find.
  • Unrestricted Torizo
    • Makes Torizo only check for the room it is in, not the area, meaning they can be placed outside Crateria/Norfair.
  • List of Hex Tweaks on the Metroid Construction Wiki
    • Seriously, if there's anything you want, and it's hex tweakable, you'll find it here.
  • Ending Totals
    • Allows you to change the ending totals so that they add up to 100% no matter how many items you have. A lot of these patches are nice, but this is actually a must have.

This should be a pretty good starting point, and hopefully provide an exhaustive list of answers to any of your questions, but if not, feel free to drop your question in the Engine Works (or look to see if someone has asked the same thing!), or reach out at the Metroid Construction Discord.

Happy hacking, everyone!
