No, this isn't going to tell you the best SM, hack. I was just wanting to start a new topic where people can can list their opinion on which IS the best. Please, can you all tell me what your favorite hacks are?

Zhs2

This is actually better suited over here. *yoink*

As for best SM hack, I could not say. I personally liked Stardust, though - I have yet to complete Eris D:

Quietus

Some of the newer hacks will get a number of votes, but I still think that Redesign wins.  Size, quality of build, and the fact that it's now years old in comparison (as in what can be done now to then) make me think it still has yet to be topped.  Also, it's the only hack I still regularly run through, so that must say something.

personitis

Hmm, I can't say a whole lot. Didn't get to far into Eris, still haven't beat Redesign (shoot me <_<), actually completed Skree's Sigma Boss Rush, tried Pantheon, Cliffhanger I dropped... holy crap, I need to get on pace. Though the one's I've enjoied so far are Redesign and Eris. They're challenges, exactly what I like. =)

JamieWebb16

Let's see, I have beat eris, got pretty far on redesign, didn't get too far on cliffhanger..... basically, I have only beated eris. Sad

I gotta go with Eris. I just liked the artistic aspect of it. The ice Maridia was beautiful. However that's not to put Redesign down any, it was way ahead of it's time. It's basically Super Metroid part II. That phazon hack deserves an honorable mention too. But like Nu Zalem (Quietus) said, some of the WIP hacks are amazing. Ask me this same question in a year, probably will get a different answer.

DSO

Hacks beat:

AngryFireChozo
Limit
Legacy
Golden Dawn
Searching For Items
Eris
Cliffhanger
MockingBirdStation
Lunar Pull
Exia
Grand Prix
Grand Prix 2
Hangtime
Pantheon
Project Base
Revolution Ex
Ridley's Revenge
Stardust
Phazon
MDZ
Torture Hack
Precision

What is wrong with some of the posters in this thread? <_<

Plenty of solid hacks here, but Eris for sure. Nothing else here can best the visuals, the concepts of each room, the feel of the planet you're exploring.

But I share the feeling that a year from now Eris won't be king anymore. Something I'm doing my best to make sure happens (shameless plug)

MetroidMst

Searching For Items! How can you vote against it? Pure fun to get a bunch of items in a small hack. The difficulty isn't enough, but SFI wouldn't feel right with that. Fear is semi-based off of SFI too, which ups the coolness.

MockingBird Station is my second. Eris and Cliffhanger are somewhere around third.

But come this year's top hacks contest my tops will probably be changed, and after another year or two these hacks might not even be top ten, which means we've got a lot to look forward to.

Sorry Quietus, I must've got mixedup. I never can tell who's who.

Well I can honestly I've only played a handful of Super Metroid Hacks to completion as many just flat out annoyed or turned me off.

Redesign: I've gotten as far as just past Phantoon, but only with either heavy cheating or mass slow-down abuse. I did, however, watch my fiancee playing almost the entire thing and I've taken part in Silver and FirePhoenix's various LP recordings. I know the map is well designed and it's not a bad game. But that said, the physics made it damn near unplayable for me. No matter what I might actually like about it, if I can't play the damn thing there's little point.

Impossible: Well, yeah, it was impossible for me to beat it. Maybe I should try again some day, it's been a long time and I have a controller now so, yeah.

Eris: I've only played it for a few minutes, but I thought it was fun. I did watch my fiancee play almost all of it including the ending part, and I was impressed. It reminded me a bit of Redesign, only not with headache inducing frustration. I'd say it's one of the better hacks I've played.

Silver's Boss Rush games.. I've played them all, I believe, and Sigma Boss Rush was pretty damn good except for that bit towards the end that made me rage during my LP of it, which is up on YouTube if anyone's curious.

I've played a bit of Volta back when Fire still used to chat with me, and I liked what he'd gotten done. I have also played a few other unfinished hacks by Silver which're both pretty good. I'd say that whatever is good now may no longer be the best once Tierus is finished, but that's just me tooting Silver's horn.

EDIT: ..oh my that sounded wrong.

And in hindsight, maybe I should give some of the ones DSO mentioned a try. Silver sent me Stardust to try out and I'll probably start up that and see how it goes.

DSO

I would be interested to see what you think of AngryFireChozo, seeing as you have so much to say on the matter of physics... Stardust and Searching For Items are also good, fun choices for those who don't necessarily mockball in their sleep.

Hiroshi Mishima

Yeah, it's getting to the point where so few modern games truly interest me that I'm turning more and more to old games, be them remakes, hacks, or just the originals themselves. I think it's time to give some of the hacks I haven't tried a go, and maybe give some of the ones I didn't care a lot for another try.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll actually summon up the will to finish Redesign, but I get so tired of needing to turn on/of the moon jump code or fiddle with slow downs, so that may not be a plausible choice for next game to play. :p

I'm gonna give Stardust a whirl in a bit, and I'll look into AngryFireChozo. I can't remember when I last tried SearchingForItems, but I am familiar with it.

Xaggoth

I've played just about everything I could ever find and beaten nearly everything.  Redesign is actually an exception to that, for some reason I've never finished it even though I've tried to get into it multiple times.  So many of them blur together but some of my favorites are cliffhanger, stardust, angry fire chozo, hangtime and exia.

Digital_Mantra

Probably Redesign. While I enjoy many others (possibly more than Redesign), it just has such an official feel to it. It's flawless and the time spent on it really shows and stands the test of time. It's the grandfather hack of all SM hacks made and ones to come.

If only Silver had a finished ROMhack out, it'd probably have some of the best level design I've ever seen. Still, there's hoping Tierus will see the light of day before 2012. :p

EDIT: I apologize for having constantly gone on and on about Silver's hacks. Having not played anything by anyone else recently (save Redesign... and Eris (which I only played a little bit of)), I fell back on what I've played that I liked the best at the time.

Having played a few more ROMhacks, I gotta say that I've really enjoyed RedMonk3y's Super Metroid Phazon Hack. The level of detail he put into making tons of custom enemies, pause menu, tilesets and bosses just blew me away. I think it's more work than I've seen in any other ROMhack I've played at this point in time. Even edited the death animation and the title screen.

You guys know that:

"Super Metroid Redesign" (1st place)

But than i also love "Eris".
and "Super metroid Impossible" (Realy difficult^^)

Lunaria

Redesign is by far one of the best SM hacks out there, however, that does not mean it's for everyone.
For me, redesign is just boring and way too hard. (Maybe they go hand in hand?) Therefor, I can't say it's the best hack.

Eris is a great hack and I have played it to the end, but it also suffers from being too hard many times. :/

Therefor, I'm just going to have to say either Pantheon or darkness spreads 2.

X-tradyte

Personally I like Eris and Redesign but, my vote goes to....eh, hard to say.....mine goes to Revolution EX....that game was challenging

devonodev

Well.. I think redesign is the best, but it most certainly isn't my favourite.
I don't really know what's my favourite. I tend to enjoy short, and/or really hard hacks. SM Impossible and Cliffhanger are a couple of my favourites.. although, I can't remember if I ever ended up beating Cliffhanger.  There are also many 1 room hacks I've enjoyed alot.

Power Missile

To me, the best hacks are the ones with awesome ASM.  There isn't a whole lot out there.  The second would be level design and clever non-ASM ideas.  I don't really care about graphics that much, but I sure appreciate DM's artistic ability.  I guess Eris would get my vote for best hack, even though it isn't as big as Redesign (which I've always liked).

Someone mentioned SFI.  I've heard of SFI being real glitchy, and Firephoenix having to create a fix for it.  Although it made everything playable up to the Super Metroid, the real pet peeve for me is that Tourian was screwed up, and people still cannot get past the baby Metroid.  I don't like big bad bugs in games, so I created a new patch solving (almost) everything.  I don't think it would be a favorite if two people have to fix what the original creator broke.

Nevertheless, SFI even then is still the funnest hack I've played just due to the ridiculous nature of it. Really, just searching for items is the goal. The bosses and enemies are so weak and the pick-ups give you so much it just becomes a quest to seek out the next missile. Other hacks I've played have been great and for the most part entertaining, but nothing comes to the glee I got when playing SFI.

Ehh...  I'm glad then. :)  I do like it (well as soon as I fixed it) but it's a bit too short.

Cliffhanger was my favorite hack, hands down.

Okay...
I tried :
- Phazon Hack v0.2... But not finished... I'll have a shot on v0.3 until v0.4 comes out !
- Project Base 0.6 : I really like the idea of rejuvenating a classing. Not finished yet too...
- Super Zero Mission v2.3 : this one is huge ! Awesome ! Looks like a game wich could be officially released, perhaps too hard for a commercial outing but great game

I only finished Black Plague : I really love mini-hacks... A one or two hours challenge is perfect for me who have less time for playing than before. It reminded me of my love for SupMetroid and I began SZM v2.3 since that.

I want to play to :
- Digital Cube : the concept behind the hack is attractive
- Advent

I want to try Cliffanger and Eris 2012 but I'm afraid they'll need tricks I don't master... we'll see that...
