Super Junkoid - Widescreen Screenshot

Super Junkoid v1.3 looks gorgeous in widescreen.
Today was my day off and I spent the entire day working on the widescreen patch.
This game has so many graphical changes that it will take me some time to complete the widescreen patch.

RodBlanc

I'll be waiting to play it only when the widescreen patch comes out. Don't mind if takes a bit longer.
I'm sure the game will look amazing

It's a great hack. Despite familiarity it's even crossing "hack of sm" -> original game barrier.
I started playing knowing very little about the hack, only seen some development screenshots and it looked super cute.
Did I enjoy playing it? Yes. All of it.
Would I have played it if I knew genre/themes beforehand? No.
Do I want to keep thinking about some parts of it. No. Even tho I want and will replay it. Just focusing on mechanics.
Give this a try, and don't be afraid to stop, turn around and leave an area if it's making you feel uncomfortable. Maybe come back later, maybe just explore other places and quit the game unfinished.

NOTE: Newest version is on page 1 of the forum thread, v2.5 (Easy)

This hack was probably the most interesting one I've played. I played on v2.45 Easy because I didn't know what to expect in Normal or Hard.
I think people with some patience should give this hack a try/playthrough. It's definitely an interesting ride. I came out of this a different person.

Pros:
-The level design is decent for the most part
-Tons of areas to go, 8 total planets
-699 total rooms (on Hard)
-Hint room that gives the general area for your next major item
-Many items and puzzles
-Challenging, even on Easy Mode
-Ammo/hp pickups were increased (on Easy)
-Special morph ball item combo that works pretty great
-Custom HUD and new item names
-Custom bosses

Cons:
-The massive endgame door hunt
It's about 3 times as obnoxious on Normal or Hard because you have to find 24 of these stupid doors in stupid locations. But hey, at least there's a map.
-Some enemies hit like tanks
-Few permastucks (to be fair, you have to try hard to get stuck)
-A tight heat run, but that can be a plus if you like those
-Progression is extremely convoluted, stuff is hidden behind normal-looking walls and other awesome places
-Suitless underwater is prevalent
-Only one ammo per upgrade
-No bomb jumping or mockballing
-Obnoxious Maridia music
-Almost no sequence breaks, path is extremely linear
-Area names/item names are unpronounceable
-Only 9 e-tanks
-Insane amounts of farming

TL;DR: If you have some patience, give this hack a go. You might regret it but it's an interesting journey through and through.

A lot of the two games were reprogrammed, making it very difficult to make a widescreen patch compatible with this combo randomizer.
And obviously the free space was almost gone.

I can try to make a widescreen patch for this game, but I can't promise when. Right now I'm very busy, I have a lot of work in my real life and zero free time :(
I'm very spoiled, if it's not widescreen, I better not play anything related to Super Metroid.

I figured that might be the case, considering that are literally two games in one. Saw that Alttp also had a widescreen patch so it was worth to ask.
Honestly I'v never even played any Zelda games, but since I love Metroid hacks this could a be a good challenge.

Once again, Metaquarius uses a contest to offer us some very experimental design that you wouldn't see in a full scale hack or indie dungeon scroller on Steam.

This hack has two of the best twists you will ever see in one of these. No, I will not spoil them, and yes you should absolutely enter this hack without spoilers.

Meta promised pure liquid crushment, and once again he delivers. 11/10

This hack was a good time. I laughed at the gelato naming convention and then laughed harder finding piles of it strewn about the station, and mamma-mia-ing all the items was funny too. For a gag hack it played seriously though. I think the best part about this was how much play each item got, especially the new toy which was very cool. I'm a "hold run at all times" kinda player and I skipped a lot of tooltips inadvertently, but it was clear what it did just playing around with it, and you made good use of it as a movement tool and puzzle key.

It's also great how open and breakable the station felt, you didn't try to overcorrect wave gates or underwater wall jumping or other tech, the hell runs were quite manageable, etc. It was clear at obstacles that you wanted us to have something for them but you let us shoot ourselves in the foot anyway.

When the hack started I thought the number of false-wall secrets would be annoying but somehow I came to expect them, and jumping into walls and ceilings just felt like bomb-checking them anyway. The aesthetics of the station were nice, though cherry side is a little on the red-crateria side of things. Tiling was generally cool, even if I did have some trouble telling what was destroyed and what was background in the escape.

Really great hack, but I am an Italian so -1 orb.

A hack that despite it's age manages to get a lot right but has unnecessary issues holding it back from being a slam dunk. Unfortunately at times progression can be difficult to find but not impossible. Wrecked ship was difficult to find. Ice was tricky but can be skipped. Grapple is hidden far too much and although i was convinced something was there, and the map also hinted at it, i wasn't able to find it until after acquiring xray, again out of sequence. Thankfully it's not necessary to progress if you can short charge. Maridia is interesting but again bogged down by some difficulty in finding progression with cryptic blocks needing to be bombed. I had to resort to an ice clip to get past one section and I still have no idea how else it's supposed to be done. Lower Norfair again presents difficulty in finding the correct route with a seemingly random shot block (vanilla knowledge does help) providing a cryptic roadblock to progress. These were the only frustrations of an otherwise fun and enjoyable hack. It's too bad that there always seems to be one of these roadblocks around the corner even if they can't be described as pervasive.

It's could easily be a weak 5 for me but progression is too often behind some obtuse solution/location that it's too frustrating not to be docked. I also think the scope and generally well done layout deserves more than the 3 it's sitting at. I'd rather the odd obtuse decision over boring or unfair and this hack is thankfully neither of those things. It's far from perfect but as a product of it's time i think those errors are easily overlooked. Although nowhere close to a top hack but it's also still clearly IMO a quality one. For being nearly 20 years old that's impressive. I really enjoyed it and although I found progression frustrating at times everything else was solid and I think it's worth a playthrough for it's well deserved "legacy". I'd say for better or worse it has a certain old school charm that classic NES games often have. Thanks for the great hack and for providing an inspiration for many that came after.

This hack has the problem that the map does not save correctly, then when you restart from a save station, the map is incomplete and some parts were deleted.
To fix this issue, you can use the Scyzer's Save / Load patch.
If this is the case, please use the IPS widescreen patch, because the BPS widescreen patch will not be compatible.
Thanks P.JBoy, somerando(caauyjdp) and Tundain.

A little late, sorry.
Simply right click on the image and open it in a new tab.
I think there are like 4 images of Escape 2, just look at the blue HUD.
The author of this hack really likes the color blue :)

Hmm, it seems I misunderstood your question.
But the first image up from the bottom left is Ancient Chozo, one of the most graphically impressive hacks on Metconst.

Review by Kremit44 on August 11, 2021

I hummed between a 3 and a 4 but settled on a 3. I think this hack has done a good job rearranging the vanilla game and modifying most rooms beyond recognition so despite not being overly ambitious it is a new experience. Beyond the lack of ambition I think it has a couple gameplay issues holding it back and thus the 3. The biggest is progress is often a pain to find and a lot of suitless trips through Maridia and Norfair will likely be had trying to find it. Hell runs are a big part of this hack. It's very open in terms of allowing you to explore but the map lacks connection points between many areas and thus you'll find yourself travelling from one side of Crateria to the next too often after a fruitless search in one of the games areas. Despite it's openness leaving the player with hope for places to keep looking often actual progress is too well hidden leading to tedious searches compounding the obvious issues of playing suitless in heat and water. In saying that it was mostly a fun challenge and it did the suitless stuff rather well apart from the aimlessness of it all. Because of the large expectation of suitless travel and the difficulty finding the next path I'd recommend this to experts only but it certainly has it's merits. Thanks to the author for a solid hack.
