[SM] Title Screen editing problem

I hope someone can help me out with this problem:

I wanted to remove the graphics of the dead bodies on the main title screen for a small hack I'm working on.
I was able to find the Mode 7 editor in SMILE RF and I tried copying some empty tiles in their place, but when I run the ROM, I get a bunch of visual garbage all over where I tried erasing the graphics for the bodies. (Picture 1 in the ZIP file)

EDIT: I've realized that it's not "visual garbage" or "artifacts" but an actual tile used in the title screen. I still can't get rid of them, however.

I keep loading the Mode 7 editor in SMILE and the graphical errors are still there. I keep copying and pasting what appear to be empty space tiles to clean it up, (Picture 2) but no matter what I do, there doesn't seem to be a way to save the changes I make.

I've checked the ROM file itself to make sure it isn't set to Read-Only (it isn't) so I'm not sure why I can't save the changes I make in the Mode 7 editor.

Any help/pointers would be appreciated.

I've just done a quick test, and everything seemed to save fine straight away. I did exactly what it sounds like you're doing, and didn't have a problem. I just right-clicked an empty tile, pasted it over the bodies, did some other edits for obviousness, tested it in the emulator, and it works fine.

Have you tried moving the ROM, and testing it away from all of the other files? Have you done anything with repointing graphics at all, or are they still in their default locations?

EpicAndroid

I've added a few mods I got from the Resources section that have changed the HUD and Morph Ball graphics.

I honestly don't know anything about manually repointing graphics; I've just been applying ASM, IPS and Hex edits so far. (I think we found the problem?)

I always have the ASM & IPS files organized in separate folders from the ROM, so the ROM is in a folder by itself when I work on it.

I'm using the most current version of SMILE RF, if that makes a difference.

Also: does the Mode 7 editor save changes to the title screen on its own, or do you need to do something?

Thank you for your response so far!

It sounds like you may need to go through a process of elimination. Start with testing SMILE RF, which is unlikely to be causing it - take a completely fresh ROM with no patches, open the title, make an edit, and test. If it works as intended in SMILE RF, and saves and plays OK, then you'll know that it's one or more of the patches you've applied causing it.

Welp....it's gotta be one of the things I've patched because I tried what you said and sure enough, it worked without any issues.

I guess I'll grab an early backup and see what I can do from there.

Thank you very much for your help! Cheers!
