Replacing items in Equip Screen

I'd like to replace items in the equip screen. I know where the code that controls the cursor is, but i am unsure about how i would make different item slots enable/ diable other items. I assume its a very simple check for the equipped items ram bit, but I'm not sure where or how i would go about editing this.
