Steel Sparkle

This sounds interesting. I should give it a shot!

LexyChan

I kinda like the hack (continues speed is screwing me over but that's mostly me I think, don't bother)

but by the way I kinda found out this:
(tagged as a spoiler since I'm not sure how far that can be considered spoiling things)
Uhm...I have a question, is this gate supposed to opened from this side without Wave Beam?
I can open it with spazer+ice when I hold down run and jump from that spot towards the gate.

When I hit this spot I just shoot and the gate opens.

Just like that.
MetroidNerd#9001

I may or may not fix that. One the one hand, it's a nifty sequence break, on the other hand, the gate in general doesn't look that great graphically, and fixing it would make the glitch not work, I'll play around with it at some point to test and see which I prefer. Thanks for pointing that out.

Moehr

Posting to offer test assistance.

This version took a bit to make, but it has some major changes including:

A completely reworked map thanks to TLP and DC's map patch
More rooms having roomstates to permanently clear away obstacles
More changes to level data of rooms to look more interesting and to better show intended path of progression

After a few more versions, with some more playtesting, the hack will be released. Thank you everyone who has helped out so far.

UDtheAesir

Oh man, perfect timing, thanks!

andlabs

I like what you did with the Zebes asleep states; I'm surprised no one has done that before... (Currently up to right after Grappling Beam. More comments later?)

UDtheAesir

Wow, I managed to get myself into quite a hot pickle, indeed! Somehow did a hell run all the way down to Crocomire, beat him, and now looks like I can't get back up without dying. That's a great sequence break of sorts with that gate facing the wrong way, but a death sentence coming up. Will have to reset and figure out how to get the Varia Suit before Norfair.

MetroidNerd#9001

Is the Energy Tank in Crocomire's room not enough to get out? I'm going to assume that you haven't been to the Wrecked Ship yet, but my question is, how did you get to Norfair without the Grapple Beam? I think that the wall jump out of the water right before the entrance to Maridia should be impossible without Hi-Jump, unless it isn't. I don't know. I'm still not sure if I should take out the ability to break through that gate.

UDtheAesir

No, I haven't touched Wrecked Ship. I had X-Ray Scope, Power Bombs, Supers, Missiles, and Bombs. I was actually looking for ways to get to Kraid, Varia Suit and Grapple Beam, but no luck so far. Maybe I forgot something simple, I'll figure out something.

UDtheAesir

Yep, did forget something simple. All good now, back on track! Good hack so far.

In bsnes v080 (and presumably other versions), leaving this room:

results in this corrupt room:

I've seen this enough times now that I wonder if there's a common symptom and a name for it.

MetroidNerd#9001

I have not had that happen to me on SNES 9x, what I have been testing everything in. It may have something to do with each of the roomstates; I'll take another look at it.

DonnyDonovan

That happened to me using ZSNES as well.   I think 1.53.

MetroidNerd#9001

I do not understand why that is happening. On SNES 9x it works perfectly fine. I don't know what differences between emulators would cause something like this, though it is clearly something. It is possible (Though not likely) that other emulators are not reading the event PLM properly, though if that were the case, every other room that uses them would have the same problem, and this is the only room I have heard of problems with. Each of the room's three states works fine when entering from that door, and I wouldn't think it's loading scrolls wrong. Do y'all think you could try to look into what is causing it, and what exactly happens? I'm stumped.

Metaquarius

CE6136 is not a valid level data pointer.

MetroidNerd#9001

Thanks Meta. I don't know why SMILE didn't break when I put it in wrong in the first place, it usually does when I mess up conversions from PC to LoROM when putting in a new level data pointer. The roomstate should work now, the pointer has been fixed to CEE136. This will be a part of the next version I release, possibly in the next few days to a week.

LexyChan

I was about to post the same issue but I'm glad this has been noted already!

boostin

looking pretty cool for your first hack. keep up the good work

MetroidNerd#9001

Made some more level edits to make some rooms less bland. A "Custom Graphic" has also been added. The Roomstate error has also been fixed. This is a bit more of a minor update, but still an update nonetheless. Next version I will try to get item completion percentage normal and at 100%.

DonnyDonovan

Nice to see the polish you're applying to this.   It will end up one of the better half-hacks.

andlabs

What is the item completion of the hack as you distributed it (with the broken room I pointed out above)? 99%?

MetroidNerd#9001

I'm pretty sure it's over 100%, but the only values that need to be edited are missiles and Power Bombs. I may end up having 250 missiles and 25 power bombs with 5% worth of reserve tanks.

MetroidNerd#9001

One year ago today I made the first backup of my hack on my computer. I apparently downloaded SMILE ten days earlier, but I'll consider the 23rd the start date of my hack. Anyway, to commemorate this occasion, I decided to release another version. This will likely be the second to last Beta before the true release of the hack. This version doesn't have too many changes compared to the last on except for the addition of actual custom graphics and a couple of tiling error fixes.
I haven't really been working on it that much since school started last week, so I haven't really had time. Also, feedback from beta testing has greatly slowed, so I haven't gotten motivation from that to do much, and I've started running out of things to try to fix that I've found. I still have to fix the item percentage, and I still have a couple of roomstate additions I want to make, but they will be before version 0.99, before the full release. Hopefully some time this weekend or soon I'll find the time to work on the hack more, and play through it a couple of times. I'll also do some work as soon as I find time if anyone reports anything from their playthroughs of the hack. I hope to put out a polished hack in the end, and hopefully people will like it.
